Tool - Ænima Era Live Tours Remastered

  • These songs were curated and remastered from various sources of soundboard and audience recordings around the release of Tool's Ænima. The first track, Die Eier Von Satan, I added a touch of the percussion from the album as it was pretty drowned out. The live album mostly consists of tracks from the Kalamazoo show in 1998. Pushit and Third Eye are consciously left off seeing as the live album professionally released by Tool contains the best versions. H and Jimmy are from Poughkeepsie, New York, 1997, which is possibly the best audience capture from that decade. Right up against the speaker and no distortion, though half the stereo field is very quiet. Possibly best performances I heard of those two songs. Enjoy.

    Holy cow. This is the best remastering I have heard of this board tape. Especially Stinkfist. It is my mix. I was the system tech then monitor engineer on the 97 run so can't take any credit for Poughkeepsie although I do remember that show. In a giant college hall. But the Kalamazoo show is my board tape as I mixed all the 98 shows. I definitely didn't release it into the wild and no idea how it escaped, but kinda glad it did. Side note in 97 they were mixed by Pete Riedling who is now their manager

      Hey that’s awesome man. Thanks for commenting and seriously thank you much for your work here. Whenever I actually talk to anyone about my particular remasters I always make sure to credit the source because the capture was absolutely incredible. A good remaster would not be possible without great sources to work with. Thank you so much for taking the time man.
      I have actually tried multiple times after this to remaster it better, as i am better in general now to when i did these like 7 years ago but I keep just coming back to these myself. I put a lot of effort in. It wasn’t just set and go. I really appreciate it man and i am envious you were a part of this! Cheers man.

      Hopefully we didn't scare you away.. I wanted to ask just out of curiosity... was Stinkfist the bastard of the setlist back then to mix live? Given the two-mic... one distorted and Maynard still in front of the drums? I always hear what sounds like the sound engineer chasing the volume or feedback, or a feedback destroyer going nuts sometimes. Was that the SOB of each performance to mix? I'd love to hear some neat tidbits if you are willing to share them. You would be quite welcome here to share anything. And thanks again for dropping in with that compliment.

      @@JimmyKlef it’s an insane amount of effect so it’s very ‘live’. But I like to live dangerously. I mean it’s supposed to sound exciting rather than safe. I was previously the monitor engineer and it was very very loud up there. Pre in ear monitors. But if you listen the open FX vocal mic also picks up the drums and guitars to give it all extra width. Which then clamps down when he switches to his main one. It wasn’t necessarily difficult. But I just fully rode everything for the shows. There is zero set and forget with this lot. It was so much fun I quit touring after this. Figured I had peaked. With hindsight I still think I was right. I often listen to your remix. Especially as I don’t have any originals.

      A year late to this comment but I absolutely agree. This performance of h is literally outrageous to me. It’s so emotional, and they absolutely nailed it. I hope to god they recorded the show that came from and maybe some day we get the audio from that. It’s a damn shame not to… but at the same time it’s exactly this that’s what made tool so special. The fact you could go to a Tool show and see maybe the best performance of one song or another and it just stays there in memory is/was beautiful.

      James Kleffel How are those coming along? Loving this so far

    • @JimmyKlef
      @JimmyKlef  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      CJ very good. I finally had a good amount of time to work on them (my job is very demanding) and lateralus (show 1)is about 6 hours of work from being complete. Show 2 is probably about 16 away and 10,000 days I barely began. But the good news is that i am being extremely anal about them. I actually have misophonia, so things like bad crowd noise (some is good, but like a big beefy bro going “FUCK YEA MAYNAAARD!” In the middle of disposition or something drives me nuts so i am doing a very detailed job of automating as much as possible to get the best results with as little distraction or unpleasant tonalities as possible. Literally going in by hand and pumping up or dropping out individual frequencies that need the boost or cut... say if the bass needs more balls during an adam solo... ill go in and pump up the bass frequencies specifically for that moment.
      Im doing tons and tons of that so that there will never be any need for anyone to ever feel like they need to make their own or try harder. Because if i know tool... they may never release anything like that. So someone has gotta put in the 500 hours to try to make novice recordings sound pro.
      I suppose thats gonna be me.

    • @JimmyKlef
      @JimmyKlef  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      CJ and to be clear... i did some of that kind of automation on the ones I uploaded... which is probably the majority of the reason they sound better than most others out there. That, and my misophonia. Lol. I can zero in on things very well, nearly autism-like. So its stuff like that that makes it take so long for me to do these things. Plus work and life. But i think, just like how tool creates... its better to wait and wait to receive the best possible thing, rather than just dump out whatever as quick as possible. Figured id do the work like tool does, that way my work is something that fits in their realm and feels about right i guess.
      Really i sound arrogant here, lol but I promise im not really.

      pinkopallinopinko both H. and Jimmy are from the Poughkeepsie NY show on 03/01/1997. There are two known recordings of this show circulating, with one much better than the other.

    • @JimmyKlef
      @JimmyKlef  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ritzy Patrick that is correct. There is also speculation, though its doubtful, that the one version is actually a soundboard recording, that was kind of slightly bad for a soundboard. But it is honestly too good to be an audience recording. We will probably never know for sure... but while i was editing them, i did notice a few things. There was a slight stereo field to the recording. Im aware that field mics, even back then, had that capability, but the clarity of the field, and how it was only ever super specific, like on one tom, was interesting.
      Also, the right side seems to be cut out to some degree. It really sounds as though someones input could have been messed up, which would explain only the slight stereo field, and the not very great recording. If you listen... you can absolutely hear that if the right side of the drums sound came through properly... the whole thing would sound fantastic and exactly like a soundboard.
      My theory.
      Two sources. One was mysterious because its a soundboard and clearly whoever recorded would have gotten in trouble, probably lost their job.
      So we only ever heard about one source, the audience source.
      The guy recording from the board either hooked something up wrong, had a bad cable, or however the board was set up he could only get the left channel somehow.
      Its just too many small reasons as to why it sounds like a soundboard. But in the end, Its just simply too clear to be audience.
      So people just thought it was an audience recording. Especially because the taper of the audience recording stated he was on the left side, which would make sense as to the sound of the board recording.
      Just a theory.
      I also read that people believed it to be a board recording back then.

I have a number of things in the works and even done already, and will come with a lossless download link.
      So it will probably be some other stuff first and soonish. And then i will start revisiting some of the things i did but lost the full quality for to make up for it.
      I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’ll get my butt back into gear again!

      hey hey hey, getting close to sounding political here. We all have our views, Maynard was just playing around, clearly. We gotta be able to skirt by some of this stuff and focus on things outside of politics. I can tell you and anyone else that hasn't listened to basically every recorded moment of Tool... they very much are not nazis and they had a whole phase of pretending to be a crazy preacher on stage. That's why he was saying "unfortunately". He was dressed up as a evangelical preacher guy and donning a character. Anyone who can't think well enough that they miss satire... nobody on the internet is going to help them get there.
