Absolutely LOVE Hogan's Heroes and watch it every single night!! I've seen this episode so many times however I did not recognize Harvey Keitel!! Cool discovery!! German Harvey!
What a surprise treat to find out that Harvey Keitel's first acting gig was as "German Harvey." He is truly one of the greats of all time. His role in Pulp Fiction (as The Wolf) was short, but very memorable. I especially loved the running gag about the gourmet coffee. Classic comedic scene. Thanks for what you do. It is always a learning experience for me.
German Harvey was a surprise to me. Brought back some memories of actual cameos: Leonard Nimoy showing up at the end of a Carol Burnett sketch, in makeup and wardrobe as Spock; William Shatner in a Mork and Mindy scene, and one of my favorites, Bruce Lee sticking his head out the window of a building being scaled up the side by Adam West and Burt Ward... yes, a Batman TOS episode and all three were in costume. Un-fortunately for us old guys, jogging your memory doesn't count as exercise.

As you mentioned, this is easily one of the best episodes of season 1 and in my view, it's also in my top 5 episodes of the entire series. It's strange to me that I didn't notice him, though he doesn't speak in the roll. I did notice Charles Napier make a very brief appearance in another episode but he said something and I recognized the voice lol. Another great catch Rick! John Banner himself made a quick unspoken cameo on an episode of "The Andy Griffith Show." And of course Larry Hovis, William Christopher, Parley Baer, Ruta Lee, and Hal Smith were showcased on AGS and HH. The strangest TV cameo perhaps ever was when Werner Klemperer popped up on a "Batman" episode on a different Network (ABC), in a different Decade (The Sixties), and Batman greeted him with "Hey, Colonel Klink!"🤔😂🤣😂📺B.W.

As to this episode, it remains my favorite. John Banner nailed it in so many way. After the big reveal in the barracks, I always find myself watching for when he turns to leave and walks into the door frame. Not sure if that's how the scene was directed or it just happened and he went with it. Either way, it was priceless!

German Harvey didn't have much air time, but he starred in National Treasure as "Harvey FBI' (wonder if he would rather be German or FBI?)

I didn't even recognize Harvey, I've watched this episode hundreds of times and never noticed. I still think of Harvey in Pulp Fiction. But Harvey playing a German soldier is the weirdest because like you said if you blink you will miss him. But I do have to say a lot of the old TV shows have big name stars from back in the days, not so much now a days, it's almost like it's beneath them to do tv shows. I guess it really doesn't matter too much now because a lot of people don't watch TV anymore.
I seen James Caan talking about when he was in an episode of get Smart' under a different name" saying he thought it would hold him back I seen the episode countless times I never knew it was him

Many of those stars weren't stars when they appeared in some television shows. For example William Shatner in the Twilight Zone episode, " Nightmare at 20,000 Feet", or for that matter Harvey Keitel in Hogan's Heros.
I would have never known this, watched Hogan's Heroes many times. Harvey Kitel was also in Wise Guys with Danny Devito.

Hogan's Heroes was one of my favorite shows to watch when I was younger. Very surprised to learn that German Harvey was in an episode.
Was also surprised to learn that the man who played Col. Klink is the son of contuctor/composer Otto Klemperer.
I did"not see" him in a role like this. Although his later atonement for this debut reflects in his acting presence on screen.

Oh my gosh! I have watched a complete HH disc every night at bedtime for last 12 years and never recognized him. One day I'll hear those drums and fall asleep wherever I am.😁

Hogan's Heroes is my all-time favorite series. Watched every Saturday night at 7:00 when it aired. Then in syndication on channel 26 in New Orleans. They had a double feature each weekday. I believe from 5:30 to 6:30. Me and my dad would watch daily. German Harvey.

sometimes people forget that big stars start out as unknowns and this is a prime example of it, you can't get any bigger than Harvey Keitel - I loved Harvey Keitel in all his movie roles like Pulp Fiction, Taxi Driver and Bad Lieutenant, but I think my favorite Harvey Keitel role is on TV in the American version of "Life on Mars"

Many to become famous actors started out in this manner. There were a few in the 1960's TV show Combat. Ted Knight played a German soldier in at least three, Robert Duvall in at least two. James Caan played in one as a German sergeant. Through the whole show he spoke only German. As the show had a long run, I'm shure there were many others that became well known stars. But those three come to mind.

That was so cool! Harvey K in Hogan’s Heroes! Bet he has some stories to tell about that show! Quick question. Is it difficult to use video clips of the shows you cover when describing scenes or characters? To see and hear these clips would be great, but not sure how difficult it is to use them in your work, especially with copyrights and all. Just curious.

It is interesting how many actors got their start on Hogan's Heroes. However, I never caught German Harvey... you win the day on that one. It is also interesting to see how many classic actors took time to be on this show when they never did teleivision otherwise.

I would have commented regardless of the DVD prize, because Hogan's Heros was one of my TOP tv shows to watch when I was a kid!...and I still love Hogan's Heros...and YES, I do indeed remember this episode when Schultz has to pretend to be Klink -it is Hilarious!!! ...and I haven't seen that episode in at least 15 years! Hogan's Heroes is SUCH a GREAT show! Thank you for all your insight into these great shows! That is also very cool that Harvey Keitel is in this episode and it is his first acting gig -that's extra fun and interesting! 👍

Keitel started filming Scorsese's first film "Who's That Knocking at My Door" in 1965 but the film wasn't released until 1967.

Frawley was in a LOT of shows and movies!! The Outer Limits, Columbo, The Monkees, Hogan's Heroes, etc.. His dad was Bill Frawley from,, "I Love Lucy".
Rick, I enjoyed your story about Harvey. It's very interesting how many movies German Harvey appeared in. Another actor I was surprised to see in a cameo was William Christopher who also was a German soldier or officer. He was very unlike his MASH character.
William Christopher had a very unique TV run then. Cameo on "Hogan's Heroes." Cast as Lester Hummel on "Gomer Pyle, USMC." Played "The New Doctor" on a colorized "Andy Griffith Show" episode. And of course was Father John Mulcahy through practically the entire time of "MASH." Castmate of both AGS and The 4077 under the same Producer in Gene Reynolds!🤔😂📺B.W.

He's a great actor that got kind of lost in the background.
It was always funny to me whenever Schulz was made up to be or acted more like a more authoritative figure than he really was! Another example was when they were talking about their "post war" plans and he speaks about the Schotzie Toy Company and when Klink praises it and asks Schultz about it he remarks "...why not?! I own it..!" Haha!
