Video Spoilers: So, you said your goal was the minimum NUMBER of fruit pieces collected. If the number of pieces is the goal, then wouldn’t you try and only collect the pieces that have the highest juice yields? Grapes are horrible since they give so little juice per fruit piece. Whereas the watermelon half is excellent as it gives 1.5 juices. Wouldn’t it make more sense to collect the watermelon half (1.5 juice), one of the other largest pieces of watermelon (0.5 juices), and half of a starfruit (1 juice) for 3 juices total with only 3 pieces of fruit? Edit: You definitely over complicated it for yourself! Glad to see you made it there in the end though 😂
A: It takes 7 pieces Me: Why not use halves that have more juice to need less? A: All you need are 3 star fruit pieces Me: Why not use the watermelon pieces to make it easier? A: It takes 1 star fruit piece and 2 watermelon Me: About time
14:08 I can actually explain this one. basically, a cutscene is supposed to play when you get the very first strawberry you encounter on day 2, however it most likely doesn't apply to watermelon pieces on day 4 since the game A: doesn't count the watermelon as a full fruit, and B: doesn't expect you to get a watermelon as your first fruit. the cutscene itself shows the fruit being analysed and then being turned into juice saving the seeds for later. since you collected the first watermelon piece not only did the cutscene not play, but it also just gave you the juice. as an added note, the strawberry on day one doesn't register as a collected fruit either so maybe it's just hard coded into the game.
The first fruit you acquire in a playthrough automatically triggers a cutscene where the ship juices it. Which is why the first piece didn't show and why there was already juice in the canister
I'm really amazed, not just he finished the game with only 7 pieces of fruit, he finished the game in 7 days, something I think I'm not good enough to do. Not satisfied, he them tryed to finish the game with just 3 piece of fruits. He achieved it. Congratulations guy, you are incredible!
The first watermelon disappeared because when you usually collect fruit for the first time it activates a cutscene which auto juices it so that’s what happened
Found this channel about a week ago and have been binging your challenge videos. (Had no idea just how broken Pikmin 1 and 2 are, dang!) Though it turned out you didn't need it in the end, I'll just say you don't have to solve squat for the star fruit in Tropical Wilds. You can just lock on to it and charge Winged Pikmin to tear it down. All these years later I still remember that being the first thing I tried on my first playthrough. Only way I've ever gotten it on several runs.
when the meerslug is doing the underground phase, I believe it's possible to charge a large amount of pikmin onto its lips (it might need to be rock pikmin but I'm not sure) and it'll do enough damage to make it fly up into the air before it gets the chance to eat any pikmin.
14:04 It was the first fruit you collected during the entire play through. If you played the game how it was designed to, the first fruit you collect (a strawberry) is analyzed and juiced as soon as it’s collected, even if it’s in the middle of the day. You skipped the cutscene, so it seemed like the piece wasn’t registered, though it was. It’s no glitch, it’s just what happens when you bring your first fruit to the S.S. Drake.
The firs time you collect a fruit is is automatically added as juice, complete with a cutscene telling you that fruit gets juiced, all others are added at end of day. You're supposed to do it with the strawberry, and not a partial fruit. The partial fruit being the first one breaks the cutscene, but still adds the juice
the first piece of fruit is automatically juiced, because there's normally the whole cutscene with the strawberry on the day you rescue brittany. if you skip the strawberry then the next fruit you get is counted as the "first fruit" and gets juiced regardless
About the watermelon thing. The first fruit you ever collect. The game has a cutscene where it analyzes and juices the fruit to teach you how to get more food. Normally this is done in Day 2 but because you skipped all the fruit it led to this Watermelom being used up in the tutorial, so the first piece is juiced up right when you get it instead of being saved for the end of the day like the rest
Re: Missing Watermelon The fruit on the side of the screen are fruit that have not been juiced yet. Since the watermelon was the first fruit collected in the run, the cutscene for juicing it played but he skipped it. Just like when you connect the first strawberry, you get a cutscene and it doesn't appear in the side of the screen.
14:25 when you get your first fruit, a cutscene plays and juices it automaticly. It doesn't show as an icon after. You skipped that cutscene. Because the first fruit you're suppost to get is the Sunseed Berry but in your case it's a Crimson Banquet, it isn't able to fill a whole glass of juice.
the star fruit solution is three half pieces of fruit, so 1.5 and the solution you did was 5/6 and 2/10, so one and one thirtieth of a fruit, and is therefore less fruit. but the two watermelon pieces and one star fruit piece is still less since that's 2/6 and 1/2 so it's ultimately 5/6ths of a fruit.
14:18 since it was your first fruit, the game would usually do that cutscene where you juice the strawberry instantly, but since you didn’t get a strawberry, the game freaked out and just didn’t count it and turned into juice.
The missing watermelon is caused by the cutscene that plays when you get your first fruit, but due to it not being a full fruit the cutscene is skipped
Regarding the watermelon piece, when you collect your first fruit of the playthrough a cutscene plays juicing it immediately, normally this is with the strawberry in the garden of hope but the game is flexible and does it with whatever
The shaggy long legs in distant tundra can be reached as soon as you build both bridges by going back into the yellow onion cave and throwing a captain. It's still too slow, but it doesn't require the winged pikmin
I don't know if this is necessary anymore but the reason why the watermelon dissapears is because when you grab the first strawberry in the game a cutescene shows it being transformed into juice the moment you collect it, so, the game doesn't know how to process that the fruit is not a strawberry and just skips the cutescene of the first fruit being transformed.
My theory with the watermelon is that since it was the first fruit collected on the file, the game would have played the cutscene for when you analyze your first fruit and it juices said fruit in the middle of the day. Since the fruit would have already been juiced, the game would see no need to keep it updated on the counter as that might cause an issue where the game gives you extra juice from one piece of fruit
14:24 I know what's happening! When you collect your first piece of any fruit the game plays a cutscene for it, not count it in the UI, and automatically juice it. In a normal playthrough, this cutscene will play for the sunseed berry in the garden of hope. But because you skip it the game treated the watermelon piece as the first piece of fruit.
Good job getting the count down to 1.16~ fruit! Depending on how you count the watermelon, 2/6 pieces is either 1/3. 2/3 juice canisters could be, 2/3, or the large half piece and medium quarter piece could be 3/4. Add that to the 1/2 a starfruit and bam, you get a differing value. I'm of the opinion that the best run is either the absolute least collections total to get the 3 canisters, OR, the least total collected, using the juice rating of each piece as a measure of collection percentage... which, I think only the watermelon has differing values on individual pieces to really matter? but still.
hey, that first piece of watermelon was not a bug, you skipped the cutscene that happens when you get your first piece of fruit. It also juices it for you during the cutscene.
What happened with the fruit is that normally you get the Sunseed Berry first which then triggers a cutscene where the Drake juices it for you immediatley and doesn't count it. But since your first fruit was the Watermelon piece first it did the same thing but without the cutscene most likely due to the fact Nintendo didn't predict you getting a fruit that far in the game first.
What could have happened with the watermelon is the game glitched out because normally your first fruit has a cutscene where it’s juiced immediately, and the game didn’t know what to do with the watermelon and not a strawberry so it just juiced it immediately with no cutscene
the first fruit you get in this game causes a juicing cutscene to start (think the strawberry in the garden of hope) so since it's already been juiced it doesn't appear in the end of day juicing cutscene
14:02 actually what happened is the game usually forces you into a cutscene when you collect ur very FIRST piece of fruit. This cutscene actually shows the fruit being juiced MID-DAY thus adding juice to a canister. You skipped this cutscene so that's probably why it didnt make any sense on how you had juice already. Also you probably need to still count that one then bc it does indeed exist
heres my theory for the watermelon thing: the game normaly plays a cutscene when you collect your first fruit so I think that that cutscene was supposed to play for your first part of the watermellon that was collected but it didn't because you weren't meant to collect your first piece of fruit that late into the game so it didn't play the cutscene
35:05 do you hear the little Pikmin in the background ? Looks like at press A, they're a capitain having to take care of lousy and cute little creatures IRL as well
The water Mellon glitch was because you never triggered the cutscene of getting your first fruit which automatically juices it during the day but the watermelon was your first fruit so the game glitched so it automatically juiced it but it did not play the cuttsence
The problem you had with the watermelon was because you got your first fruit. They’re supposed to be a cut scene showing the fruit getting juiced during the day but the game probably didn’t register the cut scene because it’s supposed to be done at the garden of Hope. You want proof, start a new game of Pikmin three and go to the point where you find your first strawberry collect it and see what happens😁
You don't have to do the entire weight puzzle in Tropical Wilds to get the Star Fruit. You can throw Yellows onto the fruit from the ledge just up from the first "elevator". Throw 10 Yellows up the first ledge, put lone Captain onto elevator, throw two Yellows onto bouncy mushroom, throw 10 Yellows onto Star Fruit, done.
So, let's go over the "glitch" with the Watermelon. When you first collect a piece of fruit, the juicing mechanic is explained through a cutscene where the animation that normally is played at the end of the day is played immediately to show you gaining juice. However, because of how the game is coded that fruit has to be removed from your collection history for the day to keep it from being juiced at the end of the day. So the juice for the first fruit you collect is instantly added into your food reserves. In this instance, because the game doesn't register the multi piece fruit as collected until all the pieces are collected, the game never triggered the flag to play the juicing cutscene but still awarded you the juice and removed the first piece from the collection history since that flag is tied to the collection and not the triggering of the fruit increment counter. If you still have the save file, I'd be really curious to see you go back to that day and collect all the pieces to see what that cutscene would look like. If it would only juice the first piece found or all 6 pieces.
Ok, I know what happened with the watermelon piece. The first time you collect a fruit in the game, there's a cutscene where the Drake shows you the fruit and make it into juice. You probably skipped that cutscene and didn't notice, so the first piece of watermelon was already been made into juice
from outward appearances, the only way to reduce the fruit count further would be to change the metric for counting, being that 7 days is a hard minimum. if we say a Piece of Fruit is equal to a Whole Fruit and forego the in-game count, I'm sure you can route 2 fruits w/ a 2.5 & .5, or a 2 & 1 juice fruit pairing (this seems like the most likely evolution imo). alternatively, we count a partial fruit as equal to its corresponding whole fruit (collecting 1 grape from a bunch is counted the same as collecting all 20) at which point, collecting the whole watermelon would be a "single" fruit which fulfills the entire 3-juice requirement on its own
The reason why there was only 4 pieces of watermelon even though you collected 5 was because the first fruit in a normal playthrough is supposed to be the sunseed berry, but since you skipped the sunseed berry the drake's cutscene glitched out and i'm guessing the games code glitched out too and made it so it didn't count the first piece but still gave you the juice. Sorry if this doesn't make sense I am very tired at 4:44am
During normal Pikmin 3 gameplay, once you collect your first piece of fruit the game will interrupt you with a cutscene of it juicing the fruit, the first fruit you ever collect will be juiced instantly after collecting instead of at the end of the day, my guess is that because this scene happens in garden of hope and you were in tropical wilds when you first collected your first fruit (it being the watermelon mind you) the game had a brain fart because it technically shouldn’t be possible for you to do that, so it skips any cutscene, I bet if the first piece to go in was the biggest one, it would have shown you that you got a jar out of the blue
I have a theory on the watermelon. If I recall correctly, the first fruit collected triggers a special animation and is then juiced immediately. My theory is that not creating a full juice somehow bugged this cutscene and didn't play it.
You know, I might be imagining it, but I'm starting to suspect Press A doesn't think very highly of me.

basically, a cutscene is supposed to play when you get the very first strawberry you encounter on day 2, however it most likely doesn't apply to watermelon pieces on day 4 since the game A: doesn't count the watermelon as a full fruit, and B: doesn't expect you to get a watermelon as your first fruit. the cutscene itself shows the fruit being analysed and then being turned into juice saving the seeds for later. since you collected the first watermelon piece not only did the cutscene not play, but it also just gave you the juice.
as an added note, the strawberry on day one doesn't register as a collected fruit either so maybe it's just hard coded into the game.
The first fruit you acquire in a playthrough automatically triggers a cutscene where the ship juices it. Which is why the first piece didn't show and why there was already juice in the canister
30:34 the real reason they are avoiding the juice is that it turned Brittney into a large green man
I'm really amazed, not just he finished the game with only 7 pieces of fruit, he finished the game in 7 days, something I think I'm not good enough to do. Not satisfied, he them tryed to finish the game with just 3 piece of fruits. He achieved it. Congratulations guy, you are incredible!
Don't diss our academy!
kidding, your videos have been a great way to learn more and more about Pikmin, and great fun too
Been binging your stuff recently and it’s really making me wanna replay all of Pikmin 1-3 again, since I just played 4 last summer
The first watermelon disappeared because when you usually collect fruit for the first time it activates a cutscene which auto juices it so that’s what happened
Found this channel about a week ago and have been binging your challenge videos. (Had no idea just how broken Pikmin 1 and 2 are, dang!)
Though it turned out you didn't need it in the end, I'll just say you don't have to solve squat for the star fruit in Tropical Wilds. You can just lock on to it and charge Winged Pikmin to tear it down. All these years later I still remember that being the first thing I tried on my first playthrough. Only way I've ever gotten it on several runs.
when the meerslug is doing the underground phase, I believe it's possible to charge a large amount of pikmin onto its lips (it might need to be rock pikmin but I'm not sure) and it'll do enough damage to make it fly up into the air before it gets the chance to eat any pikmin.
you can do it with only reds too
14:04 It was the first fruit you collected during the entire play through. Drake.
Is Lemon a fraud? No, he's just plays easier games like Dark Souls. You can't blame him for not being up to real challenges like Pikmin
Amazing video as always, you really went the extra mile with redoing days to get the true lowest fruit!
This is so cool dude! I love how you give credit to any clips you use, and the effort you put into your videos :D
Re: Missing Watermelon
The fruit on the side of the screen are fruit that have not been juiced yet.
I love this rivalry
the star fruit solution is three half pieces of fruit, so 1.5 and the solution you did was 5/6 and 2/10, so one and one thirtieth of a fruit, and is therefore less fruit. but the two watermelon pieces and one star fruit piece is still less since that's 2/6 and 1/2 so it's ultimately 5/6ths of a fruit.
14:18 since it was your first fruit, the game would usually do that cutscene where you juice the strawberry instantly, but since you didn’t get a strawberry, the game freaked out and just didn’t count it and turned into juice.
I love this stupid little rivalry so much, it makes me laugh every time. ♥
The missing watermelon is caused by the cutscene that plays when you get your first fruit, but due to it not being a full fruit the cutscene is skipped
You can complete the entirety of distant tundra within 1 day, it’s honestly not that difficult at all if you split your Pikmin up as much as possible
As a member of the firebomb academy this means war, but as a pikmin content enjoyer the war can wait.
You and kemons little rivalry is really funny. Also i dont know how you guys keep thinking of funky ways to beat pikmin
More vivalry, more fruit- wait... more Pikmin content.
The first fruit usually activates a cutscene usually for the sunseed berry (strawberry) so the game probably juiced it up
the first fruit you get in this game causes a juicing cutscene to start (think the strawberry in the garden of hope) so since it's already been juiced it doesn't appear in the end of day juicing cutscene
Also you probably need to still count that one then bc it does indeed exist
this is a great year for disses
heres my theory for the watermelon thing: the game normaly plays a cutscene when you collect your first fruit so I think that that cutscene was supposed to play for your first part of the watermellon that was collected but it didn't because you weren't meant to collect your first piece of fruit that late into the game so it didn't play the cutscene
Sega reference was actually classic
35:05 do you hear the little Pikmin in the background ? Looks like at press A, they're a capitain having to take care of lousy and cute little creatures IRL as well
I did Formidable Oak in a single day because for some reason I thought I was supposed to.
DUDE SAME???? i didn’t realize until after i’d beaten the game that you absolutely did not need to do it all in one day
Yeah I thought Olimar would be dead if I didn't do it in one go
The first piece of the watermelon didn’t register, but it still counted as juice.
The water Mellon glitch was because you never triggered the cutscene of getting your first fruit which automatically juices it during the day but the watermelon was your first fruit so the game glitched so it automatically juiced it but it did not play the cuttsence
and the bromance continues
It's so funny to me that this challenge basically defeats the whole purpose of Pikmin 3 and dooms the entire population of Koppai
This is a good challenge because even if you lose, your efforts will not be fruitless.
Meeslug tip : when he creates the big pit you can rush your entire squad and he'll pop out before he can swallow any pikmin he eats !
