#86: Insulating the Greenhouse (with bubble wrap) to extend the growing season || Plot 37

  • This week in the vegetable garden we get two big jobs done: Emptying the Leaf Mould bin and Insulating the Greenhouse.
    What is Leaf Mould? And How do you Make it? In this vlog i talk quite a bit about making leaf mould in bins or bags, how long it takes to rot down and what the end product is good for in the garden.
    I'm experimenting with over-wintering chillis to try again in order get a better crop next year. We successfully over-wintered a Hot Lemon (aka Aji Lemon) chilli plant last year but that was the only one. So we look at how i am over-winterring them this year.
    I have a few more plants to plant out into the polytunnel for winter salad picking. Some lambs lettuce and ice gems.
    Then its time to start insulating the greenhouse. I'm using bubblewrap, its an excellent insulator and the clips i use to attach it are these one:

    I think you have a winning formula. Sometimes specifically how to do tasks, sometimes cooking and best of all catch ups. I think most of us have a plot or a garden and it is nice to see something to aspire to, in my case. I don't want to have chickens but I love to see how they are doing. I have started growing plants I had previously never heard of thanks to you. Thank you! I have also grown so many herbal plants and companion plants just to see what happens.

    Just found your channel, Jessie, and am loving your video!
    Your use of bubble wrap to insulate your greenhouse is brilliant. DId you know you can use bubble wrap, cut to the size of the glass, to insulate your house's windows? You lightly spritz the window with ordinary tap water and place the bubble wrap against it. After about a week, you need to repeat the process (same piece of bubble wrap , you don't need a new one) and will need to continue to do so throughout the winter. Even if you have thermal pane windows, this will bolster heat retention in the house.
    And as for your container lettuce, it will be lovely; lettuces only need about 10cm/4 inches of soil, being shallow-rooted plants.
    All the best to you, and love to your mum!

    I've enjoyed the various trips out and adventures you've taken us on which breaks up all the allotment based stuff. How about planning a few days out to some less well known gardens in London - Fulham Palace Gardens, Chelsea Physic, Richmond Park are all fairly close to you. I also like the cooking/recipe ideas which sometimes inspires me more to grow a particular vegetable than the actual gardening side of it. How about doing a complete seed to plate growing guide for a particular veg - I mean film all the stages over the season and then put it all together a single step-by-step video including how you cooked it post harvest.

    • @JessieatPlot37

      Thank you! Its really interesting to see how many people have enjoyed the little trips. I love them and it makes the vlog more long term sustainable for me but i wasn't sure how they were going down! But will be carrying them on next year. Our allotment is practically in richmond park so yep, very close! Loads of places around to visit so i'll be doing that.
      I had the 'whole process' videos in mind but need to get a whole years footage really to put that together so i might attempt some of those too!

    • @amassing
      @amassing 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JessieatPlot37 The problem with a weekly vlog is that the content doesn't have much longevity whereas a standalone whole process video will hopefully attract new viewers for many years after it's made. I would plan on gradually building up a library of this sort of content. Much as I and many others love watching you potter around the allotment with your mum accompanied by tinkly piano music, I think there will ultimately be a limited audience for it.

I like the variety of soil,structures,chickens,working with Mum,odd things that crop up even the disappointments, planting sowing weeding,shed. Everything.Even the colourful hats. Sometimes I see stuff and reminds me about things in my own garden. This year my husband made me a new frame for extra beans. All because your inspiration with your frames and beans. I will try to watch out for the Community posts for the polls but I can still only see them on my phone and I’ve tried to see if it’s a notification thing but alas I haven’t figured it yet.
    In the meantime my two favourite bonus videos were the polytunnel build and your advice for new allotment holders - which was great advice generally. Also anything that involves chickens hahaha.
    I really need to figure out another bin just for leaf mould. I just mixed the majority into my bins and just dumped some directly into the beds and greenhouse (I have some compost boxes/bins out of pallets but also a large barrel one, which is helpful for breaking down kitchen waste a bit first and then it’s added to the boxes). We have lots of space but it’s negotiating a bit with the hubby, as I guess I have to take some of his needs into account in the yard. 😂. Although I am lucky to have quite a bit dedicated to garden, greenhouse and hen house so this isn’t a serious complaint. Next year the hope is to finish the landscaping so I can figure out dedicated beds for flowers. I have been using pots and some inter planting with the veg.
    My current garden tasks are trying to save the lonely Brussel sprout plant in hopes they can be part of Xmas din and trying to grow some lettuce inside. We experienced a massive food chain issue because of flooding in other parts of the province and it’s got me wishing I had done more to try season extending this year 😳. Things are sort of back on track although some farmers have been wiped right out and it’s so very sad for them as hundreds of acres were devastated of established fruit, vegetables and livestock. That said I’m sure our food comes from many places although I try to find Grown in BC stickers when I’m not either growing my own or supporting local farmers.
    Take care until next week (I would have made a hot toddy at any point and just gone to bed with a good book 😏).

      @JessieatPlot37  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, i have to admit, i find the community post a bit random. I seem to have a hard time finding where mine vanish too after i post them sometimes.... lol. I might do a test and see you can see what!
      Hahaha, garden space negotiations are a serious business! :D I wish you luck. My battle ground is the Shed at home that is predominantly Dad's... i'm sneaking bits in all the time!
      Sorry to hear about the flooding. We had a lot of farm land here flooded out in the spring this year that really took its toll. glad to hear things are coming good again.... and yes to the hot toddy and bed!!

    Morning Jess and Mum. Well done on wrapping your greenhouse, gee Jess you made it look so easy,those clips work a treat. Good luck with the chillies I had one capsicum last outdoors through winter and it was a cold one, it’s now coming into leaf slowly as spring was lousy and finally having some sunny warm days, interestingly I’d cut back just not so hard as you have done and left in pot, I’ll be watching with interest how the hard prune and repot goes.
    I hope things don’t get too tough with the new variant, just as our borders were to re open properly it arrived here via approved arrivals too so they shut down for a few weeks longer. We’ve been so blessed in Tasmania. But I’m hoping two sons out of three still come for Christmas from interstate and new grand baby.
    Cheers Jess and mum, hope the cold is better soon. Take care.

We are at about 5k new cases a day in this City but life has gone back to normal pretty much. Apart from wearing a mask on public transport you wouldn't know it was still here!

    Re leaf mould… isn’t it wonderful. We have 2 leaf mould bins, one for using, one for rotting down. Our small wildlife friendly lawn is only mown twice a year. The rest of the time it is eaten by our “working” guinea pigs who also provide copious amounts of used bedding for the compost heap😀. I collect the leaves with a rake which also scarifies the “lawn” so there is some moss and bits of grass/ vegetation in the leaf mould but not enough to go soggy and smelly. Very few weed seeds in the leaf mould so it is v g as topping on raised beds to suppress weed growth😀😀, byee, Jinxy

  • @Nicktgrief
    @Nicktgrief 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I tend to leave my bubble wrap up as it keeps the greenhouse warm in the winter and it reduces the sun a tad in the summer saves putting shading up 😎 Your leaf mould is a great peat substitute so you could sterilise some of your sandy soil and add leaf mould to in and some John Innes base fertiliser and make your own JI potting mix( normally its 7:3:2Loam:peat :grit but you could probably get away with 8parts soil 4parts leaf mould.).
    Hope you feel better soon and stay away from the peoples 😎🤣

    • @JessieatPlot37

      It took me aaaages to take the bubble wrap down this year because 1. spring was so cold and 2. i didn't get round to it! But i found it had glued itself to the glass when the temps got up high!
      Yeah, leaf mould is something i wish they'd use as a peat substitute more often because some of the other things they are using isn't working!

    I subscribe to many of these blogs but yours is the one I look forward to most. I wish you still done two but I know it must take up a lot of your time. As for a plan in new year I would say please keep us in on whateva you do at the plot and with the chick chicks. What work you are doing what your plans are for the future. I love to hear all about you. I not sure how old you are but I think my son and daughter are roughly your age. I also think it’s really great that you do it all with your mum she must really love it. We never see your dad but you do mention him from time to time. Also do you have a boyfriend? I do hope you get out and about a bit more than we actually see. I would also love to see some of your artwork. But as far as the plot you have inspired me to do stuff on our plot I am growing field beans for first time. I also have a patch of green mustard that will die off in winter. We do no dig and trying not to put anything extra apart from homemade compost and weed chip. I don’t use anything to kill any insect. We are trying to be virtually self sufficient in fruit and veg but we not there yet. Thanks Jessie I think you are great and love watching you. Keep going won’t you. 👍😍

    You need to tell the allotment it not winter yet, they’re a month early. Leaf mould the greatest addition to your soil. I’ve stopped using wooden labels, they rot too quickly. I use plastic one and clean them with nail vanish remover, rinse and then clean in hot water. I waiting for the summer bulbs to be available to buy, I want a ginger and caladium. Interesting you asked this because i forgot to mention iot in the video... the first year i had them 'flat side' against the glass. the second year i had them the other way around and i found bubble side against the glass stopped it sticking and allowed an air pocket between the glass and wrap that seems to be much more effective. This year my air gap has been increased loads by keeping the trellis up... so we'll see how that goes!

    Slowly binge watching your Vlog and loving it. Was wondering if you had done anything on compost and if so, could you point in the direction of the vlog to watch. I am lucky enough to have lots of flower beds/ raised beds/ a greenhouse and a poly tunnel which I like to mulch, usually with mushroom compost. I do need to buy in bulk but its a minefield in terms of price and quality - have you got any suggestions/recommendations which might help?

    THanks for the tips on insulating the greenhouse with bubble wrap. What are the clips that you used for attaching the bubble wrap to the aluminum studs and where can you buy them?

    Hi Jess just wanted to know why you didn't throw the older leaves on top of the new leaves that you collected, instead of keeping the older leaves in the bags.
    Take Care,
    Barry (Wirral)😀

      Hi Barry!
      Good question. Thats because its quite a closed process. If i just kept throwing leaves on top then i'd have mould at two different stages in the same bin and thats means i either use the old leaves when they are past their best or use the next years when they aren't ready.
      With leaf mould theres only about 2 months of the year when you make it and thats it, the years lot in one bang. It's not so much like compost where you keep adding to it throughout. Although because i use the 3 bin composting system i don't just keep adding to that either to be honest.
