  • Madame Web reviews recently came out for the Sony Marvel movie, much to Hollywood's dismay. Disney changed the marvel MCU to center characters like She-hulk and focus on ramakes like Snow White with Rachel Zeger. But do audiences want this? Madame Web proved that the disasters keep getting worse, is it the end of the girlboss? Has Disney realised they need to change? Is Madame Web worth watching?

Madame Web Reviews left a lot to be desired, but were far from the only time a movie has failed in recent time for the reason of a Hollywood girlboss. This has caused Disney to "retool" in horror as they blame the bigoted fans for not liking the ideas that have been force fed to them. But this goes deeper than just which actor plays a role. It's down to the values and messaging of entertainment, and are we going to use masculine morality, or something else? And while Disney may WANT to retool, may TRY to change direction. But can they do that with the same staff hired that caused the problems in the first place? Do they even KNOW what the audience wants, even begrudgingly? Or are Disney's hiring practices so hard baked into the company that there is no turning back anymore? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

It's like asking the BAD PEOPLE FROM GERMANY to be nice to Jewish people and pamper them. They're not going to change, this is a religion to them. Even if Bob Iger really wants to change, the activists he helped put into the workforce and lower and middle management won't let him. Just like they rebelled against Bob Chapek.

In general women don't like capesh1t movies, so maybe Hollywood should stop trying to ram a cube through a round hole and accept that this is a male genre. The problem isn't "the girl/woman who is the key to everything" aspect, as many series have done it and have been successful (take example of Japanese Anime like the ongoing "Apothecary Diaries" or "Frieren" both focusing on female main characters and both being highly popular).
The problem is the forced idea that men are the issues of all problems while woman are all great and the solution to all problems. That it's wrong for a woman to rely on a man and should either rely on themselves or other women only, and like you said "realizes she is awesome" and she is complete and perfect from start (and it's Men who are making them imperfect and dragging them down).
The biggest issue is that, in order to put Women on the high pedestal, what they are doing is bringing down the Men, by various means, rather than co-working.

I used to really like superhero movies. I have a big brother so I always thought things he liked were cool... fantasy, star wars, super heroes. I loved these things and enjoyed them for what they were. I never thought, "wow... I wish I was represented...." I could go to other things and watch rom-coms and musicals and other things if and when I felt like it, but I liked Superhero movies how they were. I got "fatigued" before the girl boss era, so I'm REALLY lucky in that respect. I think the last Marvel movie I saw in theatres was Captain America Civil War. Went to the theatres to see Star Wars Force Awakens (which happened to be just a few weeks after my father passed away) and when they killed Han Solo we were like, "Nope. Okay. We're done." Also, 2016 we started down the road of watching Korean Dramas and we haven't looked back since. Way more interesting, way more intelligent, and even if some tropes and situations are over played, I don't even care. It's FUN and I'm entertained.

The best they can do is make it a little more subtle than it is in other current day shows, but thats not good enough for me. I dont want just a little bit of shit on my steak. I want a steak without any shit on it.

This situation is not unique to Disney. Major media companies in all kinds of industries, from journalism to game development, hire based on DEI. It's natural that people who are hired in this way will double down on whatever got them the job. The news outlets, AI, Hollywood, gamedev, it's the same everywhere, the workers don't care about profits or merit, they only care about getting "the message" out, even if it kills their industry. If it's them losing their jobs or the industry being killed, of course they choose the latter.

I saw Peter Criss' solo band KRISS live in my town. They didn't like how mellow the crowd was so the singer was like "All right everybody, this is a new song we just wrote, I hope you all like it" and then they started playing randomly as loud as they could and they sang 'Springfield sucks! Springfield sucks!' over and over again for several minutes. I didn't know at the time how avant garde he really was.

Sounds to me like Pearson is the guy they just give scripts to for a final touch-up, not because he is good, but because that is his job in the company. He is like the retailm manager who is put in to failing stores not to make them better, but so they can reassign the previous manager somewhere else.

People dont know Hollywood actors anymore because Hollywood studios decided the IP of franchises was more important than having universal stars that command more money. It's been decades since the age of the action hero, or rat pack comedians who did tons of movies that were all hits. So now the Names are on social media making a name for themselves.

I'm not a conservative, so I can't agree with you on all your points. (For example I don't think that movie stars hate people like me and don't care what they say on Twitter.) But your main point is excellent, and I agree with you on that completely: the problem is the people who run the studios and make the decisions, because they're out of touch with modern audiences.
That unnamed Disney executive you quote is making one fundamental mistake, probably because they don't want to accept that their values are the problem. It isn't just the segment of the audience that has been politicized that sees the messaging in films as a quality issue - _it's everyone._ The Marvels didn't fail that hard because conservatives checked out - everybody checked out, because general audiences have learned to identify "messaging" as the common factor in movies they don't enjoy. When the heroes are always girl bosses and the villains are always cowardly men there's no dramatic tension. You can predict the whole story just from who's cast in the roles. That's boring, and people have had enough of it.

They don't want the "old gender stereotypes", and, CLEARLY, audiences don't want the "new gender stereotypes". So why the hell couldn't they have just avoided gender stereotypes altogether??? Because they worship themselves, that's why.

The hero is very much alive. Some of the stories coming out of Ukraine are enough to give a man a lump in his throat. Young lads in their teens surrounded fighting off dozens of enemies single handed. Wounded men telling their comrades to get out while they give them time to escape with their lives. Hollywood isn't real life. Real life is real life.

I think what makes me furious is that Hollywood claimed it was going to stop having homophobic depictions of gay men and have gay representations and what we got is feminist karens with money. I don't want to watch movies that are sexist and judgemental. I remember laughing when childhood Cruella said" I am woman, hear me roar" lol . I don't think tv shows like BBC's Merlin could even be produced anymore by a large studio since they don't have enough "poc characters" which is absurd because medieval towns in Europe weren't downtown la but I digress. Any time they produce a good tv shows anymore they cancel it or run it into the ground with terrible writing so why would I pay for a streaming service. I think Hollywood is dead and so are most western studios. Beyond indy film studios in europe I doubt any of these movie houses will survive. Movie theaters will also likely go the way of dance halls.

The issue isn't with the "girl boss" per se. The issue is with the *OVERUSE* of the girl boss. The same with political messaging. Both are fine when used sometimes.
The problem that Hollywood created is that they relied on the girl boss and the political messaging. They were so focused on using both wherever they could that the writing suffered.
There have always been girl bosses and political messaging in entertainment. It wasn't absolutely everywhere though, they were used sporadically. Whether there was a girl boss or political messaging or not the writing was always the most important.

The problem with Disney is that their core audience that they have been pandering to for the last 30 years has been women and girls. They've taken the whole princess thing, and they've been running with it and making big Bank off of it since the 90s. What they were attempting to do with the MCU is to turn comic book characters from the Marvel Universe into the next generation of Disney princesses. They fail to realize that more than 60% of comic book readers are men. Those are the majority is there a ticket sales. So if men aren't going to watch the M-she-U, then they are destined to fail. Hopefully they've learned their lesson they have learned their lesson and will not repeat it.

The irony is that many of the films from when I was growing up DID have actual kick ass females. I mean Ripley? Absolutely bloody hardcore alpha female, who we all LOVED cos she didn’t need to beg for our affection and because even though so was so tough she was still in danger. And this is not the only example at all… in fact strong women were always there - they just had no interest in being men for the most part. The female leads these days are away more pathetic and way less believable or likeable. I don’t see how this is even ‘progress’.

  • @thebiologist8662

Hollywood is slowly devolving into Spanish cinema. Spanish cinema has long since become a platform for political and ideological commentary and for failed actors to leech off state grants, with movies that can't even earn 1/100th of what they cost to produce. Only one in a 1000th is successful enough, but most are only screened in local cinemas for a few days and with less than 1000 viewers.
It didn't use to be that way. Spanish movies used to be good and Spanish cinema used to forge great international actors and directors, but it slowly declined as politics, morality, and ideology seeped in, just way faster than in Hollywood, and then the vast majority of movies became just that, a way to bash on society or an opposing point of view, and people simply stopped watching them.
Hollywood needs to break out of that downward woke spiral if it doesn't want to end like that.

We had Alien, Buffy, Xena. The girl powa was novel, Buffy was comedic and she has supernatural strength, Xena was also a comedy and Ripley used weapons and smarts but not to defeat men. And "girl powa" was not so bad as it wasn't really an issue as it wasn't "Girl boss" so much, it wasn't women being dominant over men or "boss" so much, it wasn't women replacing men, it was just about women having a shot in the spotlight doing action stuff. And let's face it, Lucy Lawless who was fighting men as Xena was more fitting for the role than some of the waif's they cast now who are meant to overpower men. It seems that they are no longer content to go slowly and win hearts and minds, they have moved with the gender, race and trans and other issue into almost an attempt to offend and indeed many women, people of colour and trangendered folk also thing a lot of this woke stuff has gone too far.

The Musk approach is the only way forward for these studios. The advantage they have is that there's a massive amount on untapped talent that was shoved aside, and maybe they'd be willing to return to resume doing what they used to do well? The alternative is to decline, surrendering the market to studios able to put out quality products at a far lower cost. That's doable, although not without the industry as a whole seeing a period of contraction (e.g. cinemas closing).

The problem will always be that the money is the sole driving factor behind movies. Art takes the backseat and is outweighed by the financial outcome. This feels like a McDonald's more then an art business. Artist have to create a genuine and heartfelt product and hopefully the studios can pick the ones that will draw audiences. You can't make art on the basis of what people want... The people are not creators, they are consumers, ready to absorb some new and never seen vision from a great writer. If the product is good, the money will follow. If money drives creation by trying to please everybody (This is where McDonald's comes in) they will produce shit and draw flies. Artists have to be in the driver's seat otherwise your product is doomed to fail. You can't predict what audiences will like so you have to give artists the task of looking inside themselves and propose something that feels real and will resonate with the public. They will be the judges of what they like. Remember the car that Homer Simpson designed..? Yeah that's what people want !!!!!!

That is so freaking insulting to me... because I'm a woman, and I agree that these movies are garbage. Why are they conflating bad movies with "movies for women"?
In another video you mentioned an article that said Amazon is making shows for men, like Reacher. But I freaking LOVE Reacher. It's a fantastic show with great characters.
