The man could always sing. He knew his instrument was his voice. He mastered it. Look at how he adjusting the notes to a lower level PERFECTLY. The key changed, but everything else is the same. Genius!!!
It was right about this time that I recorded with Dobie at The Tracking Room in Nashville. Dan Mitchell brought Dobie in to track an absolutely incredible song. RIP to both of those cats.
I remember this song when I was 5 years old and loved it till today in 2023....how time Flys....I've drifted away to so many places and seen so many places in my life....there is alot of good in humanity left.
Still a great voice! So glad he lived to collab with Uncle Kracker and see his song hit the charts again (with a first time number one - on the Adult Contemporary Chart with a record setting 28 weeks)!
Dobie had such a soulful voice and sweetness in his eyes. He was such a handsome and classy gentleman. I always wonder why his music didn’t take him to greater success.
Thanks so much for putting this up. Have been a rusted on fan of this superb singer since first heard Drift Away, so many years' ago. It was simply tragic that the recording business just did not know how to showcase his superb singing talent, beyond maybe 1-3 vinyls. Had the privilege of seeing him live in concert, in Melbourne, Australia. The highlight of the night, July 14, was when he sent the band off the stage. All there was, just Dobie and a single spot illuminating him, He did not need a band with that powerful, soaring voice. He almost lifted the roof off the venue with his rendition of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, a 30-year later version is on TH-cam, just have a look for it. Pity that the signature Les Paul playing intro riff by the late Reggie Young, is not a part of this version. Also, so very sad, that Dobie died with a neglected website, nobody is even sure of his real name, date of death, and more. So much unrecognised talent. Have visited the studio at the original Quadrophonic (now Quad) owned at the time by Norbert Putnam and David Briggs. Could hear Dobie's voice resonating from the past studio walls. Just enjoy as much of this legendary talent's magnificent singing as you are able. He is a vocal treasure.
We need some smart kids to invent a time machine. Bring me back to the 70s. I miss it so much. Mom, Dad, sister, brother...grandma, grandpa, all gone...
I heard a great story that the song was written for Elvis to sing. Dobie was just a demo studio singer. Elvis heard heard it n said Dobie needs to record it, that he did it perfectly. That lauched Dobies career.
Few singers can keep their Wonderful voice through the years . Like as they get older you listen to them and they just don't sound the same Charlie Pride and Dobie Grey are 2 that always sounded like they always did to me.
Great song written by Mentor Williams, brother of Paul Williams, who wrote "We Only Just Begun", "Old-Fashioned Love Song", and "Evergreen" (from A Star is Born, which won him and Barbra Streisand the Oscar for Best Original Song)
R.I.P. Dobie Gray.. Thank you for the awesome music.. ..>"Drift Away" is a song by Mentor Williams (Paul Williams brother), written in 1970 and originally recorded by British singer Mike Berry on his 1972 album Drift Away. A version by John Henry Kurtz was released two months later in November 1972. It was later given to soul singer Dobie Gray for whom it became a surprise international hit. In 1973, the song became Gray's biggest hit, peaking at number five on the US Billboard Hot 100 and receiving a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). I don't think y'all realise how big an anti racism song this is, "Blackman doing a Rock and Roll song like that", this masterpiece still breaking barriers today! Guess we all look to the same power to break free huh!
Great song BUT try Singitlive or HSCC from Adelaide. Australia. A better version all round. I know the fat guy, Stefan, on guitar. That and the singing is a truly great version. BTW Christie McVie of Fleetwood Mac heard their sound through her Australian security, then Mick Fleetwood. After an Australian tour they'll take up residency in Las Vegas ( they won't tour). All great musicicians and singers.
Our generation had the finest of music, cars, hair and way of life❤❤❤❤
50 some years later and it's still a great song. Thank you Dobie.
You don't hear singers like this anymore. Takes me back to my youth. And what a fine, fine man. May he Rest in Peace.
No doubt in my mind the greatest American singer of Rock , Blues , and Country that i have ever heard. Rest In Peace . Dobie.
No one sings this song like Dobie. Great voice & a great performer. RIP Dobie.
Take me back to the seventies when life was good.
Everyone in the audience as well as all of us watching on TH-cam were all singing along, too. 🎉
The man could always sing. He knew his instrument was his voice. He mastered it. Look at how he adjusting the notes to a lower level PERFECTLY. The key changed, but everything else is the same. Genius!!!
Takes me back to my youth! Loved this song! Written by songwriter Mentor Williams, Paul Williams brother. Great!

Wickid, wickid, wickid tune no matter place or time. Love you, Dobie. SIP
I heard a great story that the song was written for Elvis to sing. Dobie was just a demo studio singer. Elvis heard heard it n said Dobie needs to record it, that he did it perfectly. That lauched Dobies career.

2024 and singing along with this classic.
Whatever happened to this kind of music they was actually talent and and knew how to sing
Few singers can keep their Wonderful voice through the years . Like as they get older you listen to them and they just don't sound the same Charlie Pride and Dobie Grey are 2 that always sounded like they always did to me.
Wow, he really got good as a singer. His voice was always superb but he added a smoothness here. Nice phase shift on the guitar.
Great song written by Mentor Williams, brother of Paul Williams, who wrote "We Only Just Begun", "Old-Fashioned Love Song", and "Evergreen" (from A Star is Born, which won him and Barbra Streisand the Oscar for Best Original Song)
Absolute fucking class!

Lawrence party
Not much of a change
Great song BUT try Singitlive or HSCC from Adelaide. Australia. A better version all round. I know the fat guy, Stefan, on guitar. That and the singing is a truly great version. Didn't know Samuel L Jackson had such a good voice
