Using a bass amp and cab is also a killer trick if you play with fuzz pedals because you get lots of heavy low end distortion from fuzz pedals (Which often sounds like farts when you play through a guitar amp).
You are the only guitarist who gives us what we want/need to know, on everything I search your videos pop up, and your a expert at the least thanks for the help
My pleasure. Yeah, the Bassman was one of the simplest amp designs ever and it didn't take long for people to find out that the design of it worked great for pretty much anything you wanted to throw at it. Nobody will ever forget the REAL Bassman amps. They will be an all time classic for a good reason. Cheers! Scott
The 15" cabinet that goes with this rig is also 600 watts RMS. So, no problem at all. Perfectly matched. They make a bunch of different lines that are cheap and don't handle the power, but this line is the pro system and they did these right.
Excellent advice. I was a pro bass player for over 50 years, and, for many years, used a PA head with a home built cab with 4x10s plus a tweeter. I could get all the bottom end along with more top than a bass head. It was also great for guitar or guitar and vocals for small solo gigs. Can't go wrong if you need a rig that will do anything.I play a lot of nylon string,flamenco/classical these days and am thinking of trying a bass amp with smallish speakers instead of an expensive acoustic amp.
Sure thing my friend. No problem. They didn't put many clean sounds in the factory presets. Those that did have them were so garbled up with delays going back and forth between the stereo field etc. So, it will be my pleasure.
I once plugged into a guys Ampeg bass tube head and 6x10, it sounded absolutely amazing. One of his friends came running up like the tone police and unplugged me. "You can't play a guitar through a bass amp!"
I just wanted to thank you for your generous time to make all of these videos and give us all honest advice. I just bought my first setup yesterday off Craigslist. After your advice from another video. I have never picked up a guitar in my life. I found what I thought was a steal. Picked up an Ibanez GSR200 Bass with Fender Bassman 60 Amp, Bass guitar for dummies book, 2 cables and Fender gig bag, for $100.00 cash. It is all almost in mint condition and all works and sounds perfect. The guy bought it with the intention of learning and just lost interest in it and took up the drums instead. I wasn't sure if I wanted a Bass or 6string but now that I see I can use the Fender Bassman amp for a regular guitar I can go back on Craigslist and have both! But like you said there are some awesome deals out there on used guitars! The best part is if I loose interest in the Bass I'm only out $100bucks and I will certainly be able to get my money back if I sell it. Thanks again and great videos!
Awesome Bill....now THAT'S how to shop! You did everything right and you will MAKE MONEY on anything that you ever decide to sell. Doesn't it feel great to know that you just filled up your music room for less than the price of one effects pedal?! CONTRATS and thanks for the kind words my friend! Scott
Actually, they will pick them up fine. A lot of bass guitars have used guitar pickups over the decades and have become Iconic for their great tone. The Gibson Grabber G-3 basses used the EXACT same Bill Lawrence pickups that were used in the Gibson S-1 guitars. They sound amazing in those bases. One of my favorites of all time. I bought a case of those pickups recently (NOS) to use for future guitar and bass builds. They cover the whole spectrum with brilliant clarity.
One of the best, clean amps of all time. The distortion that is built in them is notoriously nasty, but nothing that a couple of FX won't cure. But, that amp is legendary for a reason. Just such an amazing clean tone and then you kick in the REAL stereo chorus....nobody had ever heard anything that cool in a self contained combo amp before. It sounded like the tone and stereo spread went all the way around you. It was like seeing your first WELL MADE 3-D movie!
Love your views on guitars and what's actually better compared in prices. The most straight down the line view I've ever heard. You're right it is completely about the bragging rights :)
Yes! I recently bought a Fender Rumble 500 v3 and just messing around I plugged my Guitar into it through my DigiTech RP155. A few minutes later I traded my Guitar stack to the music store for a brand new Fender acoustic...
Exactly! I used to use Bag End cabs for all my guitar stuff. I'd always hear, "Aren't those for bass?" and just kept smiling. Shouldn't have sold them. May get more again. They would work great with my guitar cabs (which are also Bag End). Nice job man!
It's doubtful that you will harm the AMP, but the speaker is a very different story. I've turned tons of speakers into trash with just one note of an open, low E on the bass through a guitar amp. Guitar speakers aren't designed to handle 40 Hertz in the low end of the frequency spectrum, so, when you DO throw that through it, it's like trying to suck a bowling ball through a garden hose......something's gonna give.
Personally I love bass amps for both. I got hooked on it back in my first band. An old Supro Thunderbolt bass tube amp, Ibanez Classic Metal pedal, and my guitar. That was my first rig. Been using bass amps for both instruments mostly ever since. Only ever had one guitar amp and I sold it as soon as I bought another bass amp!
Great video, I liked that you went clean through the amp without any effects so we could hear the the raw sound of the guitar through the amp , very informative . The only thing I would have done differently would have played a few songs from start to finish just to give a full perspective of what the guitar would sound like. Thanks again for the video
I have been using a bass amp with my detune and extended range guitars for 12 years and I have been telling people and I get it "won't sound the same " argument until I crank it up so loud the amp knocks them back in their chair. No guitar amp I know of can take the lower frequency and punch it out the same as a good bass amp. With the right cab and head set up highs and lows just roll better than guitar amps. I use a 500 watt clean channel 4x10 w/ tweeter combo Ashdown bass amp with line 6 pod xt and it kills any guitar amp. I totally agree with this dude guitar amps just don't have the punch 👊 of a bass amp. And I know from years of buying guitar gear no amp I have owned with all the fx and gizmos built-in has ever been good at loud volume they either get to muddy with low end or distort. Sometimes simple is better a good clean channel amp with no fx or overkill eq stuff with a good processing peddle or peddle board that is even if you use any fx. For play bass I use absolutely no fx plug right in to the amp. My 7string sound is so clean sounding and crisp and with distortion it's is punchy and really distinct not muddy with little to no feedback
Glad to see someone cutting through the sales-garbage and ad-copy bullshit! One that wasn't mentioned, but I'm sure you're well aware of...the Marshall Super Bass. Used the be the pawn-shop jewels just waiting to be snapped up...hell, Kustom has a solid-state bass amp(think it's a 115 combo)...raun a Tele through it, beautiful sounds...hit it with a garden-variety TS-9, bar the doors...LOL. Thanks for putting all of this common-sense information out there!
How about that Rainer 7-string Telecaster you had? That was an excellent tip you shared with us: a bright, clean single-coil 7-string instead of a sludge-monster. Probably the only 7-string I would ever try - and I think I'd run it straight into my Fender Twin. Do you still have that thing?
Scott the one thing I think we need to keep in mind with extended range guitars is that they are still a guitar and still are intended to be a midrange instrument. Even if you are tuned down into bass guitar frequency's the guitars pick-ups will not pick-up much of the very low frequencies.
Im killing my self for the last month researching what affordable guitar amp to buy to go well with my modeling pedal and I cant find it until I found your vid :) Good man! I am now browsing bass amps ... happy whistling ....
Hey Scott, I did just that for my 9-string, buying a Fender Super Bassman Pro. I just figured it would handle the bottom end better, and plugged it in at the music store, and WOW......... nuff' said.....
Yeah i dig Fender Bassman amps too. Use to have one and loved it. But for the last ten years I've been using a Roland KC-550 acoustic amp (made for keyboards) and it sounds great too. Super clean, lots of bottom end. In fact, no matter what I plug into it (has four channels) it sounds great . I run a mic through a Vocal FX processor, acoustic guitar, electric through an FX processor, a bass, and anything off my PC. Everything comes through super clean.
This is awesome Scott. I actually play guitar and bass in 2 different bands and I've never tried this or even thought it was possible. Great Video.....you just totally opened up so many new doors for me.
I mostly use a small bass amp in our band practice room for my 6 string (tuned like a 7 string in drop a) because it also gives more clarity to the lower strings. :P
Been doing this for years... Crate shockwave 350 watt 4x10 bass cab With the horn on... Sometimes add a 4x12 peavey cab... Pod hd Ibanez rg..drop b Brutal Kids are like, how in the hell can i get my 6505 to sound like that?
Doude you gotta record some of that or link me something I’ve been heavily thinking on switching to a bass cab ever since I saw this video And w the knowledge that thin lizzy ran that sort of set up as well for a while
Nice vid. I too prefer bass amps for guitar. They make you sound ( not to be necessarily louder ) but a lot more "sonic". You get way more wider range frequency and cleaner headroom without breaking especially if solid state. I'll instead will use an overdrive pedal for that. Tube amps are another entity if you want that internal overdrive breakage. I'd never like the idea of over working tube amps which can end up being preamp/power amp "tube" costly. But to each his/her own. Everyone be careful out there..
Yeah I just got back into playing guitar about 6 months ago. All I had for amps was an old Yamaha AR-2500 Bass amp. Just for kicks I tried using it for practicing. Sounds great. Then I bought an Electroharmonix Double Muff pedal. This is the perfect sound for stoner metal in my opinion. I may try to buy a Johnson Milenium amp in the future but right now the amp/pedal I have is perfect!
Really enjoyed watching this Scott. Have been bouncing this Idea for a couple days now, (would have tried it but I do not own a bass amp) Answered some questions for sure. "Herpie trails"! 😄
Great video! And I totally agree with you, a bass amp and/or cabinet can really fatten up a guitar tone. And also, I heard bass players sometimes use guitar cabinets for their bass sound. Rob Trujillo actually mentioned that on an interview on Dunlop TV.
Thanks. Yeah, a lot of bass players will use the guitar cabinets for their top end and throw a crossover in there. My favorite sounding rig is the large one in this video: Scott Grove's Bass Rigs Amps Speakers Rack Etc. It's got 8X10's for the subs and the tops are 8X8s with a couple of large compression horns. SOOOOOO clean and clear and as puncy as you can get with zero speaker flop. Pure heaven. Guitar through it is equally as impressive.
I bought a used 2014 Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue because it has the 1959 bassman circuit for the clean channel, as does the Hot Rod Deluxe. Since I play clean jazzy stuff I wanted that legendary Bassman sound. . Playing my PRS through stock BDRI was horrible. It was icepicky and thuddy. I put in a Frommel tone stack mod kit and a Celestion G12H speaker and it made a huge rich tone difference. I was happier than a tornado in a trailer park. I cant say enough about Celestion G12H Cream Back speakers. They even In my opinion beat out a Ted Weber hand built. On the other hand, Eminence makes 90% of all speakers in amps today, even likely the Fender Jensens. Most all Eminence speakers are muddy and lifeless but, OK if you like a lot of mud and distortion. My Fromel modded BDRI now sounds very alive and rich more like a 65 hand wired black face Bassman. I tried it through a bass 2-10 cab, it sounded Awesome. Also like you said, I plugged into a Kustom passive 100 watt 12 in PA cabinet. It was great; rich with the tweeter expressing the sparkly highs. BTW: any of you lucky people who own a Fender SuperChamp XD and think they sound like crap with that crummy Fender 10 inch in them, they do, but plug it into a cheapo $118 passive Kustom 12 in PA cab and it will blow a Blues Jr away and perhaps a stock BDRI. In my opinion if the sound is "alive" it keeps you playing and loving music. Too many people give up playing because they can't get that sound that raises goose bumps on their arms. Thanks Scott for encouraging us to keep experimenting.
Thanks for the tip. I'm back trying to play after a long hiatus. Want to upgrade my old cheap Fender Rumble I bought with my bass, and I also just bought a Telecaster, so I've been looking for a good bass amp that's good for guitar too
Great vid Scott. I always thought it was odd that people playing 7,8,9,10 string guitars were using regular amps. I'd love to hear your Johnson head through the bass cab. Thanks again!
Thanks! They are super clean sounding. I just picked up 2 Hartke cabs that have the 4 10's in each one plus a 5" for the highs. Then there is another cabinet that goes on top of those 2 cabinets that has 4 of the 5" speakers in it. That's a clean sounding rig too.
Cool vid as always! I've got a setup using my Fender Superchamp single 10 inch speaker + 15watt running into an Ashdown Five-Fifteen single 15 speaker inch + 100 watt and the sound is excellent! Sweet balance! Thumbs up dude! Try a Les Paul through this setup clean or the Iceman!
I have been running a Fender Rumble 25 in church with my guitar. Thank you for confirming my thought pattern. Any suggestions for playing with a church organ?
Scott, thanks for posting this. I trust your opinion on this, so I will run this by you even though I have gotten the same answer from other people in the past. If you did the reverse, ie., run a bass through a guitar amp, will you damage the amp? The prevailing thoughts I have always heard is that the lower frequencies will cause damage because the amp is not designed for it. Any truth to this? Thanks.
I have a Ampeg V4-B with a 210 and a 115, I’m a bass player. But I also love electric guitars. I’m picking up a Gretsch Tennessee Rose tomorrow. Would that sound good? I’ve bought a reverb pedal to sweeten up the sound.
Hey Scott. I recently purchased a Mark Bass CMD JB Players School 200W 1x15 Bass Combo Amp at Guitar Center. Got on sale for $400. I use it with a Fender MIM Jazz bass. The amp doesn't have a tweeter. I want to get a 6 string guitar soon. Will it sound good though this amp? Your videos are very informative. Thanks.
Hey Scott Doing the bass cabinet amp thing Accoustic B115-B200H Can I chain in my practice amp to get some distortion. Watching video now so sorry I you already answered this question
The Mexican Strats are great guitars. The secret to keeping any Strat in tune is to eliminate that horrible whammy system. Here is my video on how to do it. It won't cost you one single dime. Takes about 5 minutes out of your day. watch?v=opmWhJ2Z9DI Let me know what is not smooth about your fretboard and I'll help you with that one too. Cheers. Scott
Scott I had bad experiences with compressor pedals in the past. In the old 90's rack days I used an Alesis 3630 ( think that is correct). but I found a new love with the Empress compressor. It on the floor, as well as balances my pickups with little to no noise, but I'm getting flack from the local guys calling me a cheater. (strat/tele player) they told me to go to an old school comp that adds so much noise or buy a Les paul. Should I just tell them to fuck off. Or keep what im doing Cheating
Hi Scott. What about using a bass cab with a standard MA head, or does the same apply? I have an old HH MA 100, and I am looking for a cab for it; found a well priced bass cab 2x12, a Kustom DE210H on the second hand market but I do not know whether it will be a good match. Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Have a nice day.
i've never seen a set neck tele. maybe because i see the price tag and don't even pick it up. haha. but that's pretty awesome. i bet that adds a little sustain :)
Hello Scott, greetings from Mexico! I have just one question. I have a Marshall DSL 40c and it is freaking awesome, but it doesn't have the same bottom end or that punchy sound as a bass amplifier. The question is: If I want to keep my amplifier but I change the speaker to the one a bass amp would use, will it have the same bottom end? Thanks man!
Floyd Savage Don't change the speaker. You may want to use it again for other proposes. Unplug the speaker connection in the back. Get a bass cabinet with a tweeter to insure the highs are super clean. When on stage micing the new cabinet, mic both the speaker and tweeter.
I have been using my Orange bass amp with a guitar for excellent results! I guess that the same is not true if I would use my guitar amp with a bass...
Can you run the Bass amp through a " Guitar " ( not bass ) effects pedal , into your guitar ? I tried a Boss ME- 50 Guitar effects pedal , and the sound volume on the Bass Amp , automatically became very low . I was worried about damaging something .... any thoughts ? Respect and thanks in advance .
Using a bass amp and cab is also a killer trick if you play with fuzz pedals because you get lots of heavy low end distortion from fuzz pedals (Which often sounds like farts when you play through a guitar amp).
Yeah I think Josh Homme used to do this when he played in Kyuss
GIGeorge23 yeh he did. Sounded great man..

I've always loved using bass amps for guitar. Good to see someone I do look up to also using it
Someone FINALLY caught that one! Too cool!

Sounds incredible. I thought about doing this, but I wasn't sure. I am so glad you are showing this to people.
Been waiting on you to put up a new video Scott! I really enjoy everything you put up on TH-cam. Helps me pass the time and learn a thing or 2.

Great videos. I've learn a lot! But I have to ask, what's in all those file folders behind you?
Bass speakers all the way. After farting on guitar amp for a while I started playing on bass amp. It's more enjoyable to me (not the neighbors :)
You are def right SCOTT I used an old AMPEG for years liked that extra punch and clean sound ,
Nice one Scott fantastic sound.
hope you and your family are as well.
regards
clive
I mostly use a small bass amp in our band practice room for my 6 string (tuned like a 7 string in drop a) because it also gives more clarity to the lower strings. :P
Hammer of the Gods come down on this clean setup!
Been doing this for years...
Crate shockwave 350 watt
4x10 bass cab
With the horn on...
Sometimes add a 4x12 peavey cab...
Pod hd
Ibanez rg..drop b
Brutal
Kids are like, how in the hell can i get my 6505 to sound like that?
Doude you gotta record some of that or link me something
I’ve been heavily thinking on switching to a bass cab ever since I saw this video
And w the knowledge that thin lizzy ran that sort of set up as well for a while
I've had the Roland 60 chorus amp for nearly 10 yrs. Fantastic amp! Wish I had the 120. The chorus is phenomenally clean and lush.
Nice vid. I too prefer bass amps for guitar. They make you sound ( not to be necessarily louder ) but a lot more "sonic". More fantastic original work. Keep well, Scott.
Thanks Scott, this video was really helpful - doing research on getting the best low end response for guitar.
Think Kyuss, monstrous evil fuzzy tone through a bass cab!
i play a 7 string in drop G, i definitely play around with this idea. awesome video scott.
Mr.Groove, I have tried this method with a steelguitar.... monstrous
I'm glad it works for you. I like it with a steel as well. Lots of good, clean power.
Yeah I just got back into playing guitar about 6 months ago. All I had for amps was an old Yamaha AR-2500 Bass amp. Just for kicks I tried using it for practicing. Sounds great. Great vid Scott! I played through a Fender Bassman amp the other week for the first time in my life......really amazing amp
I also play bass so I hook up my Marshall Vintage Modern to my old 3 way Euphonic Audio Bass Cab and Epifani 4 x 10 bass cab..sounds awesome to me...

Hartke bass combo amps make great guitars amps, bc of the "shape" knob
Thanks for the tip. I'm back trying to play after a long hiatus. Want to upgrade my old cheap Fender Rumble I bought with my bass, and I also just bought a Telecaster, so I've been looking for a good bass amp that's good for guitar too
love you dude! keep vids coming we have missed you!
Great vid Scott. I always thought it was odd that people playing 7,8,9,10 string guitars were using regular amps.
I'd love to hear your Johnson head through the bass cab. Thanks again!
Thumbs up for all the Gene Simmons Bass's and the use of the Bo Diddley beat!
Boy I wish I could like this video of your twice :) What a nice sound.
those cheap rumbles sound good for guitar if dialed correctly, and theyre amazing bass amps for the price
Man that Tele is beautiful is that quilted maple
Love the Ashdown bass cabs.
I.E Adam Jones Tool
I have been running a Fender Rumble 25 in church with my guitar. Thank you for confirming my thought pattern. Any suggestions for playing with a church organ?
Scott, thanks for posting this. I trust your opinion on this, so I will run this by you even though I have gotten the same answer from other people in the past. If you did the reverse, ie., run a bass through a guitar amp, will you damage the amp? The prevailing thoughts I have always heard is that the lower frequencies will cause damage because the amp is not designed for it. Any truth to this? Thanks.
Hi Scott, not to go off topic too much but could you do a demo with 2 (or more) amps using an AB box and or a stereo chorus/delay?
beautiful guitar and good tone man
dude that sounded sweet!
beautiful guitar
I'm thinking about slapping some Eminence Delta 10's in my Traynor 80w 4x10. I really love cold, sterile cleans with plenty of low end represented.
I have a Ampeg V4-B with a 210 and a 115, I’m a bass player. But I also love electric guitars. I’m picking up a Gretsch Tennessee Rose tomorrow. Would that sound good? I’ve bought a reverb pedal to sweeten up the sound.
Should sound great, especially with the reverb.
Thanks.
Beautifull Telecaster !! *-*
Nice review thanks
Thanks you Paul.
Hey Scott Doing the bass cabinet amp thing Accoustic B115-B200H Can I chain in my practice amp to get some distortion. Watching video now so sorry I you already answered this question
Can you show how you set up a clean tone on your Johnson JM 150. Thanks
The Mexican Strats are great guitars. The secret to keeping any Strat in tune is to eliminate that horrible whammy system. Here is my video on how to do it. It won't cost you one single dime. Takes about 5 minutes out of your day.

Let me know what is not smooth about your fretboard and I'll help you with that one too.
Cheers.
Scott
dig your guitar colors
the "hag" tele is beautiful!
Excellent practical, practice.
Or keep what im doing Cheating
very instructive..thx dude mr guitar preacher :-)))
Scott, just wondering what your thoughts are on the Roland 120 Jazz chorus amp?
i've never seen a set neck tele. maybe because i see the price tag and don't even pick it up. haha. but that's pretty awesome. i bet that adds a little sustain :)
it appears to be a thru neck
You're pretty hip for an older dude.
Scoot what do you Think about Yamaha THR10? The new C version?
Thanks man!!
Hey Scott to go with your ghost builders video. How about a ghost players video. That should really piss people off LOL.
I have been using my Orange bass amp with a guitar for excellent results! I guess that the same is not true if I would use my guitar amp with a bass...
my father bought a v4bh anhhes either getting a 2x12 or a 1x15, i have a '62 japenese strat reissue to play on it, this is gonna be interesting
I actually started out with bass and well, never actually played a guitar amp with my guitar.
hey Scott any chance you could redo this with all your effects thru a Johnson millennium ?
Can you run the Bass amp through a " Guitar " ( not bass ) effects pedal , into your guitar ? I tried a Boss ME- 50 Guitar effects pedal , and the sound volume on the Bass Amp , automatically became very low . I was worried about damaging something .... any thoughts ? Respect and thanks in advance .
Thank you, very much!
Glad it helped!
@@groovydjs there is a 15-in fender steel guitar combo that I think I'm going to buy for $700.
I've got a Peavey Max 110 bass amp. Is it okay to get a Big Muff pedal to use on it with a seven string Jackson Dinky? I also have a Fender Rumble 25.
Sure thing, add all the effects you want.
I have a mexican strat its all I can afford how can I get it to stay in tune and have a smoother fret board
