it is only on rediscovery that we can see the movie Star as classic that as it is some of julie andrews best work. when it was released it suffered from a lousy movie poster and poor marketing and timing. when the film failed at the box office it was edited and ruined. This was my step grandmother. I’m the daughter of Elizabeth Emma boyd and my grandfather Richard Aldrich was Gertrude Lawrence previous husband before she died. I’m just learning now about my family history and who Gertrude really was. Is there a way for me to watch “star!”? It’s a movie about her and my grandfather. Or information about her would be appreciated. My mom was humble about her upbringing and I had no idea about the impact she had. I was a ballet dancer all throughout my life and never understood why I was the only one in my family who danced but now I feel I have more answers.
This is like a movie within a movie. As far as overall plot goes the song doesn’t move the story along , other than to show Gertrude Lawrence had another hit. But the costumes, orchestration, cinematography, choreography and performances are suburb. Times have changed and maybe this is old fashioned. But from what I’ve seen of today’s musicals, Hollywood could never come close to recreating all the elements that went into this number. The talent isn’t there.
As a clueless teenager in the San Fernando Valley in the 60's, I had a HUGE crush on Don Crichton and didn't even understand what that meant. Still do. I saw him once in a grocery store in Studio City in the 90's and was too shy to talk to him and tell him how much I enjoyed his dancing. As is apparent here, he acted while he was dancing and his ability to create a unique personality, even as a chorus boy, was charming. A friend who was also a chorus dancer told me I should have said hello to him, that he's very nice and would have appreciated the compliment. Sigh... a missed opportunity.
It's a very interesting film, but it has no pacing. I think they were trying to do for Julie Andrews what Funny Girl did for Barbra Streisand. Lawrence and Fannie Brice were of the same generation, (and in a way, so were Andrews and Streisand) so I think that was the logic there. Plus Julie was at this point the biggest female film star in the world after Mary Poppins and Sound of Music, so it's understandable to see the studio's logic.
My family went to see them on consecutive days. We certainly liked Funny girl but considered this to be the superior film. I still feel the same way. I think audiences didn't want such a serious story or to see Julie play a flawed, complex character.
As well, (sorry, I talk a lot, LOL) it had Robert Wise as the director (who directed the S of M), so they probably figured the film was foolproof. The problem I think was twofold; Lawrence wasn't a particularly likeable character, and was really, a rather narcissistic flake, who could be very loveable, but drove people nuts. Julie Andrews exudes extreme common sense, and in that, she's quite miscast. I think it was just too much, and wasn't really edited that well. It's a kind of shapeless film.
The best musical Julie ever made with some of the best choreography from Michael Kidd .

Wonderfully directed, edited, acted. The best part of the movie and one of the best things Robert Wise had ever done.
This has always been my favorite scene/song next to My Ship. Its just so beautiful and deep and the choreography is magical. Simply perfect.

The musical numbers in "Star!" are fabulous, albeit a bit overproduced. The rest of the movie sux ass.
