    Cracking video Eli! I knew you'd have the stats! Really cool to see someone giving such in depth explanation of their experiencing insulating a greenhouse. It seems like one of those things that is often recommended but without much evidence!
    Excited to see how things develop as the frosts arrive :)

    • @eliandkate

      Glad you enjoyed it! I promise, lots more stats to come and yes.... I was getting really annoyed with the lack of info, it’s the same with stuff about unheated greenhouses, like folk can’t imaging growing without heating and heated propagates or mats and lights. :)

    Excellent greenhouse update video Eli. The weather is a bit weird at times because this year it's not been as cold and freezing as last November. There has been more sunshine compared to last year. Scotland has 4 seasons in 1day a lot.

    Hi Eli and Kate, Thank you for this great update on you bubble-wrapped greenhouse, No from passed experience you do get condensation in the greenhouse with bubble wrapped roof area for that reason I have not done my roof area BUT I do have heating in mine and it has been on 3 nights this past week, I shall be interested in future updates to see how you have gone on, Have a look at Grumbleweeds latest video he has the same heater as I do, I reckon over those 3 nights it has cost £2 overall that's not bad, Take care and stay safe.

      Alas.... no power in the greenhouse so no heating for me. But to be honest I've never had heating so I dont miss it. :)

      Hey Caroline Wright I'm glad you're enjoying the videos 🙂
      If you want a place to start with the videos.. it might be worth grabbing a cuppa and sitting with these two greenhouse specific playlists. That way you get to go through the journey with me when I got my greenhouse and see all the brilliant stuff to come and all the things to thinking about :)

    You're lucky with your microclimate. We've had a couple of quite hard frosts down South. I have a greenhouse heater set to run when the temperature at ground level gets below 5 degrees. You're right to worry about condensation, mildew on my salvia and verbena cuttings can be a real problem. Even in winter, when it gets above 5 or 6 degrees, I open up the greenhouse doors to give it an airing.

    What a great update!! It was all good and helpful but the last bit about your personal response was fab, after all isn't gardening all about our personal relationship with the garden and what we grow. If we don't feel good about it then chances are it won't work - love it, and don't think I will be wrapping my new greenhouse (due to be delivered in March yeah) for much the same reason. It will be quite close to the house and I know I will be staring lovingly into it all the time...

    Fun video. I loved the phrase "stats monkey!" I guess I might be one too, but it's good to be informed by data!!
    A while back I sent you a comment expressing my envy for your seed trays. Huw Richards is now selling them on line in America so I can buy some for my Seattle WA garden! Happiness!!!
    But I want you to know, I still envy you for your greenhouse.
    Blessings to you and Kate. Keep making your delightful videos, please!

      Hey Gia,
      us stats monkeys need to stick together :D
      Glad you can get the seed trays now, didn't realise Huw was selling them. Hope they aren't too expensive. I'm still not sure if I'm a fan of them or not, another season should help me decide.
      There are going to be some more stats fun type videos coming up, so keep an eye out... I've got myself a new weather centre for the garden :D

    Which ND filter do you use? I use fixed ones, that variable one looks really good.
    Thanks for the update great video, so enjoyable.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's just the globe filters. I have standard filters for photography, for horizons etc but the variable ones are just much easier for filming.

    Another brilliantly helpful video, thank you! I'm learning so much from you sharing your experience so generously. I watched the 'What temperature is your greenhouse' video also and am going to need to save up for one of those cunning bluetooth thermometer/humidity monitors. At the moment I have a digital min/max thermometer in there. I'd also be really interested to know more about your garden journal - what kinds of things you record, etc. I've been enjoying keeping mine this year and find it incredibly useful and also a creative outlet where I can enjoy playing with colours and pens and stickers and photos as I incorporate them into the more practical info that I record. I'm always curious as to how other people keep their garden journals!

      It's nothing fancy..... I'll show you guys but basically its mostly just a way for me to keep a record so I can explain anything unusual etc.

    I have a 12x8 greenhouse.....the opposite end to the door faces North...I have replaced the glass with upvc hollow board & one side wall facing North East has also had the glass replaced with upvc hollow board....but not the roof. I have installed a humidity controlled exhaust fan on the North wall at head height....I also run a 12inch fan, placed on a concrete slabbed floor running 24hrs a day continually.....I can honestly say I have never had mould or mildew of any description within the greenhouse.....

    You are the spitting image of Jodie foster, even the way you speak (apart from the Scottish accent lol)
    Anyhoo, I've just bought a polycarbonate greenhouse, after watching your videos. I had absolutely no idea that it needed heat in winter, lights and watering system & so much more 😬 I didn't research enough 🙄. I'm retired now & have always wanted a greenhouse (I used to use my window ledges when kids were wee)& I'm on a tight budget. I've started tomatoes and a few herbs & cuttings from other people's gardens.
    Any suggestions where I can get things cheap? I'm not great with technology & always seem to mess up lol
    I stay in Millerston just outside Glasgow and the winds can be pretty bad too so was looking at glazing tape & canny even do that right 🙄

    • @dubblechunkz
      @dubblechunkz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And I love your videos. Just getting through them this last week ☺

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ha haha I must confess, I absolutely don't see the Jodie Foster thing LOL
      But I'll take it as a compliment.
      You absolutely don't need heating or watering systems or anything like that for the greenhouse. Those are all extra things you can have if you want to. I had my polycarbonate for 6 years with no heating and had no watering system for the first couple. I've only just added heating to my greenhouse this year.
      I still got a fantastic haul of tomatoes and peppers etc, it just meant that I had to pay attention to the weather and temperature :D
      I'd say hold off on spending pennies until you've got a season or two under your belt with this greenhouse, so you really get to know it ( and fall in love with it). Then you can decide if you want to go all fancy shmansy :D
      Heating wise - I don't think there is a cheap option - hence bubble wrap etc to try to minimise heat loss, but the whole self-watering thing, you can make your own :D

    Wrapping is not a bad idea, but in the long run, if freezing outside it will not suffice : due to thermal leaks your green house temperature will go inevitably down, so a minimum of heating will be necessary to maintain inner temp above 0°C if it freezes seriously outside...

    Eli, what material is that on your floor? My greenhouse has redwood planks for the flooring, and I’d like to seal them up a bit. Also, I’ve gone two nights now after putting the pea, broccoli, and spinach seedlings from the inside grow light to the greenhouse. The seedlings are holding up well, despite near freezing nighttime temperatures (although, we still have temps in the 60-67 degrees F during the days.

    My greenhouse is currently a shell with only a few panes of glass so handy to know for next year if the bubble wrap will work. I woke this morning to minus 3 temps and hard frost 🥶 (that was fun defrosting the car at 0745 to take hubby to work 🥶) I'm thinking of getting one of those Bluetooth temp things for my porch as I've loads of plants out there and the cheap thermometer I bought says it was still about 3 degrees in my porch so would be handy to know
