- Azumanga Daioh is a show.... that is funny! It has Osaka, the opening, and OH MY GAH...?
Featuring the adventures of the girls in their lives as highschool students, they get into funny adventures with themselves, their teachers (one which needs to be checked out by police), and relaxation time in the summer. An iceberg about this series has already been done... but I hope this time around it's a better adaptation, no?

4:30 According to Wiktionary, "Kagura" and "Sakaki" can both be used either as feminine given names or as surnames in Japanese. Therefore, it is my personal theory that their full names are Kagura Kagura and Sakaki Sakaki, and they just never tell anyone their full names out of embarrassment

Fun Fact: In 2003, a bunch of high ranking officials in the BBC watched Azumanga Daioh and were amazed by Yukari's driving, to the point where they wanted to make a whole show about it. They couldn't actually hire Yukari for this show so instead they hired Jeremy Clarkson and Top Gear was born.

1:07 the opposite is true, Osaka acts the complete opposite (airheaded and passive) of the stereotypical Osaka resident (energetic and vulgar you name it) but is still ironicallly referred as such by her friendos anyway coz she’s from that city (even though she only lived there for a year or so lol), good video though

My wife is from Osaka, can confirm that she and her family are definitely energetic and charmingly vulgar, not passive airheads. Modern "Kansai/Osaka" stereotypes in Japanese media are definitely more in-line with those qualities (along with an obsessive love for takoyaki).
Maybe this was a stereotype that used to be true a long time ago because I've certainly never seen it.

5:20 Yukari never said that though, she was just shouting "love letter". Its just speculated that the one love letter she got in school was from Nyamo as it was an only-girls school so there were no boys
But even then, she could've written it for a boy elsewhere, or maybe someone else wrote it for her and she's ashamed of that? Maybe the love letter story happened while they were studying to become teachers. Plus, I'm not sure if Azuma himself was aware that they went to an all-girls school at that point. In any case, I highly doubt it was a letter from Nyamo to Yukari.
Nyamo seems to be into boys, probably the only explicitly straight woman in the cast. She blushes when someone asks her how Yukari was in her teen years, though. And in the manga (i don't recall seeing this in the anime) there's a panel where her and Yukari are watching a movie or something else and their hands are really close. Personally, i think this is just fan service, the blushing doesn't necessarily mean that she liked her and they weren't holding their hands properly in the movie scene. It's pretty much open to speculation, you could have your own headcanon about Nyamo being bi or straight.

I never explored this theory, but Yukari is my favorite character and I can kinda see this being a thing. I however do disagree that the show makes her look explicitly straight. Like, where lol

I think the negative emotional aura for Azumanga Web Daioh is the extremely saturated colors
The low quality, the kind of innocent (and really good sounding)music track that it's the only one used in the film, the low quality 3d, the different character designs and color choices and that Osaka shot that looks detailed but unsettling at the same time makes it seem like that. Basically, it looks extremely dated in comparison to the final series we got, is an early adaptation of how the anime could've been and the fact that the version we have in the internet is in a low quality contributes to it too, it just gives a vibe of seeing a place that is long gone at this point, a good memory (that none of us experienced) that has just faded away
Osaka's look melts my heart. I don't see how that video gives negative vibes.

We all know Ayumu Kasuga is aka "Osaka". She is called that because she speaks with a slight ACCENT typical of the region''s vernacular. And most obviously because she is from there. This is all clearly explained in Episode 1 of the anime. Not because she is "slow and spacey". in fact, Osaka's personality and mannerisms are antithetical to the general Osakan stereotype of being loud, brash and quick-witted. And again, her accent and speech are only subtly influenced, as evidenced by Tomo-chan encouraging (forcing? lol) Osaka to speak with a stronger accent, for her personal entertainment of course. The name stuck because Tomo proclaimed it as such and everyone readily agreed, much to Osaka's dismay

Azuma also made some Sailor Moon doujins, focusing on the daily life aspects of Sailor Moon. They're pretty high quality as far as fan works go, and I feel like they may have been a partial jumping off point for Azumanga Daioh itself.

9:18 Adding onto this, I decided to put Kaze no Iro March over the opening to see how much it lines up. While of course most of it doesn't exactly line up with the song, the first beginning part lines up pretty well.
It makes me theorize that the first part of the opening was made with Kaze no Iro March in mind. But even then that could just be a spooky coincidence.
I still have the file, so maybe I'll upload it at some point just to see what others think.
14:16 In the anime, Ayumi presents herself with a "normal" accent, much to the chagrin of Yukari (and Tomo). So she is strongly pushed to talk and behave like that. You can argue that all those puns and brass moments are her just faking it, because that's how she should be.
I personally has always seen the whole anime series as Ayumi's day dreaming how her school experience will be, as she is nervously traveling towards her first day. Yep.
From what I recall, I got more of the impression Osaka's accent was "slipping out" from time to time. She usually speaks fairly normal Japanese and even when she does use Kansai-ben, it's not overwhelming. It usually comes out when she says stuff like "darn it" (あかん). She said that A LOT along with using "ええ" instead of "いい." Never got the impression it was fake, just that Osaka's accent wasn't very thick to begin with.

OH HI I made this iceberg. i made an explanation document for everything but can't link it because it'll probably get marked as spam lol. i think some of them have already been mentioned by others but you got most of them right! the only one missing anything is that the japanese 2009 print of the manga does in fact have redrawn art beyond the extra lessons. a lot of these are also references to the mario 64 iceberg, like fancy-hearing cake (for delicious cake) and chihiro apparition (wario apparition). anyway, this was a very pleasant surprise to see!

Ive got the first volume of azumanga daioh in Japanese, and the drawings have been corrected compared to my French one, and each volume is for a year (so there are 3 volumes instead of 4)
There are also the supplementary lessons at the end of each
So there are 2 versions of the azumanga daioh manga existing, that’s a thing to add to the iceberg :3

There seems to be a lot of stuff that was cut in the anime like Wallaby's cameo, Osaka using the Ultraman mask, Chihiro dressed as the girl from Spirited Away and i think there's a whole character whose aparitions were almost completely cut out in the anime (a teacher) a video about that would be great.
Tomo's last name got changed in the anime too, the name "Takino" is only referenced in the manga in the Blue Three (Bruce Lee) joke panels title, so it has to be some kind of misinterpretation of how is written her original last name in Japanese (Ryuunou) like what happened with Kakyoin in JJBA

The joke of Osaka's character is that she acts nothing like a stereotypical Osakan. The dub localized her with a southern accent, but a more accurate localization would've been a New York accent.
Osakans are stereotypically rude, talk fast, and sound like the mafia. Everything Osaka is not.

Hey there, I'm the guy who made the original Azumanga Iceberg Video. I gotta say, this was pretty well done, my version has a lot of issues with the audio, mostly because I was using Movie Maker and it kept cutting stuff out.
Overall, you did a pretty good job with everything. But, no spaghetti joke? No misspelling of the word "their"? No grappling hook? I gotta give it a 0/5, just a total scam
actually there are aniamtion differences out there. specifically in the opening. the scene where some of the girls are flying on the text speech ballons were originally interlaced 60fps. other copies suggest they were 30fps and 24fps. vhs could be having the same master as the dvds or maybe something completely different.
Is there actually a list or comparison of DVD and Broadcast animation differences?
