On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you prefer more up close and personal dogfights consider the IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battle series and experience intense WWII aerial combat over famous battlefields such as Stalingrad, Moscow, Rhineland and Normandy. Fight in and against Russian, American, German, British warbirds such as the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, Bf-109, FW-190, Spitfire, Hurricane and rugged IL-2 Sturmovik attack plane. You can also fly legendary SPADS, Fokkers and Camels in WWI dogfights over the trenches of WWI and discover your inner Red Baron! And all of this can be experienced in jaw dropping virtual reality!

I gotta say, for BVR fights you really should have a Tacview at the end. It really helps with understanding what really happened. For instance, I'm somewhat confused about the missile that hit you, I was really hoping to see it in Tacview.
I guess it was at this Mach 6 or so velocity without engines, so that's why it's that invisible, but you're right with it. It's not at all clear without Tacview

I'm always so impressed by the distances these fights are fought. You have to imagine, the missiles are launched from over 100km to hit a target you can't even see
Yeah imagine driving that far and then imagine a missile going that in like a minute
"beyond visual range" is an understatement
And then, you think that AA missiles travel 4x that distance or more... its crazy how much missile tech has advanced. At the same time, it really makes the world feel a lot smaller.
Not to mention that target is travelling faster than the speed of sound, with counter measures and its rather small as well.

Ending 2021 with a Growling Sidewinder Beyond Visual Range fight, against the Axehead... yeah, that is some kind of perfect! Love ya' kiddo!
The Typhoons new Aesa radar (as recently delivered to Kuwait) has a rotating antenna (which can also be fixed to point in one direction) which allows the pilot to fly side on to the target while still updating target data to the meteor, I imagine this will give a huge tactical advantage.
Not only that, you can actually turn “cold” and still maintain radar lock.
@@jagheterbanan Isn't that the same as "cranking"? What's the difference between the rotating antenna and the usual gimbals on other aircraft?
@@randallsanchez3161 When cranking you’re still flying towards the bandit. With the rotating AESA you can look slightly backwards with it so you can turn more than 90 degrees thus flying away (turning cold) while still maintaining radar lock.

Cold is when you are giving the tail to the Bandit.

Can you do a “Capture the flag” mission with Red and Blue teams, but instead of a flag each team needs to take out the other team’s AWACS and defend their own?

Would be a good time to point out missiles don’t “hit” aircraft they explode near them just like regular old aa fire and flack.. missiles don’t impact airframes they get close and then explode sending shrapnel “flack” into the airframe..

I would've liked to see a tacview for that last fight, it really helps me understand the dynamics of the engagement better. Also I had no idea that the Meteor had that kind of range!

Hi GS, another fantastic video. Thanks for what you broadcast for us, it's the best channel of its sort, and a Happy New Year.
Just one request. Because in BVR combat for most of us viewers it's much less obvious what is happening than in a dogfight, it would help us a lot if you commented on what you think the position of the opposing airplane is and what you think he is doing and also perhaps comment more on the data from the radar and the passive radar receiver. It would help us greatly to understand better what is going on. Also, the BVR combat absolutely necessitates the post-combat analysis you usually do. Your videos are so attractive also because we learn from them a lot and this would be great in this regard.

While just a lowly military rotary wing aviator (civilian fixed wing) I appreciate the known and unknown unknowns. On the GS channel as well as elsewhere I notice civilians and non-pilots in general don't really appreciate these things.
Often we think we know everything yet batch to batch there are always subtill differences. At 30000 feet an AMRAAM that burns just 2 seconds longer or 3 seconds less can ruin someone's day. I've personally seen this with Stingers, TOW-2 & Hellfire down in the dirt. Tolerances exist, these can be the difference between life and death. Tolerance deviation is something a computer simulation doesn't really do.

Hey when you do the BVR fights I’d like to see the TAC view because it’s not very obvious what the bandit is doing like in the dogfight videos. Keep up the great work though man, I love the content.

At max range, after the Axe missile makes contact, sound takes 156 seconds to catch up to the missile.

Euro Fighter is basically a worse Rafale so it's one step closer to the Rafale too being produced by Airbus company

@@chronos1081 What really differentiate them is that the Rafale was made to be polyvalent, the Eurofighter was made in cold war context to be an air superiority only jet having Soviet jets in mind, Rafale despite being the same weight can carry much more weapons and ordnance, can land in Aircraft carriers, do stealthy precision bombing (only aircraft combat proven to do so atm despite F-35 magic disappearing muricans)
@@ommsterlitz1805 I certainly wouldn't say stealthy, the rafale has a slighty bigger RCS than the eurofighter, the rafale can certainly carry more than the Eurofighter, but not a significant amount, especially due to it typically carrying 2-3 droptanks

a hypersonic missile at altitudes below 50,000 shouldn't be maneuverable at all. the amount of drag and resistance would be insane, also I'm pretty sure plasma sheathing would leave the missile blind as well
I dont think it goes hypersonic at such low altitude. It only goes hypersonic in 60km+ away from bandit to close up to the bandit as much as possible before turning the burner off.
Don't you need about 3000K for the plasma to form? I don't think it would reach that high of temp.
Also, if the missile doesn't have thrust vectoring, wouldn't you want as much air as it can handle to go through the control surfaces?
@@s87343jim The amount of heat that can develop from traveling at hypersonic speeds at the altitude normal fighter jets operate at would probably shock you. Look up the X-15, it would easily reach thousands of degrees celsius even at the extremely high altitudes it flew at.
The R-37 doesn't seem to have any sort of heat shielding at all. If I had to guess, its designed to loft itself very very high into low density air where this isn't a problem. Then it will slow down to supersonic speeds once it starts closing in on its target.
@@sevrent2811 "Slow down" to supersonic speeds... That sounds crazy. I'm pretty sure Russians know what they are doing (as they're best in rocket science and they've got cutting edge missiles technology) and, however it works, they made it well enough.

Well, that problem eventually got broken down in many small pieces and solved 😄
that SU-35 was no problem at all, this fight was purely decided by terrain ... you could replace thet SU by literally any plane capable of carrying that radar and missile and the result would have been the same
I wish someday we'll see a good-fidelity model of, at least the newer Su-27 (SM2 and soon SM3) and the 2nd gen. of MiG-29 (M and K). The TVC heavyweights like the Su-30SM2 and the Su-35S would be a little bit overwhelming I guess...

With those super long range, hypersonic missiles, I guess radar warning receivers are close to useless when you are used to defending against AMRAAM or other, usually slower ones. Just when you think you have time to crank and go down into denser air, the missile could be already in your face. I'm also beginning to see the use of low observability; good luck targeting something your radar may not tell you that is out there. Offsetting the OODA-loop (John Boyd) has become trashing it completely.
Hypersonics work like the older AIM-54's. Big engines and heavy so they retain a lot of energy when falling from altitude. However, in denser air they still do poorly and have weird flight performance when trying to go vertical in that dense air causing even more energy loss.

Dude, have you heard about the updates to the Mirage's Super 530s? Could you do some BVR stuff with the Mirage? Maybe fighting Flankers or Tomcats with Fox 1s?
The 530 has had an overhaul and the spec sheet says it can hit Mach 5 launched at Mach 1.8 above 32k ft - been messing with it tonight but can't get TacView to work - the missile has like 10 miles more range at altitude than before the update, but the tracking looks like pure rather than lead pursuit, it might be that they're not tracking at all or that they're going so fast they just can't turn - need someone with a better eye for this stuff to take a look at them, I'm sure they've become a hidden BVR gem that could really catch people with their pants down if they're used correctly.
I sure hope Vlad isn't a subscriber, that first part might be very encouraging to him.

Given the main international competition for fighter purchases, such as in Canada, Finland, and the Philippines, a battle between the F-35 and the JAS 39 Gripen would be epic!

@@karjalasta It's just for entertainment purposes, this channel uses a lot of mods, but yes, the Gripen would be at a disadvantage for not having an E/F-version HMD helmet, and an updated modification will probably still take time..
That would be cool, but I think the video should be one bvr one dogfight because I the gripen would destroy the F 35 in a dogfight and the F 35 would destroy the gripen in a bvr foght
@@jackbubblewater7490 Not necessarily. Actually missiles can be controlled by third parties after launch, so as long as the F35 is being detected and they can lock on it, it can be downed as easily as any other aircraft.
