It doesn’t lack lyrical depth. The lyrics are juxtaposed. It’s about the narrator asking if he’s being tough or soft. He mentions stuff that makes him feel tough and then things that make him feel soft and emotional.
We never loved KOL for the musical complexity. We loved them for Caleb's wailing vocals, funky bass lines, and simple songs about girls. I grew up around music nerds and this was always the gripe theyd have about KOL, "they're music is simple". If its so simple, where's everyone's smash hits and billboard topping albums?
Why so cynical? So what if a song is minimal and lacks lyrical depth. A song doesn’t have to be a poetic masterpiece to be good or entertaining. It’s obviously more about vibe, a simple pop song, not a 14 verse Dylan folk classic.
Yeah, I respect this guy and gave him a like, but he seemed to miss the whole point of this being a radio single. The best marketing strategy KOL could’ve used lyrically for a single in today’s music landscape. There’s few words said, but the ones that are said are barbaric so it makes you want to know what he’s going to come out with next on first listen. It has a “Wet Leg” esque formula lyrically and it’s certainly better than them releasing another Pop Rock sleeper as the lead single. It’s better to leave them scratching their heads than it is having them yawn
I agree that not every song has to be a masterpiece, however, Kings of Leon used to be great at making “radio” songs that were simple but still unique. I feel like when I hear a Kings of Leon song these days, I already know what it’s going to sound like before I hear it. I get music is subjective and a lot of people will love this track but for me, there’s something missing - even for a “radio” song. Matthew is a great guitarist but I miss actually hearing him shine. His guitar in this song sounds mundane and unenthusiastic. I dunno if it’s the effects he’s using or the riff itself. He was always good at simplicity in other songs, as well as the more complicated guitar solo, but I think in this song the simplicity coupled with those effects just make it sound unappealing. They were always good at blending simplicity with uniqueness - be it with their quirky timing (My Party, Charmer, Knocked up, Arizona etc.), Caleb’s southern twang and lyric style (Joe’s Head, Slow Night, so Long; Spiral Staircase, Taper Jean Girl etc.) or even Jared’s catchy bass lines and Nathan’s drumming. Nowadays, it feels like the rest of the band has dialled it down to let Caleb’s voice take centre stage but the problem is that he’s lost his unique lyrical style, pronunciations and most of his Southern twang - so there’s nothing really carrying the songs and they just feel kinda half-assed with no urge to be creative or take risks. I think they have found a “formula” they think works and try to make every song based on it. In my opinion, they should ditch the “formula” and everyone should start taking more risks, they’re only limiting their creativity.
@@letstalksong Sometimes you can understand the technical or theoretical side of music so thoroughly that you lose the ability to just accept a song as it’s presented to you without picking it apart piece by piece. I’ve been there, it sucks. Took me years to break out of it.
@@TheDob766Oftentimes you just can't pin down why you really dig a tune and picking it apart/reverse engineering it just misses the point somewhat. There are 'rules' to music composition but plenty of them have a bit o give in 'em. Besides, I think a lot of KOL song are growers anyway.
@damianreid2452 I still maintain there is a theoretic reason for why we enjoy certain things. In the case of this chorus it is certainly a combination of the catchy and creative lyrics, the simple but passionately transmitted melody and the fact that the verses are really irritating 😜
Nice video. But I think you missed the point of what the album is about. "Can we please have fun", for what i've seen them talk about in a interview, is intentional on trying to not be restricted by rules or deep meaning. "Are you a Mustang or a Kitty" he created simply because he was weating a mustang shirt and her Daughter was watching kitty videos for example
@@letstalksong You are welcome. I don't think it would be possible to know that the first time you hear it. For me it was different because I follow them and understand the context of the band at the moment. The interview then confirmed I will check out your other videos. All the best!!
This is interesting. For me, exactly what you disliked, I like. I am obsessed with the mood it puts me in. This is fun, nasty and rock! ❤️ welcome back, KOL!
I did not like this song the first time I heard it. I admit that. Since then, I have heard interviews about the title of the album. They wanted to have fun for gods sake. So, it makes total sense that this song was the first one released. Also, that bass line is awesome.
I’m pretty sure this song is supposed be lacking in complexity. Closest thing we have now to Bad Company - rock music isn’t complex when it’s at its best.
Ok try breaking down “the teaches of peaches” just enough structure to barely cover Victorias secret. Like Peaches outfits. Huh? What? Right? Uh Probably a NSFW edition.
If listen to literally any of their stuff , this is right on par with peak KOL, IMO . It may be a little bias speaking, but this song is amazing and this video is kinda annoying .
You take this very seriously. Use your eyes. When watching the music video, you should know that it is something non-obvious, littlebit crazy. Why so serious?
Not one for constructive criticism, critical thought or objectivity? Extensive ‘training’ possibly didn’t cover that or anything other than pitch or melody it appears - there are far more components to music and songwriting. Are you familiar with the band Kraftwerk or the composer John Cage?
Thank you for your comment. I'm all about constructive criticism, though this is not necessarily possible with a first reaction... I'm planning on shooting a more in-depth video on the song, where I go into the reasons why it's still a great song :) I know Kraftwerk and John Cage, I just do not consider them pop music. They simply play another game and it would be unfair to judge them by the pop "rules". In my opinion, songwriting is made up of three elements: chords, melody, words. Everything else is arrangement and production, a totally different field in my opinion. Welcome to the channel and thanks again for the constructive comment.
@@letstalksong Songwriting extents far beyond the ‘pop’ genre though. If you don’t consider Kraftwerk ‘popular culture’ I implore you to consider their impact and influence on contemporary music. As mentioned, I honestly feel this lacked analysis - more dissection and individual opinion content

@deebrooks9406 I’m sorry, I still don’t understand: lacking respect for who/what? You? Caleb Followill? KoL? Their music in general? This song? I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings, I didn’t mean to.
Perhaps your lack of understanding needs to be addressed. You can analyse as much as you like but you seem to be missing out on the essence of kings of leon and caleb. I am a fan. I find their music exciting. I found your comments underwhelming.
It is art, and most of it is about creativity and inspiration. When it comes to turning creativity and inspiration into a generally accepted form, there are certain skills that every songwriter needs though. The union of heart and mind is what makes great art.
