A lot of people have been asking for an A/C update video HERE IT IS! th-cam.com/video/hfzCQJNozBc/w-d-xo.html
You could have shown the ac unit and how to install and hook it up instead of just talking about it.
Literally the reason why I clicked the video 😂
I had the same interest.
The eBay link in the description shows the parts.
Looking at it you are going to have a condenser/fan unit that typically is mounted in front of the radiator of modern cars. (It can go anywhere that gets outside airflow.)
The evaporator coil and blower fan box to be mounted somewhere in the cabin.
The compressor pump needs to be mounted somewhere convenient to reach the evaporator coil, condenser coil, and power.
Refrigerant hoses between all three.
Power to the compressor and evaporator box. Control wires between everything. Power wires are going to be beefy for a 12v pump. 600watt pump will be pulling 50A.
Controls in the cabin. I don't see them pictured in the kit. Do you have to fabricate your own? It can be as simple as a set of rocker switches (very cool aesthetic) or as complicated as an automatic thermostat control for the pump and fans. (not that bad to buy/make).
You'll need a vacuum pump and some gauges to test the system for leaks, pull a vacuum, and then charge it with refrigerant.
oh man, electric AC. That's gonna be a great solution for my integra when the time comes to overhaul it. With plans to turbo it, packaging an ac compressor is rough, but with an electric system I can mount it pretty much anywhere. Definitely looking forwards to seeing updates on how well it works
Please do an update on the ac setup. I'm wondering how it performs compared to the regular setup with a decent size cab. Great content as always 👍
Definitely we are going to be putting it to the test on power tour so we will have updates
@@Rustomod Definitely looking to an Update...
Hahah I’ve just started looking into electric a/c and was only finding expensive kits meant for air cooled Porsche.
Glad to see you guys beat me to it 👍
Yeah works great! Definitely recommend
Thanks for the info on the 12 volt a/c and electric steering. I have a Cummings 3.3 XJ project to complete and was trying to figure those things out. Nice project.
Thanks!
My friend built a 61 in 1978. He cut the front gasket halves off a parts car for the rear seat windows and had a glass guy put a single pane in that location. Less water infiltration that way. Small block Chevy and a turbo 350, stock axles. Nice build, sold to a guy in Florida. Maroon with white side insert.
Regarding the "bigger alternator vs another battery" issue. A battery is not an energy source, it's just temporary storage and will not fix a "lack of energy" problem... only a higher Amperage alternator will do that. A battery can help keep the compressor running while parked. (if the alternator is spinning too slow) but only for a few minutes.
dont tell tesla owners that...
@@DieselRamcharger Tesla owners know, that's why they plug in the car - to connect it to the Source of energy, and fill up the energy storage device under the car.
@@beforebefore nah they dont know.
thank you. came to say the same. Batteries only store power, they should swap alternator for high amperage , low rpm unit. I have custom 320a alternators and 130ah 30c lithium batteries in both of my vehicles.. mo' powa!
@@DrDerekG73 just run the ac off teh engine and stop wasting all that energy converting from one source to another. all the heat your alternators, batteries, cabling etc creates is lost efficiency.
It's great having another battery but you're going to NEED a much larger alternator. I assume you're going to have the PS pump running all the time. That's probably, I'm guessing, 20 or 30amps. The AC compressor is going to be a power hog. That's the reason no OEM's run electric AC on non hybrid or electric vehicles. I'd guess on a hot day that compressor will pull 60 to 100 amps. Not only will you need a big alternator but you'll need a big wire kit for it as it will be producing a lot of amperage.
This is a fantastic project! I just found you guys and look forward to seeing how it goes.
I was curious about the power draw of this AC system so I sent them a message. Yep, their system pulls 1100W. That works out at just under 100amps. You'll need at least a 150 or better yet 200amp alternator to keep your system charged no matter how many batteries you have. Alternators are not rated for their continuous output. They are in fact quite inefficient and will overheat if made to work at 100% duty cycle.
Sorry if you already knew all of this and have considered it but I wanted to say something.
Good luck!!
@@billbayer5526 270a low rpm Singer unit would be perfect.
I had always wondered if anyone had ever done A/C powered by electric motor and you are the first ones to accomplish that, that I know of... I was trying to figure out a way to put A/C in a bug without putting the compressor on the engine... Well another great video and you guys are very close to checking this one off your list.. looking forward to seeing this one done.. See you next Friday...
Yeah we haven’t seen it before either until this kit works very well would be great on a vw
Tesla has non engine driven compressor. Most diesel trucks have dc electric compressors for their sleepers. My camper has a dc a/c system as well…
All EVs and the Prius and Volt use electric AC compressors.
Not 12 volts@@captainobvious9188
You don't need ac. Just roll the windows down.
What you DO NEED however is heat.
You definitely can't live without heat!
Love your work, Chris (Pratt) 👍
Okay I'm in the process of converting an ambulance into a mobile shop. So sometimes I'll be able to plug in. I wanted to use the factory AC without the motor running, and this is exactly what I was looking for. I thought this was going to be way complicated with 2 separate pumps, this is way easier.
Cool!
Un grand RESPECT à tous ces PASSIONNÉS..
🙏😍
Yup I used to camp out with my Nissan Leaf they have these AC/heat pumps that run all night with little power. If you want a cheap power source check out hybrid batteries theyre 100-250 a piece and will run 12v
Professionally done!
Alternator now takes the load as opposed to the belt driven compressor. Energy has to come from somewhere!
Most important thing is how reliable and long term life the AC compressor life is. No good if it only lasts for a little bit. Factory fitted systems last for years and years in most cars and trucks.
Your replay had no content . Of of thr words used. A comment. That can no read or comment
What a great video
Nice work!
I’ve got a 90’ barn door suburban I’m looking to upgrade the AC on. My thinking is it’d be a huge upgrade doing this for the rear AC and get a sanden upgrade compressor and condenser for the front.
Good job👍👍👍
I've been running electric AC in my 1988 Kenworth cabover for over 8 years with no issue.🚚🚛🇺🇸🇺🇸
Awesome!!
Great! Make a video showing HOW it was installed because people are coming to this video because of the title yet there is no HOW in How we used electric AC.
@@davidrowe5822Just block the channel. I hate when people waste my time
I drove one of those when i learned to drive, low first gear was 5 miles an hour.
Instead of the Mini pump, why not go with a column mounted fully electric steering system, either a kit or from a pick-a-part?
We didn’t have the room for an electric column we actually have one but it’s too big
Very cool build!
Thanks!
Cool thing with a purely electric solution is you could add some batteries and solar/wall plug and have something that has some flexibility when the motor is off.
I've seen many of those A/C hanging out of home made pick up topper campers.
The only thing bad about electric air conditioning on a 12-volt system it's a 12-volt system amperage is quite high you need a really big alternator.
pretty cool stuff. wonder if you could make it so it's shore power like an RV to top off batteries and run the A/C lol ...well i guess if you could it would make sleeping in it easier lol
Quality of enjoyment improvement

@@thomaswoitekaitis8977 motor comes from he 1500s and meant to impart motion. Replace the word motor with motion in all your examples and see if it makes sense.
Just because people started using the word incorrectly out of ignorance and now over the last 120 years has become accepted as a synonym for engine doesn’t mean those of us who are knowledgeable or do things like this need to continue to enable that ignorance. Engines are combustion. Motors are electric. Also a reason we don’t say electric engines because well engines as stated are combustion and motors are electric.

You see my point? Language matters. Yes maybe engine/motor doesn’t have the consequences of my above examples but as a society we allow ignorance of many to be used by few to manipulate and it can have devastating consequences. But why should we keep saying motor and teaching it to the youth coming behind us.
FYI the O-Rings in the shark bite fittings may not be happy with freon in the long-term
The shark bite fittings are for the heater core
I'm really curious if that electric power steering unit could also power a hydroboost brake booster?? If so that would be really tricky for my 90 Big Block Foxbody!!
I think that would work fine
It kinda looks like you put the motor mount where the air conditioner should go. Unless the front driveshaft is articulating through that whole area.
Yeah the front drive shaft would hit it
Iv got a 37 ford ..it's a chevy chassis and running gear ...I'm trying to think and figure about an ac unit for it ..I'm thinking of a Amazon unit ..electric unit lines the condenser and the fan and also the under Dash unit ....but what about a dryer I don't know anything about ac really ..I used to rebuild air compressors and keep them from leaking down and tune the switch and all
Definitely looking into this now. What are you using ti control the fan speed and cool/heat controls?
Yeah it controls everything pretty neat unit comes with knobs and everything to control climate
@@Rustomod thanks for the heads up
50 degrees is as cold as it gets??
hi do you need ac pressure switch to turn off/on the ac compressor like OEM ones?
Yes
how does the steering work if it loses power? in other words can you steer it manually ok? i know from experience that when i lost power on my truck at 50 mph i was barely able to get it to the side of the road. much, much harder than just standard manual steering. just a thought and love the project. big old willys fan here and grew up driving them.
It’s not bad at all without power steering honestly the tires arnt huge so that helps
Class B vans have the ability to use 12V rooftop air conditioning units.
where was the heavy duty alternator?
any updates on how ac worked out and how big of alternator do you use. just looking for update
Check out the latest episode of the Willy’s we swap the engine and actually delete the electric power steering but this allows the electric ac to work much better
There's a guy running an electric Studebaker and used a Prius electric a/c compressor for his air conditioning.
I was wondering about the Prius compressor
I see you guys added stainless steel hoses for the A/C. Did you video this or have the parts list for it.
It came with the kit
How many amps does that AC compressor pull?
Im looking at one of these for our Drag & Drive truck.
Does it cool fairly well?
Quite a bit running the electric power steering with the electric ac is too much for it unfortunately but if you run one or the other you should be fine
Just put a rooftop HVAC unit, like on top of RV trailers it look Racey 😅😅😅
Haha
I'd like to see someone put a refrigerated semi trailer diesel engine in a small truck or something.
these people won the lot'tree.
what kind of controls comes with the AC kit? I don't see what turns it on or selects temp
It has some basic knobs but we changed them out to fit the Willy’s dash we made
The 2004+ prius has an electric a/c unit, but it doesnt run on 12v dc, so it is more complicated to run it (but some have).
The 2008 ish volvo's have 12v electric power steering pump, it is bigger than the unit you show but it includes the reservoir.
I'm putting my 53 Willys Panel on a 2-door explorer chassis and powering it with a 3.0 v6 from a jaguar s-type (duratec 240hp).
I also have a 47 willys truck cab going on a 5.0 explorer chassis awd, although it sits up like a truck and now I'm thinking to make it low slung hotrod/ratrod, the explorer chassis won't work for that.
What are you doing for defrost?? I was trying to use the explorer firewall/dash air handling but the willys is so different it won't work.
The electric AC unit has a placement for a defrost duct we routed it to the stock willys defrost vents. We were debating on using the volvo pump and the mini cooper pump the mini we could mount easily so we did that and it works fantastic!
Been working in the prius for years.
I purchased the same electric AC kit you did. Did yours come with a drier and expansion valve? Mine didn't.
Ours was mounted on the side on the condenser
@@Rustomod there's nothing with mine. Not sure if I should add one or something
Question about the electric a/c compressor. I have a 1994 ford ranger that is currently undergoing an engine swap, and I am unable to fit a compressor due to clearance issues. So I searched to see if there is such a thing as electric a/c compressor and came across this video. So how is your a/c system holding up nowadays? (Assuming you still have this rig?)
Yeah it works good we did have to get rid of the electric power steering
@Rustomod Awesome! So I'll go with that exact compressor then. Thank you. (Liked the video too, btw.)
Hello i found your channel and video. The 12volt ac unit . I have looking at a kit on ebay . So you used shark bite and copper tubing for the pressure lines ?? I want to put a kit on a 88 yj
Yep that’s what we did
@@Rustomod thanks for the response. Is it still working well
You need bigger alternator not battery.get one from ambulace.

AC works good definitely recommend a high output alternator
@@Rustomod 90 amperes (Audi 100 C2) will be enough?
@@DVRollyNo. Current draw from this AC alone is probably around 100A by itself, not including power demands from the rest of the vehicle.
You'll need to upgrade to a 200A alternator.

Dude- it is Willys- like Phyllis. not Willies like Phillies.
why would you transform mecanic energy in electric and than back to electric if you can use it directly mecanicly? makes no sense. use a mecanic ac compressor, that´s the right way.
We can’t fit it
Three reasons:
1. Lack of engine bay space.
2. Avoiding parasitic losses.
3. Because it's an easier retrofit for a pre-AC car.
Do you even car, bro?
@@barrysnell6775 parasitic losses? you seems to have an magic alternator that runs without using power of the engine. I do a little bit, I have a shop. We adapt everything in everything, but electric ac, cause it´s junk, or electric stearing that needs the ecu to works correctly. I can´t see why it´s easier? you have to change the alternator to a BIG one, whats the problem to put a compressor in? space could be an argument, but if you need ac you had choesen the wrong engine.
@@oliverroedel1111 Belt driven AC compressors rob horsepower. Period, end of story. This is a well known fact. I've personally dyno'd an engine with and without the AC compressor, and the difference was 30 HP. That's a LOT for something non-essential.
The electric compressor is ideal because the engine already has an alternator. An upgrade to a 200A alternator allows a guy to run an electric AC compressor without changing anything else on his engine, or losing any more power.
Really, you're making this way harder than it is. The benefits are self-evident.
@@barrysnell6775 alternator robs horsepower too, thats why modern are controlled by ecu, you acelerate and the ecu shuts the alternator down. energy doesn´t comes from nothing, it´s transformed.
