Advice from a twin: Hi Colleen, I am a boy girl twin my self and some preferences that I have is for all of their birthdays try to have each of them their own cake. My mom done this since we were born and it was very exciting to choose our own theme for each of our cakes. Even through we share a birthday it made both of us feel like it was our own day.
can we just take a moment to appreciate how excited Flynn gets over EVERY gift he gets? i fuckin’ love it. buddy’s got like 15 different kinds of the same trucks and still screams every time he opens a new one.
I think my favourite thing is Colleen puts toys away in the garage and will randomly give them to Flynn and he thinks they are a new gift and gets so excited 😭😂

In my opinion, Flynn looks exactly like Eric. Wesley is a perfect mix of Stocklin and Ballenger. Then little miss Maisy is your twin. I can’t wait to see what they look like when they get a little older. All three of them are absolutely perfect 🥰

Advice from a person who is in a relationship with a man who has a twin sister: My partner and his twin sister are very different. However, when they were younger, his parents always celebrated their bdays together. Once the twins got to be around 5th grade they hated that because they were so different. Here’s how their parents dealt with that. Their birthday was on sept 13th, so, on the 11th, they would celebrate one twin and give them a special day (and they were allowed to have their specific friends over). Then, on the 12th, they would give the other twin their special day (with their specific friends if they wanted.) Than on the 13th (their actual bday), they would have a joint celebration with just family. This helped them feel like individuals, and do things they specifically wanted, but, also allowed them to celebrate being a twin, and together. They didn’t grow up with a lot of money, so typically they would each get one small gift, and then one joint large gift. Just thought I’d share. Having twins who aren’t the same gender is always a challenge (from what I hear) but, it’s so special and amazing. You’re doing a great job, and you are such an amazing mama! ❤️ **Wesley and Masie are so adorable (so is Flynn) 🥰
i have a twin sister and i couldn't agree with this enough i absolutely hated sharing my birthday celebrations but when me and my sister where about 7 my mum and dad also decided to give us our own birthdays so we could express our individuality and personalities as we had completely different interests
I have a twin brother and I love the idea of treating twins as individuals and celebrating birthdays on different days. When we were little we had joint parties and as we got older they were separated like he gets the morning and I get afternoon. For the genre thing, I like that my brother is a different gender just because we aren't categorized together as much. Same-gender twins are more likely to be considered as a "2-in-1" combo than twins of different genders (even though he and I are still treated as 1 joint person at times). I do get why different-sex twins can be hard.
Flynn being so happy and chilled having Wes and Maisy at home is a reflection of how great your parenting is! He is completely secure in the fact that his parents love him so much and it shows😁
A big piece of advice that I would give from having a twin sister is really pushing that they are two separate babies. One of my biggest issues growing up was being referred to as "the twins". I felt like no one saw me as me and only knew us as twins and not people. Also bonding separately! Having those moment where it was just my parents and I and doing this together helped a lot.
Tortilla Talk Question: Hearing you say "my brain is already trying to erase the time in the NICU" REALLY hit home. My daughter was a 26 weeker and was in the NICU for 6 months. I was 19 at the time and a single mom. She'll be 16 in a few weeks and while I remember some things from the NICU, it wasn't until you were vlogging your NICU journey that all of the memories from that period of my life came up. The sounds of the alarms, the feeling of the hospital swaddle blankets, the smell of the NICU all came rushing back along with all the feelings you were feeling. I remembered it so clearly and realized I had been holding onto all that grief all of the years because I had nowhere to release and no one to relate to because I was so young and I had an extremely minimal support system. Do you think in the future you'll watch vlogs back from your twins' time in the NICU to remind yourself of your strength and endurance or do you think you'll never want to bring yourself back to that time mentally and emotionally?

As a twin myself, I have a suggestion for you. On their birthday, get them each their own cake! My sister and I always shared one until we were 13 or 14 and started requesting two small cakes instead of one big cake.
My cousins always have had just one cake but it's always devided in half so both siblings get to choose decor and filling for their side. That works since both of them only like vanilla cake. One decore pair I remember was Mickey Mouse clubhouse and Pacman. My cousins are not twins but their birthdays are just one day apart so it's just more convenient to celebrate them together. If they want they can have their own parties for their friends.
Yes this! Also, since the twins came home on separate days, she could celebrate each of their coming home days with them individually - and actual birthdays can be together. They will share so much and it's super hard to get time alone/give them individualized attention it would be nice for each to have their own "day." I plan to do this with my twins as they get older - even though they came home one day apart.
In regards to the feeding situation you talked about at the start, remember that you don't HAVE to do anything. If pumping milk to bottle feed them is working for you, that's great. If you get them able to breastfeed and it works for you, that's great too. The main thing is that your babies are happy and fed, and however you get that to happen is perfect. You're amazing Colleen, sending you and your family lots of love
Yes! This. All day, every day! *Fed is best.* Also, a happy mom has an easier time taking care of the little smooshie faced little cuties, so whatever works for you is going to be the best for your babes in the long run. So, if you are a formula feeder or a breast feeder-- *YOU ARE DOING GREAT, MOM!* Years ago, I had a hard time with beginning breastfeeding (lactation consultants? YOU ROCK!) and made myself a nervous wreck to the point of exhaustion because I was (in hindsight needlessly, imo) so freaked out at the idea that I would have somehow failed my baby by not breastfeeding. Our lactation consultants suggested that if we decided to use formula, it might be easier for the baby (and me!) if the first bottle was fed by someone other than myself. My mom came over to help and I remember weeping like a faucet at the idea (gasp! Insert needless clutching of imaginary pearls here!) of my baby consuming food that was fine and healthy and nutritious but that didn't come from my body. Post partem hormones do be wreaking havoc on a person, you get me? In the end, we did overcome our hurdles and a successful breastfeeding journey continued for a long time. But you know what? Things would have been _fine_ either way. Again, fed is best.🤗 P.S. Yes, I am fully and totally aware of the benefits of breast milk. I am also fully and totally aware that the overall mental health of the baby's family has benefits too, and if formula feeds help that situation be optimal, then all is good. Love to all you Mamas, each and every one of you, no matter how you choose to feed your babies.💖
Agree, I had a hard time accepting this because I was a pumping momma, my son just preferred the bottle, but wanted to nurse so bad. I felt like I failed in a way which would cause me so much stress. Eventually, I just had to let go and let the baby be the boss.

One of my granddaughters was a NICU baby and her older sister was allowed to be loud because the baby was used to the noise of the NICU. She’s 3 now and can still sleep through anything.
@@annajosullivan Yeah. We try to be quiet around sleeping kids and sometimes i get surprised by what kids can sleep through. Loud sneeze or someone dropping something. Seconds of panic. Just to realize that baby totally ignored it 😆
You’d be surprised how well some babies sleep when they have older siblings! I work with infants and toddlers and most of them can sleep through anything, babies could be screaming bloody murder and they’re fast asleep 🤣
Tortilla talk comment: this goes out to all the people out there who have had to spend any time in a hospital and especially to you Colleen. As someone who lived in the hospital for three months fighting a chronic illness, I know that just being there can make you feel depressed and helpless, the experience can be like a scar. The feelings you had when you were there can last a long time even after it’s over but eventually you will feel yourself again. You are so strong Colleen, you got this!
Hey Colleen, as a premie twin myself (that was in the NICU for 2 weeks) I also love having those separate pictures to look back on. But my advice for you is to not always dress the Wes and Maisy alike, obviously when they are babies and even toddlers then it's fine but my mom let my twin and I have our own style and we only ever dress alike when we want to, this not only helped us grow into a style of our own, but also helps people tell us apart. And now we have very different styles! I'm NOT saying that you shouldn't live out your Mary-Kate and Ashley dreams with the twins dressing alike, bit I've always appreciated the fact that my parents never forced us to dress alike once we were older like (5ish and up). (I'm not trying to tell you how to parent because you are an AMAZING mom, and I see that they aren't always dressed alike) Its just a tip. Also I love your vlogs and videos and what you stand for, Love you Colleen (I hope you see this)
for tortilla talk: i am a fraternal twin and i totally get the "your twin is your built in bff!!" and stuff like that but PLEASE don't force anything or always make them do stuff together. from my experience being a twin, it is sometimes hard to break out of the mould and be individualistic. of course if they ask for matching outfits and to do stuff together then don't discourage them, but please don't force the narrative that all twins must get along all the time simply because they're twins. thanks for reading xx
I grew up with a couple pairs of twins and this is very good advice. It's one thing to match them up as newborn's/toddlers, but when they get older I think you can start to tell if they're into it or not. One of the pairs of twins I grew up with were put in different classes in elementary because they didn't want to be associated as twins (they wanted to be individuals and viewed that way) while another set of twins (I was closer to them in middle/high school) took as many classes together as they could and very legitimately were each other's BFF. Like, neither of them had a "best friend", that person was each other. Im sure as they get older Colleen and Eric will adjust/adapt as the twins are able to form their bond and make it known what their relationship with each other is like.
Flynn is the cutest and sweetest thing I have ever seen. I am bawling right now with tears of joy. You have such an adorable family and Flynn is going to protect them so much!! Congratulations once again!!!
As a mommy with a career, I felt the same way. I absolutely loved and still love being a mommy however, I love my career as well. I’m a nurse practitioner and took 6 months off to care for my babies but eventually knew I wanted to return to work. Prior to the babies, my job is what identified me and I missed it. Some people are born to be full time mommy’s and I give them so much credit but me returning to work just 3 days a week was a blessing and definitely made me a better mommy. As my therapist said, “just because you became a mommy, doesn’t mean you still can’t be you”.

A few helpful things I’ve heard about getting babies to wean off bottle back to breast is to give them like half the bottle so they aren’t starving and frantic then try switching to breast. Also to just like take a day where you just dedicate most of your time to having loads of skin to skin and free boob access time so they can snack on it, again this avoids the frantic hunger that has no patience for boobs - it can be really hard getting them to switch back over and pumping to feed is so time consuming and taxing there’s not shame in adding formula in when needed ❤️❤️

As a single mom of 4 grown kids. (No twins lol) I did something that my girls have all loved as they turned 18. I started an email for each of them and have been sending the letters, photos etc each month until 18. They all still have those emails and LOVE looking back at their childhood that way. Good luck and you do have the strength even if it doesn't feel like it now

Advice from a person who is in a relationship with a man who has a twin sister:
My partner and his twin sister are very different. However, when they were younger, his parents always celebrated their bdays together. Once the twins got to be around 5th grade they hated that because they were so different. Here’s how their parents dealt with that. Their birthday was on sept 13th, so, on the 11th, they would celebrate one twin and give them a special day (and they were allowed to have their specific friends over). Then, on the 12th, they would give the other twin their special day (with their specific friends if they wanted.) Than on the 13th (their actual bday), they would have a joint celebration with just family. This helped them feel like individuals, and do things they specifically wanted, but, also allowed them to celebrate being a twin, and together. They didn’t grow up with a lot of money, so typically they would each get one small gift, and then one joint large gift. Just thought I’d share.
Having twins who aren’t the same gender is always a challenge (from what I hear) but, it’s so special and amazing. You’re doing a great job, and you are such an amazing mama! ❤️ **Wesley and Masie are so adorable (so is Flynn) 🥰

i have a twin sister and i couldn't agree with this enough i absolutely hated sharing my birthday celebrations but when me and my sister where about 7 my mum and dad also decided to give us our own birthdays so we could express our individuality and personalities as we had completely different interests
I have a twin brother and I love the idea of treating twins as individuals and celebrating birthdays on different days. When we were little we had joint parties and as we got older they were separated like he gets the morning and I get afternoon.
For the genre thing, I like that my brother is a different gender just because we aren't categorized together as much. Same-gender twins are more likely to be considered as a "2-in-1" combo than twins of different genders (even though he and I are still treated as 1 joint person at times). I do get why different-sex twins can be hard.
Flynn being so happy and chilled having Wes and Maisy at home is a reflection of how great your parenting is! He is completely secure in the fact that his parents love him so much and it shows😁
That’s so true. Some people put all the blame on the kids when they feel jealous but sometimes the parents stop paying attention to the oldest.

I love how Flynn is still trying to distinguish between the twins and says “those guys” and “this one and that one” it’s so cute!!!
A big piece of advice that I would give from having a twin sister is really pushing that they are two separate babies. One of my biggest issues growing up was being referred to as "the twins". I felt like no one saw me as me and only knew us as twins and not people. Also bonding separately! Having those moment where it was just my parents and I and doing this together helped a lot.

Tortilla Talk Question: Hearing you say "my brain is already trying to erase the time in the NICU" REALLY hit home. My daughter was a 26 weeker and was in the NICU for 6 months. I was 19 at the time and a single mom. She'll be 16 in a few weeks and while I remember some things from the NICU, it wasn't until you were vlogging your NICU journey that all of the memories from that period of my life came up. The sounds of the alarms, the feeling of the hospital swaddle blankets, the smell of the NICU all came rushing back along with all the feelings you were feeling. I remembered it so clearly and realized I had been holding onto all that grief all of the years because I had nowhere to release and no one to relate to because I was so young and I had an extremely minimal support system. Do you think in the future you'll watch vlogs back from your twins' time in the NICU to remind yourself of your strength and endurance or do you think you'll never want to bring yourself back to that time mentally and emotionally?

As a twin myself, I have a suggestion for you. On their birthday, get them each their own cake! My sister and I always shared one until we were 13 or 14 and started requesting two small cakes instead of one big cake.

My cousins always have had just one cake but it's always devided in half so both siblings get to choose decor and filling for their side. That works since both of them only like vanilla cake. One decore pair I remember was Mickey Mouse clubhouse and Pacman. My cousins are not twins but their birthdays are just one day apart so it's just more convenient to celebrate them together. If they want they can have their own parties for their friends.
Yes this! Also, since the twins came home on separate days, she could celebrate each of their coming home days with them individually - and actual birthdays can be together. They will share so much and it's super hard to get time alone/give them individualized attention it would be nice for each to have their own "day." I plan to do this with my twins as they get older - even though they came home one day apart.
I’m a twin as well and we did this! Always made it more special! We’d have an ice cream cake and a regular cake and it was such a special memory!!

In regards to the feeding situation you talked about at the start, remember that you don't HAVE to do anything. If pumping milk to bottle feed them is working for you, that's great. If you get them able to breastfeed and it works for you, that's great too. The main thing is that your babies are happy and fed, and however you get that to happen is perfect. You're amazing Colleen, sending you and your family lots of love

All day, every day! *Fed is best.* Also, a happy mom has an easier time taking care of the little smooshie faced little cuties, so whatever works for you is going to be the best for your babes in the long run. So, if you are a formula feeder or a breast feeder-- *YOU ARE DOING GREAT, MOM!*
Years ago, I had a hard time with beginning breastfeeding (lactation consultants? YOU ROCK!) and made myself a nervous wreck to the point of exhaustion because I was (in hindsight needlessly, imo) so freaked out at the idea that I would have somehow failed my baby by not breastfeeding. Our lactation consultants suggested that if we decided to use formula, it might be easier for the baby (and me!) if the first bottle was fed by someone other than myself. My mom came over to help and I remember weeping like a faucet at the idea (gasp! Insert needless clutching of imaginary pearls here!) of my baby consuming food that was fine and healthy and nutritious but that didn't come from my body. Post partem hormones do be wreaking havoc on a person, you get me? In the end, we did overcome our hurdles and a successful breastfeeding journey continued for a long time. But you know what? Things would have been _fine_ either way. Again, fed is best.🤗
P.S. Yes, I am fully and totally aware of the benefits of breast milk. I am also fully and totally aware that the overall mental health of the baby's family has benefits too, and if formula feeds help that situation be optimal, then all is good. Love to all you Mamas, each and every one of you, no matter how you choose to feed your babies.💖
Agree, I had a hard time accepting this because I was a pumping momma, my son just preferred the bottle, but wanted to nurse so bad. I felt like I failed in a way which would cause me so much stress. Eventually, I just had to let go and let the baby be the boss.

Tortilla talk question: Is it hard for Flynn to stay quiet when the babies are napping? I know sometimes he gets excited and enjoys dance parties. Are there times you have to tell him to wait awhile because the babies are sleeping?
One of my granddaughters was a NICU baby and her older sister was allowed to be loud because the baby was used to the noise of the NICU. She’s 3 now and can still sleep through anything.
@@annajosullivan Yeah. We try to be quiet around sleeping kids and sometimes i get surprised by what kids can sleep through. Loud sneeze or someone dropping something. Seconds of panic. Just to realize that baby totally ignored it 😆
You’d be surprised how well some babies sleep when they have older siblings! I work with infants and toddlers and most of them can sleep through anything, babies could be screaming bloody murder and they’re fast asleep 🤣

In my experience I always sleep my baby in the living room with either the radio or music on so she doesn’t wake up easily.

Tortilla talk comment: this goes out to all the people out there who have had to spend any time in a hospital and especially to you Colleen. As someone who lived in the hospital for three months fighting a chronic illness, I know that just being there can make you feel depressed and helpless, the experience can be like a scar. The feelings you had when you were there can last a long time even after it’s over but eventually you will feel yourself again. You are so strong Colleen, you got this!

Hey Colleen, as a premie twin myself (that was in the NICU for 2 weeks) I also love having those separate pictures to look back on. But my advice for you is to not always dress the Wes and Maisy alike, obviously when they are babies and even toddlers then it's fine but my mom let my twin and I have our own style and we only ever dress alike when we want to, this not only helped us grow into a style of our own, but also helps people tell us apart. And now we have very different styles! I'm NOT saying that you shouldn't live out your Mary-Kate and Ashley dreams with the twins dressing alike, bit I've always appreciated the fact that my parents never forced us to dress alike once we were older like (5ish and up). (I'm not trying to tell you how to parent because you are an AMAZING mom, and I see that they aren't always dressed alike) Its just a tip. Also I love your vlogs and videos and what you stand for, Love you Colleen (I hope you see this)

for tortilla talk: i am a fraternal twin and i totally get the "your twin is your built in bff!!" and stuff like that but PLEASE don't force anything or always make them do stuff together. from my experience being a twin, it is sometimes hard to break out of the mould and be individualistic. of course if they ask for matching outfits and to do stuff together then don't discourage them, but please don't force the narrative that all twins must get along all the time simply because they're twins. thanks for reading xx
I grew up with a couple pairs of twins and this is very good advice. It's one thing to match them up as newborn's/toddlers, but when they get older I think you can start to tell if they're into it or not. One of the pairs of twins I grew up with were put in different classes in elementary because they didn't want to be associated as twins (they wanted to be individuals and viewed that way) while another set of twins (I was closer to them in middle/high school) took as many classes together as they could and very legitimately were each other's BFF. Like, neither of them had a "best friend", that person was each other. Im sure as they get older Colleen and Eric will adjust/adapt as the twins are able to form their bond and make it known what their relationship with each other is like.

As a mommy with a career, I felt the same way. I absolutely loved and still love being a mommy however, I love my career as well. I’m a nurse practitioner and took 6 months off to care for my babies but eventually knew I wanted to return to work. Prior to the babies, my job is what identified me and I missed it. Some people are born to be full time mommy’s and I give them so much credit but me returning to work just 3 days a week was a blessing and definitely made me a better mommy. As my therapist said, “just because you became a mommy, doesn’t mean you still can’t be you”.

Have you noticed any changes in your voice like notes that you couldn't hit before but can hit now? Also do you think you'll involve your kids in doing theatre once they get older or when the pandemic dies down?
My aunty had a baby a couple yeaes ago and her voice changed permanently. I'm pretty sure it doesn't happen to all women though.

Every time I see Flynn he makes me so happy! I love that he loves his siblings and family so much! And Daisy is the best cat in the world with your son. If I tried doing that with my cats they would have zoomed to the other room. A few helpful things I’ve heard about getting babies to wean off bottle back to breast is to give them like half the bottle so they aren’t starving and frantic then try switching to breast. Also to just like take a day where you just dedicate most of your time to having loads of skin to skin and free boob access time so they can snack on it, again this avoids the frantic hunger that has no patience for boobs - it can be really hard getting them to switch back over and pumping to feed is so time consuming and taxing there’s not shame in adding formula in when needed ❤️❤️

As a single mom of 4 grown kids. (No twins lol) I did something that my girls have all loved as they turned 18. I started an email for each of them and have been sending the letters, photos etc each month until 18. They all still have those emails and LOVE looking back at their childhood that way. Good luck and you do have the strength even if it doesn't feel like it now
