Fixing the Tin Can Effect: Restomod Willys Wagon Roof Dent Repair

- Old sheet metal is notorious for that "Tin Can" effect where it becomes weak and flimsy. The roof of this 1950 Willys Wagon was no different. Years of life as a California surf wagon left the roof littered with dents and dings that we had to remove to restore the old sheet metal to its original condition.

To perform this process on my wagon, I cut the roof braces out for full access to the roof metal. There were 37 dents/dings/ripples when I started and zero when I finished. Then the braces were welded back in. No need to use a wire brush handle!
That's amazing to see something that badly oil canned come back to it's original shape like that! Many hours of experience required for this! Master craftsman!❤🙂

We had four of the Jeep/Willy's contemporary pickup truck versions of this wagon at the ranch in Montana when I was growing up. They were small, couldn't carry much, but they would scare you where they'd go if you needed to go way back to pick up an elk.
Awsome Work. I made the mistake of over working the sheetmetal on my roof (with a portable pneumatic Planishing hammer) and created an excess of material, that took a lot of work to correct.
What frame is it on?
The customer had already boxed in the original frame himself and did a wonderful job!
But worth it.
