  • They might be earmarked as future kings of the jungle, but young male lions are lazy and lack survival skills. Their only hope is to attract a female to come in and provide for them.

This is true, male lions do need females to survive, but females also need the males to survive. The females hunt and take care of their young, while the male(s) usually guard and imprint their territory.

On an individual level, male lions do NOT need lionesses to survive - they need lionesses to procreate (and vice-versa). Lionesses DO need male lions to survive, otherwise they would just be a much smaller Big Cat competing with the mighty male lion for food. They would lose their kills every time a male lion was near. In fact, male lions would start hunting them to eliminate competition - the same way lions kill leopards and cheetahs when possible. If the lionesses didn't have a pride leader in a male, all the cubs would be constantly killed by male lions in the area.

Tomi Adewole this is factually incorrect. female lions are much more adept at hunting prey than males, do to their lighter size and greater agility. a single male could take down larger prey than a single female, but the chances of him catching anything are much lower than that of a female.

    • @opalleaves6694

Perplexed Sage Most often young males actually scavenge for food, chasing hyenas off kills and such. Lions actually scavenge more than hyenas, and this plays a large role in that fact. They of course soon learn to better hunt, but there is a reason males risk their lives to join a pride, and that is (not only to sire cubs) but to have a pride of lionesses to hunt for them. Both males and females can survive on their own, but they won’t thrive on their own. Males can’t hunt as well as females, and females need males to protect their offspring.

Lions can't survive without lioness hence when they take over the pride, they only kill Lions in the prides and not the Lioness. Even Lions only chase away their sons out of the pride but not the daughters. They need lioness for a survival.

I mean it makes sense. The males are never taught to hunt -- they are driven out of the pride when they come of age. The females stay together and teach the young ones to hunt, from generation to generation. The males simply provide the brute strength to defend the pride from rival males.

    • @0doublezero0
      @0doublezero0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +74

Why does it make sense exactly? The males are ousted at a young age and are pretty much expected to survive on their own. They do this for a few years with zero help, unless they form a male coalition of lions. In other words, like you have inferred, they have to figure out how to hunt for themselves. So why do we think they can't hunt or are lazy? When they do form a pride, they are still hunting (not a much) and having to patrol their territory (up to 20 miles) to fend off other animals and males. If any thing, we think that males are useless. So if anything instead of this feminist narrative, we need to learn more about the brutality of life that male lions go through.

Not so much different, parents protect their offspring in all species. Baby Humans need both mom and dad to fully develop, ( psychology talks about all the benefits) no matter how they try to portray single parenting as a new trend we should all hop on. Children need both parents. In lions, a pride where both male and female work together, and both provide their greater strenghs, can be said, is similar to human partnerships with both man and woman in a home: both provide their strenghs too, when its a healthy relationship ofcourse.

Male lions have the toughest life on earth. If they have not been killed as a cub they will get expelled when they can still barely hunt. They will eventually have to kill or be killed to get a pride, then at an old age they will either die fighting other male lions or get expelled from the pride and die as an aged lion, malnourished, and alone. We only see the peak moments of a male lion's life. Some may hate them but their life story are tougher than of the lioness

I'm a month late but I'm going to clear this up: I haven't seen the entire documentary, but I will tell you all this much. Lions were hunted to extinction in Rwanda, as the narrator obviously states, many years ago. Rwanda has gone through quite a lot of strife in the past. Now, to all of the lions in this pride, this is completely foreign territory. These males are likely about 3-4 years old based on mane length and darkness, meaning they're still rather young to be taking over a pride as just a pair. Male lions don't typically claim a pride until about five years of age, even if in a pair or coalition. By then, their manes are usually much longer and darker.
Younger males tend to form larger coalitions if they can. Over the years, incidences with other males, rival predators, prey, and humans determine how many are left before they claim a pride. The very largest coalitions are only made up of five or six male lions, two or a single male is the norm by the age of six and certainly by the time the male grows old at about fifteen years.
I think the implication with these two males is that they're young and in unknown territory. Males are capable of hunting but these two are at an age where it's rather crucial to find females. Since they're not in a larger coalition with the strength of numbers or older, stronger males to help them, they can't possibly hope to hunt buffalo or other larger, slower prey. But since they're at the same time growing larger and slower than the females, and their manes are starting to darken, they cannot sneak up on or catch the smaller antelope they'd prefer. They can make an attempt, but male lions without females to help suffer more failed hunts because of the differences in their anatomy.
The point is that, this reintroduction project hinges on the females providing for these males as they do in functioning populations. These males are only going to get bigger and stand out more, and at that point the females will be pivotal to their survival. Furthermore, and keeping in mind I'm not entirely aware of Rwanda's ecological strife, these males may not be able to rely on carrion. There's likely not much to find, or they don't have a chance of driving other scavengers away.

Unsurprisingly, we humans really don't know shit, but we place our own values on animals like we know something and it becomes "fact." Also, this misleading title really doesn't help.

This video is greatly misleading, the title was purely intended to create a call to action. Male lions are very able hunters if needed, however most hunting grounds are already acquired by existing prides and of course males. It is very risky for them to expend great energy during a hunt only to have the high potential possibility of coalitions or males within whichever territory to then initiate attacks catching them off guard and exhausted. So to avoid that, they will often scavenge or steal food from other predators if possible, only hunting if they are driven to do so. However they often lack the speed, sustenance and agility that lionesses provide, with their less bulkier bodies, more adapted to stealthily melting into the terrain to stalk out prey, as opposed to a thick heavy mane retaining heat as well as sticking out like a sore thumb. So while they are actually quite abled hunters, in the long run it isn’t too feasible, not to mention their instinct is heavily ingrained on procreating their bloodline and claiming territories once they have left their natal prides. It is also worthy to understand that we only see a good documented 30% of what actually happens in lion society, I’m more aware of this now studying zoology, in particular big cats, before this I was conditioned to believe whatever was documented on tv or videos. I’m merely one opinion based on knowledge I’ve acquired from those directly in the field, if you wish to gain a stronger understanding, I absolutely urge you to seek out feasible sources working in the field or even through social media pages where a lot of them are open to answering tough questions.

tail feather Most male lions die without a pride because it is so hard for them to get food. They are bigger, slower, and they stand out a lot more than females do. Male lions yes, can hunt on their own, but it is very rare for a male lion or even two to survive by themselves on hunting alone. Most male lions are scavengers and bully other predators off kills before finding and taking over a pride, and if they don‘t find a pride they will die.
It’s one of the ways nature balances the world, in a very cruel way of course, but you can‘t change what has a purpose.

It is a bit annoying when people come along and say the male lion is lazy and does nothing because he sleeps during the day. The male is mostly nocturnal because hyenas are mostly nocturnal and he’s warding them off during the night fighting off entire clans sometimes getting his face ripped apart. They are always covered in scars and he’s certainly entitled to his share of what the females hunt his job is simply harder gazelles don’t fight back.

Notoriously lazy? Male lions walks for miles and miles each day securing their territories.
They fight off any intruder, from other males(at times multiple males) to any other predator, even whole packs of hyenas.
I think the least the females can do is hunt every few days. Their 'society' works out well for both the lion and lioness. Even though a male can hunt on his own, his mane etc make him stand out more and he might be less successful, so he needs the females to help. They're small, blend in better, don't have huge manes or a dominating scent or presence. Where as on the flip side, the females also need the males for survival. Without the male there, the females would constantly lose their catch to hyenas and other predators, as they would rather attack a pride of lionesses than a single male.
That's how they evolved. They need each other.

  • @lemonadestandnexttomyhouse307

Since the video has nothing to do with the title here’s why male lions need females to survive:
First off, they both need each other, neither are useless.
Females hunt for the pride to survive, take care of Cubs, and help other lionesses with cubs.
Males protect the pride, mates, and cubs. Sometimes they help with hunts.
They both teach their cubs how to survive and hunt, and cubs also wrestle each other to learn how to fight.
Males often fight more for mates or to join a pride, but it doesn’t mean that females don’t. Sometimes it’s a whole pride vs another pride.
for people arguing who is stronger:
Lions female and male are strong animals and you shouldn’t mess with them but, males are stronger than most females, it’s just nature and it isn’t because they are males, it’s because what they are built for and what they do. Females hunt, males have more fights, which is why they have manes. Think about it, females mostly stay in the pride they are born in, males are kicked out, so most of the time they have to fight to join a pride. If you have common sense you would understand
This is not my opinion this is only facts and nature

Not true. They need each other to reproduce, but two dudes can go gay, and two chicks can go lez.

Stephen Putnick they hunt but not as good as loinesses because of their mane and weight. Lionesses are faster and have more stamina

They hunt to survive before they can lead a herd, after that all changes, their work is to defend the herd, hunting is demanded to lionesses. Btw a lion is a great hunter, lionesses work together, the lion kills alone and failing is not a chance...
