    A really easy way to get the air out of any cooling system is to park the vehicle on an incline. start the engine, let it warm up to the normal temperature, turn on your heater and your fan on full for a few minutes and then shut it down for the night. The next day all the air will be gone. Tighten the cap rad cap all the way back down. Your cooling system is now completely bled of air.

    If you put a gallon bag under the t stat housing when you remove it, it will catch almost all of the coolant if you’re careful. You can then just pour it back in the recovery tank.

    I didn’t do anything to purge air when I swapped the t stay in my 12 Challenger SRT8. No problems. I think the jiggle valve accounts for this. There is a plug you can remove when you have emptied the whole system for a flush.

    Here is my 2 cents on thermostats. Been doing this 27 years started 1992. We were hauling hogs to market in 100 degree weather, 1974. Head gasket blew on stock pickup we lost all 12 hogs because of it. I always thought heat caused this. So after doing time in the Army I modded my first pickup 1985 gmc S15 with 2.8 V6. That motor quite famous for blowing head gaskets. I bought one did a 160 stat cat delete perf. carb, etc. Big radiator ran 170 degrees. 10000 mile oil changes. Sold truck 2002 with 175000 miles only work was a clutch. Engine ran perfect. Next up a did a dodge Durango with hemi. I see people that do the stat mod on a hemi does 180 stat plus all this new steel in these newer motors right? So I did the 180. At 175000 miles head gasket blown. Now on my JGC hemi it has a 160 stat with tuner of course no CEL. Only 2015 hemi in the state of Texas with a 160 I bet but I love it. Tranny temp today was 186 going home which means I will be getting an aluminum radiator custom made any day now. Oh when it is cool outside the car run 170 water temp so the computer in a Hemi has nothing to do with making a car run a certain water temp. That is determined by the stat you have in it and the size or capacity or capability of your cooling system.

      I am against 180 stats in favor of 160 unless you live in the North- there you would have a cel because the engine runs too cool and then you are in open loop which isn't good. In the deep south most years I never get a cel in winter because it doesn't get that cold here.

  • @makantahi3731
    @makantahi3731 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    there is some book,high performance hemi , builders guide, barry kluczyk, and there are taken in consider every possible tune and one of it is lower thermostat- no need for it because stock is fully open at 88c so if you melt cars fat, it will be more hotter than 180f so stock can do same job, and over winter you will have problem to heat up engine

  • @dominicuri9102

    just add coolant to your reservoir while your purge valve is open. no need to start the car to top off your coolant. However you will need to run the car with your DEFOGGER on MAX HEAT for 15 min after doing any work on your cooling system.

    Why change out thermostat to 190.?? these "newer" cars cooling system ,are designed (yes engineered) to handle this high temperature all day long. that normal,not like in the 1970-- 80 model cars,We all try to keep the heat down as much as possible.... Also the computer is programmed to keep it operating at these temperatures for efficiency, thats what engineering is about...When you "lower" the coolant temp, you are now introducing a bunch of new problems and the (ECM) computer trying to "compensate for this low temperature,Yes it can compensate a percentage of change.but the computer take this much of a change self inflicting Problem for sure,.

      @Ch Salman Naseer Every single car produced after 1990 has had a thermostat above 200 degrees (no matter the hp). You can bet there's a real good reason. 1 better fuel milage 2 better emissions 3 longer catalytic converter life. If the Hellcat comes with a thermostat above 200 degrees do you think the engineers just 'woops' dropped the ball and forgot to put in a 180 or 160 degree thermostat? The answer is NO.

      When you're driving the wind removes heat from the radiator. At idle, the only way to cool the radiator is for the electric fan to run. The computer's program monitors coolant temp and decides when to turn fan ON and OFF. Change the computer program (re-tune).

  • @chetmyers7041

    Notice any change in mileage when dropping from 203 to 180 thermostat? Do you replace the stock 18 lbs radiator cap with lower pressure rating? Does computer throw any codes with this change? People in Maine and Alaska do not do this mod.

      Not really

    • @j.d.mcginn6946
      @j.d.mcginn6946 ปีที่แล้ว

      Change in mileage? If there is 1 mpg at most. No need to replace radiator cap. If you were going even hotter (why??) yes change the cap to higher psi. Computer throw a code? If you go to a 160 in deep south and it freezes for any amount of time it might. I just drive one of our older vehicles then so I don't get codes. On a 180 there won't be any codes at all. If I was in Maine or Alaska or Canada I'd definitely run a 180. Then I'd put a cover in front of the grille (they have factory pieces for this) or just have it made. It's too valuable not to do it. I like to keep my compression in my motor. Stock stats most esp with modern hemis and all chrysler products always run too hot and have early camshaft bearing and head gasket failures.

    Thanks for the install guide! I recently picked up an 06 RT as a project car and it had overheating issues. I swapped out the thermostat with a 180 module and that solved the problem. Well...kinda. It's been running great for about a month until this morning. I had frost on my windows this morning so I started to the car and turned on the heat while I was getting ready to leave. I came out to the car 20 minutes later and the temp was way up there, at about the 3/4 mark and climbing fast. As soon as I started driving it dropped back down below half. Any idea what the problem could be? The fans were running when I popped the hood after driving it a few miles, so I'm not quite sure what the issue could be.

      No changes to fan. Settings need to be changed with a tune.

  • @Ridabig

    Changing the thermostat to a 180 will not make your engine run cooler. It is only the temperature at which it will open to allow coolant to flow to the radiator. Whether you allow the coolant to flow to the radiator at 180 or 200, the engines running temperature will be the same.

      Mine runs around 185 degrees so I’d say it works. Unless i idle for a while then it gets to a bout 215 like normal

    • @j.d.mcginn6946
      @j.d.mcginn6946 ปีที่แล้ว

      Running hotter at idle is due to your undersized stock radiator/cooling system and the fan not turning on if you didnt tune it. Not due to the thermostat.

    Without before & after timed runs for comparison, your thermostat experiment was a total waste of time. The Dodge people built that car to meet all applicable fuel mileage and performance standards. Dropping the engine temps by 25 degrees F on a street machine is just plain wrong. For the long haul, no good can come of this "mod" .
    For street driving, your best bet is to get a MOTORAD Performance thermostat with the factory-recommended temperature.

      I've been running them for years in my cars, trucks, and SUVs, with excellent results and consistant engine temps.
      Stant and Gates didn't perform as well, which is why I switched to Motorad decades ago. Definitely NOT "trash". 😁@@jayygotit_1
