Thank you for sharing!! The biggest takeaway is the options that you have when you become a better financial steward. You get a say so and not tied to staying just for the income. Congrats on being in that place and I look forward to your next adventure!!!

I’m a public school teacher in metro Detroit, when you said you were going to work in a school , I said a prayer for you. I headed my schools trauma response team it is a lot . The focus of admin and the mental health staff is triage and not really addressing the root causes , teach coping skills , identifying triggers etc. Teachers have 100+ students that they are responsible for, they often may not notice students struggling until they are in full dis regulation/ meltdown. When I watch your Vlog of your workday I knew that you had a really high standard and wanted to really help students and that’s very difficult to do in a school setting. You can’t really provide therapy, you’re basically doing therapeutic activities and sending students back into an environment with people who don’t fully understand how to support the students or have the skill set to do so. I knew you would be frustrated because of how organized you are. Public schools sadly are often chaotic unless you’re in an affluent district. I would also add that you started during a really turbulent time i.e. post Covid and you started in second semester so you didn’t get the opportunity to set the tone for how your year would go. There’s certainly a difference when you start at the beginning of the school year and mid year. I love that you are clear on your boundaries and doing what’s best for you. That is something that I struggle with, but I did resign from a school this year because I was experiencing racial intimidation.

I wouldn’t have told my supervisor and colleagues that I’m actively looking for a new position without having first secured a firm position…You seem like a really nice person and I would assume that your colleagues seem genuinely nice too for you to have shown your hand like that (I’ve worked with some horribly manipulative ppl in the past so I couldn’t imagine doing that & possibly putting a bullseye on my back). I would have simply voiced my concerns while quietly planning my exit. I would definitely recommend that to 99% of other workers out here not tell fellow employees that you don’t really know or your employer that you are job searching unless you’re using it as a strategy to gain a job promotion or salary increase

This is fairly common in education to give notice before a new placement. They usually start looking for replacement in the spring. So in order for the school to have time to find a quality candidate, the more time the better. I have notified my supervisors in February or March that I was planning to change schools for the fall.

I was a teacher for years, and I come from a family with lots of educators. I didn't work in K-12 in large part because I saw how broken that system was. We do not put the funding and energy we should in to our public school system, and it chases off excellent employees and leaves many of your youth with a mediocre education. I hope your next job is a better fit.

15 yr educator. Former teacher now.
You were diplomatic in your critique.
Education works at best if at all for the least disruptive average to slightly above avg student with run of mill problems if not minimal issues.
I did appreciate the autonomy. My first non system experience with hands on to micro management styles was enough for me to say I’m going to be an entrepreneur.

Hi Shay, Continue to make this a matter of prayer. I worked a job that often tested my resolve to maintain my conviction to my values. Unfortunately, I initially allowed my concern for my material needs lead my decisions. In the end, I survived with my values in tact but I struggled until I actually put my mental health first. I suggest you remain true to your values and let your conscious be your guide. I pray and hope that you have peace with the choices you make.

I’m new to your channel. After tuning in, I am subscribing. I’ve spent 16 years in the traditional school system, and it was very interesting to say the least. The students were great to work with, they were never the problem. I done well financially, but working in such an atmosphere can stunt your growth. Congrats to you for keeping your options open. I stayed too long. However, when we don’t move and change at appropriate times, the Lord steps in and make those changes for us.
Now I’m happy. I work in a educational system, but the students who come to see me do so because they want to, not because they’re mandated to do so. I’m not asked to “duty” or do things that are not Social Work related. There were parts of Social Work I didn’t know existed, and I’ve been Blessed to engage in some of those areas. I can’t wait to see your next steps!

School psychologist here. Sounds like a regular thing that happens within schools for many mental health and human services professionals. Can be very different from other settings and often you are forced to live in the “grey” which is very uncomfortable and often leads to weird ethical situations. Even had an admin state that they saw no need for us to have a supervisor that understood our role/ethical mandates which eventually led to a legal issue after a while that could have been prevented with a clinical supervisor on staff. I would say though occasionally you can find a more pleasing situation when school districts are changed (sometimes….). This could be why there is a mass exodus of these professionals from schools right now and thus creating shortages in schools. Good luck on your path!

As an educator, this touched me on so many levels. I probably learned more about what our SW do with kids while they are holding space with them from this video than in my whole 2 decade career! I also had a light bulb moment that sessions and strategies should be given to teachers tailored to each student. Sometimes when students are not having a good few moments....it impacts the whole class and if I knew EXTRA strategies that would help. This past Tuesday I realized I am ready to leave, probably won't because something 🙃 about education pulls on your heart strings. I respect your willingness to reflect and possible move on, I need the courage to do the same. I also have respected your financial moves over the years and how you are in a space where you don't have to necessarily make a decision right now. Long comment...just so relatable

I can tell you that regardless of if you are working in public, private, catholic or charter schools to a certain extent the school systems are shady. I have worked for over a decade as a Home Based Therapist, I am a LCSW, I have almost a year of working as a medical social worker and 2 years of experience as a school social worker. I am bilingual in Spanish. I am also a Licensed School Social Worker but when I went to apply to work at some high schools I would have individuals that have significantly less experience than what I make now they have no licensure as a Social Worker or School Social Worker , and some last year were interns. The difference is that these individuals that were chosen instead of me were paid significantly less and it is insulting when the school system would make you jump through hurdles and try to make it seem like they choose the best candidate when they chose the cheapest candidate. I hate to say this but as someone that has worked in a Community Center, Community Clinic and a School I can tell you that often in the social work field optics is prioritized over substance and when it comes to assessing, adjusting, having logistic coordination, aligning expectations with reality and valuing the input of professionals in health, mental health, special education is not treated as a priority.
In School Worker you will often see senior admin that will get on ego trips, normalize penalizing students and staff for things outside of their control. Education should be focused on growth and implementation. The factor that so many schools failed to take a personal inventory and assess ways to achieve growth in students before there is a significant deficit is concerning (regardless of learning disability). The factor that so many schools will continue to pacify the incompetent and ineffective common core standards which hiders’ students is problematic.

Many types of social workers work in the school. Some school social workers have state school certification without the license and provide "support" to the students and not "clinical" services.

Thank you for all u do to help out these children ...but yes it's a stressful environment when u give it ur best and not get all the support u need from everyone!!

This was interesting. I currently work as a therapist within the school, but I am stationed at one school; and not employed directly with the school district. However, at my school there’s a team of us (5). I’m grateful for my experience. I love this population, but I certainly could not imagine being a therapist within a school without support or clinical supervision. I believe a system without support sort of puts the clinician at risk for burn out and does a disservice to the students. Good luck on your job search!

If you do end up staying you should try to sit down with the supervisor as things need to change.

Why do you think systems don't teach children about the earliest working ages and healthiest birthing ages, to prepare them for parenting and homeownership??

As an educator, I appreciate your video but please try to stick it out. Our children need you. I will admit that the public school system is very different than working in corporate or private sector. Try not to think about what doesn't work and think about how many children that you've reached in the 5 months of employment. Peace and blessings to you 🙏🏾
