    How I really learned Spanish (fast and easy!). The way in which I began to learn Spanish can be summed up very easily: comprehensible input. Listening to and reading stories, conversations, and relevant material that I knew I would need to apply to speaking, I acquired language very naturally and relatively quickly and easily, which helped me ease into conversations with less fear faster (within a few months). In this video, we discuss the meaning of comprehensible input and the effect that it will have on your Spanish language learning journey.

    Just hearing you speak Spanish so fluently really inspires me. I've studied Spanish for years but rarely spoke it because I felt so insecure, especially among native speakers. So I have this internalized Spanish. For me, it's more so overcoming my fears and worrying about understanding every single word and remembering vocab to use in conversations. I need to get back to daily immersion. I just want some Destino-like show from this millennium.

      I understand the fear (to a degree). However, i was taking with an Argentine friend and she said my Spanish communication skill was much better than the college Spanish professor where she attended here in the US. Not that my grammar was perfect and better than the professor's, but that my fluidity of speaking was easier to understand than the stiff perfection of the professor. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Native Spanish speakers won't be bothered (most of the time). Other Spanish students will be encouraged to see you are trying and it will remind then of where they once were too.

    • @gringoofcandamo
      @gringoofcandamo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I struggled with this at the beginning - the best way to overcome the fear is to find the right people to practice speaking with.. ideally a teacher, but it could be any native speaker that you have good rapport with - in my experience most native speakers love to help people learn their language. Accept that you WILL make mistakes, that's completely normal. If you make a mistake and someone corrects you - be grateful to them that they are trying to help you, they are not trying to make you feel bad.

    My hubby speaks Spanish as a third language. I studied in high school and college. I got an A but still feel like I can barely speak or remember anything. My hubby was told by a college Spanish professor that he would never learn Spanish. So he went to Ecuador fir the summer, stayed with a host family and took classes for two months. He came back fluent. He was determined. He built his vocabulary over time. Of course he made that professor eat cake. lol Moral if the story you can do anything you set your mind to. Don’t let anyone or yourself stop you from achieving any goals. Let’s learn some Spanish.

    A side note for self taught language learners....in some languages there's the "standard" vernacular, then there's the common usage lingo. You come across this in Netflix movies, on the street, and music, etc. After learning grammar and vocab, don't be too alarmed when you hear people breaking all kinds of language rules, omitting stuff, phrases that have certain context, etc. Some of it can be learned from books and videos,others from people...it's an ongoing process. I'm not talking about dialects, but that also is a thing to be aware of.

    • @EricaRayLanguage
      @EricaRayLanguage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Definitely so true! The input comes from so many different places. I remember as I picked up on all of those differences in speech (and continue to do so!) I was always grateful to have what could be considered more "standard Spanish" as a base (from the literature that I was exposed to and trained public speakers, etc...) because it gave me an anchor to compare everything else to and discovering those differences became more fun instead of frustrating for me.

    Hi! Your video resonated with me, because, although I'm now 78 years old (!) I've always wanted to learn Spanish & haven't given up yet! Like you, I discovered Destinos a couple years ago, and that helped somewhat. But being older definitely does make it more difficult! When I was in high school, I wanted so badly to take Spanish! I played the guitar and thought it would be cool to go to Mexico and share my music with the people there. But my mother insisted I take French, saying it would be more useful. Well - God rest her soul - she couldn't have been more wrong! Spanish IS the language to learn in the U.S., because of the # of Spanish speakers we have now. After 2 years of French in high school (not taught by a native speaker) and one year in college, I couldn't even make myself understood when, in Quebec, I asked to use the rest room in French, and they had no idea what I was saying. Anyway, it won't surprise you to learn that I married a Spanish teacher! He spoke really good Spanish. I begged him to teach me, but he'd never teach me more than a few simple words and phrases. When he was eligible for a sabbatical, I suggested that we spend the year in Mexico so he could hone his Spanish, and I and the kids could learn. But he refused. I finally realized that he was afraid that somehow I would surpass him. Being a male chauvanist, he resented my intellectual ability. Well, as you can imagine, my marriage finally broke up. My son married a woman from Colombia who speaks beautiful Spanish, and I'd love to converse with her. But it is really hard! I believe that Spanish is a very difficult language. I have a lot of respect for you, and will use your videos. Thanks for all you do.

      Lynne you should consider moving to a country like Guatemala for a few months. $400 for the ticket, around $1000/mo for full time Spanish lessons, room, and board.
      I did it a long time ago and while I'm not fluent (largely because I didn't apply myself) I speak enough Spanish to have a conversation and get around just fine. Plus it was one of the best experiences of my life.

      how is your spanish language journey going?!

    • @EricaRayLanguage
      @EricaRayLanguage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What a wonderful desire you have to reconnect with your language!! That's very exciting and I know that you can do it! ☺️ It's a very common experience that the school way of learning often does not result in a permanent knowledge of language or ability to use it well. I mentioned in the video that I tested out of University Spanish classes. I never actually took a Spanish class. But going by the experiences of many others who did study it in college, I can definitely say that those who learn well have taken the initiative to make Spanish a part of their life not just a part of their academic path. It's never too late! And I'm sure that you will find a lot coming back to you from what you already know when you start back again. Best wishes!

    I never heard the phrase "comprehensible input" before, but now after watching your video, I can say with certainty that I too learned Spanish in that way. I used to work for a refugee agency and we had a lot of Spanish speaking clients. At first I used some interpreters, but I always kept my ears open when listening to them translate. Later on, I just tried to give it a shot myself, and pretty soon I was speaking with my clients in almost fluent Spanish - nearly all of which I learned by simply talking with them on a regular basis (with a side of duolingo). After I left that job, I got another job, but that didn't involve too much client interactions; and, slowly, I forgot nearly all the Spanish I picked up.
    I am planning on trying to relearn Spanish, and your ideas were excellent. Thanks for the wonderful tips, Erica. Gracias y tenga una vida maravillosa!

    I’ve very recently started Spanish, and I love it. I find it very intuitive, but I’m lucky to be linguistically oriented. I’ve spent the last few months bouncing around collecting resources during the busy season. Your channel for Spanish teaching really clicks with me and it’s one of my top recommendations to my friends learning Spanish as well!
    I can’t agree more that input is so important, it’s what makes things click and feel natural. I think stories are key for forming an emotional attachment to language, I find it makes recall a lot easier anyway.
    For anyone who is an English speaker and feels that Spanish is “difficult,” I highly highly recommend coupling input with the LanguageTransfer Spanish course. The Thinking Method is free and Mihalis’ way of articulating Spanish to English understanding is something I haven’t seen anywhere else. It acts like a primer, almost the first thing people should go to, and then go through your other resources. As soon as I finish that audio course, I intend to systematically go through this whole channel! It’s the perfect balance of input and structure you have here.

      If you want to learn Spanish through music, I recommend you listen to slow music, like ballads.These songs in Spanish are so beautiful and much easier to follow the lyrics, compared to today's popular music, like reggaeton, which is way faster and quite often sex-oriented and disgusting, with all due respect.
      Here are some examples of beautiful ballads, which is my favorite genre btw (although they're kind of oldies):

      We’re not bordered with dozens of countries that speak numerous languages. The main official languages of the Western Hemisphere is English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Dutch.

      Sorry, but that's not quite acurate. My native French teacher said most people in France have no interest in learning another language, particularly English.

    During the pandemic I began watching Nollywood movies which for the most part were in English but at some point the language would switch to another 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️ . At that point I started watching movies with the subtitles on . The subtitles helped me a lot with recognizing the language (Yoruba) So I decided to order a a vocabulary book . I also started listening to Afro beats with the words which I use to assist with both my pronunciation and flow in short my confidence . There are so many Languages Africa so the music is my Gumbo . TH-cam is also a Great tool OMG , I sit down take notes and absorb. Anyway I now have 4 Yoruba books and 1 Hausa book . The amazing thing for me about learning another Language is just how amazing our Brains are . I’m not a pro in Spanish but I do know the basics . I can ask a few questions , tell the time , answer a few questions ofcourse sing the heck out of a song in Spanish etc. Anyway Great Video ‼️‼️🇺🇸🇳🇬♥️

    Wow Erica, I stumbled upon this video and truly believe with the "comprehensible input" methods you've laid out here can really set this African American 50+ yr. old male on the road to speaking Spanish successfully and fluently :D I think I'm Spanish in another life LOL b/c I love Spanish music from Cuba and I look forward to speaking the native language when I travel to Cuba and Costa Rica. I will absolutely begin my journey with your videos... wish me luck! Your video here has given me significant hope vs many other videos on Spanish that I have watched along with the various Spanish schools/classes that I investigated with on-going payments of their classes. Any suggestions for my begin journey??? Thank you!!!

      How awesome that you connect so well to the Cuban music and culture and your travel plans sound exciting! Music was my first exposure to Spanish and one of the things that made me fall in love with the language. :) Of course you can do it! As far as suggestions of how to get started, you may want to begin with considering your interests. If you need a free resource to start you can check out Destinos, a melodramatic TV series for beginning Spanish learners. It's what I used toward the beginning of my journey. :) www.learner.org/series/destinos-an-introduction-to-spanish/

I have taken classes and paid for things and still aren’t any better. I know a lot of words but why can’t I carry on a conversation? So frustrated. Is it because I’m much older?
