Julie Andrews performs this number sensationally. It is an absolute masterclass. God knows how many takes the hat to foot took but it was well worth it. She really is a marvellous performer.....and, although the film wasn't a great success....I LOVE IT.
When Julie performed this song again on her television variety show, *The Julie Andrews Hour,* in the 1970s, afterward, she showed out-takes of the "hat to foot" trick.
Julie appeared with Ella Shields, a male impersonator, who made this her signature song, at a Command performance in the late 1940s. Some consider that Andrew's may have been influenced by Shields in her performance in Victor/Victoria.
Her use of the props: hat, umbrella, cigar and lighter are fantastic. The sort of thing Fred Astaire made look so easy. It must have taken a hell of a lot of practice!
Julie is referring to Lady Diana Cooper, Viscountess Norwich (née Lady Diana Manners who died in 1986), who was a very prominent socialite figure in London for many years.
Although Julie is a legend, it is touching to think that as a child she also was star-struck when she saw Ella Shields perform. Ella, born in Baltimore, USA, had done a "reverse Julie" - married an Englishman and performed on the British music hall stage. Her most famous act was Burlington Bertie from Bow which first saw the light of day in 1915, a song written by her husband. Julie and Ella even appeared on the same bill in the 1940s! (At the 1948 Royal Command Performance, where Julie sang the anthem at the end as seen on TH-cam). As well as in Star! Julie performed it in her TV series and concerts, she just loved the number.
Thank you so much for this fantastic knowledge, Chris! I had thought this originally was done by the great Vesta Tilly in English Musical Hall. I did this number - All over the stage !! 😮 … Replete w/ props… 2001 in Philadelphia… The stinking umbrella 😂 … I had gotten a guy to fashion it, to open up to the Brit. Union Jack - from a magic store - as best he could. Ugh.- lol😂 But the hecking thing opened up early on in the number… Lol… Prompting my mother, in the opening night audience, right smack in the middle of the house, too - loudly exclaimed: “O, GAWD !!!” Lol !! ❤. Anyway, for so many years, I have intended to get that choreography back into my body… Assemble all the props again - I still have that tuxedo jacket with all the pockets… & get it filmed. ❤ Julie Andrews forever ❤v!!!! And the memory of all those brilliant, fantastic Music Hall artists who preceded her! ❤❤🎉. PS: sorry such a verbosity! 😉. Everyone stay safe and well! 😘 🎭
@@virghammer1 - confusion arises because there was a song entitled just 'Burlington Bertie', written in 1900 and indeed sung by Vesta Tilley. 'Burlington Bertie from Bow' was a parody of that original, from 1915 and sung by Ella Shields. Different songs, different lyrics but both sung by female artistes in male attire. The 'Bow' singer is more down on 'his' luck compared to the Vesta Tilley song. :)
Julie Andrews has always maintained that ‘Burlington Bertie’ was the hardest number to perform in STAR! One would think it would have been ‘The Saga of Jenny’ where virtually all the stunts had to be performed by Julie, but according to her, no. It might have something to do with the fact that throughout the number she is the only one on stage.
A brilliant performance. Having watched it a number of times I notice a number of things disappear. The cigar at the beginning. The gloves inside the hat which do not fall out again and the banana skin at the end.
I remember in my primary school put on a concert the whole school performed in my class we performed songs like Burlington Bertie, Ain't She Sweet, There were Rats, Rats as Big as Blooming Cats. The concert was a huge success and I loved it we had such great fun rehearsing as I remember.
STAR! A Big 70mm Todd AO 6 Track Stereo Production from 20th Century Fox followed the success of "Sound Of Music" but flopped at the box office, such a shame in 1968 the public were not really interested in a biopic of the great music hall star Gertrude Lawrence. Time has been good STAR! it is now a cult film about the great days of music hall and a super performance from Dame Julie Andrews do try and catch it or get the DVD lots of fantastic extras including a running commentary from the great director Robert Wise who gave the world The Sound Of Music! They don't make them like this anymore FANTASTIC!
Have a look at the more low key and subtle original by the American Ella Shields. My Dad accompanied her on piano at the Sydney Tivoli in the 30s and 40 s, and at one stage she invited him to go and play for her at London’s Savoy Hotel. My parents both claimed she was the epitome of perfection. She was also, like Al Jolson, an “ artist’s artist”, always keenly interested in her own music and performances. She became ill during a last performance of Bertie, never regaining consciousness, and died a couple of weeks later. She was a true vaudevillian.
I loved this cute sing since Mother Wore Tights. The lyrics though are rather lengthy if looking them up. Lady Diana remained a sort of mystery conclusivly
The Smith was not F.E.Smith, Lord Birkenhead, but W.H.Smith II, of the famous British newsagents & stationery shops. A famous politician in the 1870s/80s, the song "Ruler of the Queen`s Navee" in "H.M.S. Pinafore" by Gilbert & Sullivan was a nod to Smith`s time as First Lord of the Admiralty.
‘You can’t do it Gertie!’ / ‘Oh YES I CAN!’ (And oh yes she could! ) What a delight of clear effective choreography. I’d love to know how many takes that took!
Nothing to add! A good print in TechniColor and Stereophonic sound but a rather too small screen, but a masterpiece no doubt. Merci beaucoup! Emmanuel from Paris
“The Americanization of Emily” (1964) is a superb pic she did early in her career. Doesn’t get enough attention; she is amazing in the role of Emily. Saw it as a teen and remember it to this day. It’s a dark comedy with James Garner as the romantic lead set during WW2. Very different than “Mary Poppins” or “Sound of Music” and highlights Julie Andrews’s incredible range as an actress. A must see for Julie Andrews fans. When I saw it, the movie was in black and white. Don’t know if it’s colorized now. Here’s a brief clip. My thanks to the TH-cam site that first made the clip public. They deserve the credit for posting. Please give them a thumbs up! th-cam.com/video/kuSBTMk1hKM/w-d-xo.html
Genius well a few questions one what happened to the banana peel and how did she lean over so dramatically! Great Staging and Performance..I'd say the producers, Directors, stage Hands etc. had a lot to do with the safe executions of these magical hilariously comical events, a feast for sore eyes (and ears)
I always find both 'Star!' and 'Funny Girl' such anomalies where you have two actresses who are actually far more talented than the stars they are playing. Granted, I never saw Fanny Brice nor Gertrude Lawrence in performance (one can only imagine they were probably, in the style of their time, quite fantastic), but Andrews and Streisand are/were such megastars they almost deserve musicals of their own.
Star! What we would now call a biopic of Gertrude Lawrence. Daniel Massey's wonderful performance as Noel Coward )seen here at 4:01) is ever bit as wonderful as Julie's ...
Thank you for your response. I will get a DVD. Julie has always been one of my favorites. It was a scandal that Jack Warner kept her out of My Fair Lady
michael harrington her amazing movie STAR that didn't do too well bcoz ppl were so focused on her roles in movies the SOM & MP that she did made iconic. This movie proves her versatility & talent it's so sad ppl failed to appreciate @ that point in time! Now am trying to get it on Amazon it's no longer available!

Julie rockin this performance she’s managed to outdo the original! What a world class artist, Julie Andrews is!
She's my idol. I'm obsessed!!! Julie!!!
Her use of the props: hat, umbrella, cigar and lighter are fantastic. The sort of thing Fred Astaire made look so easy. It must have taken a hell of a lot of practice!
I thought of Chaplin.
'Burlington Burtie from Bow' was the inspiration for 'We're A Couple of Swells' sung and danced to by Astaire and Judy Garland in 'Easter Parade.'
Not her rendition of it, obviously. Who did perform it originally ?
See it once a week!
This is a great movie, in my opinion!
Julie Andrews is awesome!
One of a kind!
Marvelous!
Marvelous!!This movie proves Julie is a genius! ILY Julie Andrews!
Puts her on the creme de la creme of performers!
Brilliant she was a very good actress thanks for this
Julie is referring to Lady Diana Cooper, Viscountess Norwich (née Lady Diana Manners who died in 1986), who was a very prominent socialite figure in London for many years.
I listen to this everyday julie andrews is a great singer great song and great work!
Brilliant like no other! I love you Julie
Top of the top! What fantabulousness!!!!!!! / Can't help idling on the mention of LADY DIANA.
Referencing Lady Diana Cooper, nee Manners.
One of my top faves of Julie's performances on STAR! Perfect in every way! ILY Julie!

Such talent always makes me very emotional
Julie always at the real rendez-vous! She's a great STAR. Emmanuel from Paris
Endless talent, and having to deal with all the props too--amazing as always. So one of a kind
Dame Julie ROCKS!!!
Thanks for putting this up - it made my mum smile :)
Julie Andrews is a STAR!
Best version! Timeless & epic performance by Julie!!!
She’s unbeatable. Truly unbelievable!

one word.......perfect
Impecable!

That is a great number, with some great "business": must have taken a lot of rehearsal...
So pleased I have found this. Love it and plan to sing it and dance anywhere there is space to. Thanks for the up-load.
I've never seen Julie Andrews play a pregnant part, it looks good on her!
she played a pregnant part in Hawaii (1966) and her child birth scene is absolutely brilliant , you should check that out...
She is a genius.
Absolute banger!
brilliant.
Thank you.That's nice of you.
damn this is fireee! 🔥

Is this from "Star!" (the Gertrude Lawrence biopic)?
Yes it is from Star!
Genius well a few questions one what happened to the banana peel and how did she lean over so dramatically! HEADSUPBERKELEY She didn’t settle till she perfected the whole number to the most minute detail! Julie is not practically perfect she is perfect!!!!
Fun fact, both this song, and julie andrews, would appear on the original Muppet Show.

She's a rockstar
Does this resemble "The Good Old Days" TV program on the BBC?
Bloody 'ell - 'ow did she that?
What movie is this from??
what film is this please?
No one was better than Julie Andrews she should have played Eliza in My Fair Lady instead of Audrey Hepburn
Is "Smith" F.E.Smith, Lord Birkenhead?
The captions tho xD
what is this from. is it choreographed by michael kidd?
Julie Andrews actually saw Ella Shields perform this song.
Anyone here from UC in 2019?
What is the movie?

I just had a banana with Lady Diana? Did she just say that right at the end?
Yes, but that was a reference to Lady Diana Cooper, a british socialite from the thrities.
DayDreamBeliever1961 I’ve been wondering Time traveler?
Pip pip
Tin Man! 3:18
3:33 when they ask me to die and I say no I just had a banana me: WHEN THEY ASK ME TO DIE AND I SAY NO I NEED SOME MILK PLSS LIKE IF U THINK THAT PART WAS FUNNY
It's "when they ask me to dine, I say no", not "die".
I prefer Betty Grable' s version! Now that was a Dame!
I went to watch it and was very dissapointed. Julie's performance is much more impressive
love the song and the performance is exquisite!! aah the great Julie Andrews!!
