    I tried making pickled green tomatoes. Was pretty excited as there's lots of TH-cam videos that make them sound delicious. I was really disappointed I have to say. Mushy and flavourless. If you do ever find a successful use for green toms then I would like to hear it.

    For onion seeds, seedlings, leeks and garlic, I am u sing all the spent compost in tubs that housed a variety of summer crops, just topping them with a few inches of fresh compost.
    I am a bit concerned that there may not be enough drainage though.

    Jessie in America we eat fried green tomatoes & they are delicious!! You slice them dip them in slightly bitten egg with a fork then pass them in small crushed bread crumbs (I particularly like then ones that have Italian seasoning in them) Then fry them!! DELICIOUS 😋😋😋 Drain them on paper towels to get ride of extra oil!! You can do them in Airfyer also with no oil!!🇺🇸🇬🇧

Last year we were eating ours up till January. Found a good new tom called pannovy very nice red salad type. When I start them off next year if you would like a few let me know and I will post you some. God bless bill

    Amazing to still be picking tomatoes isn't it?
    I just composted the last plant that were in tubs indoors. I need the space for greens seedlings. I usually feel some grief when the summer crops end but not since being ready with lots of autumn and winter seedlings. Already the polytunnel staging is lined with compost bags full of little plants and we have harvested baby leaves for a few days.
    Lots of love to Anikin. So good he stole the lamb. You need to stock up on lamb😍

    I agree, green tomato chutney is quite thin on flavour, however I was given a hamper containing a small producer's Red tomato chutney. Really flavoursome, fresh tomatoiness, complex flavours, brilliant with plain extra mature cheader. Still, how many meals do you eat plain cheese? I have huge black russian tomatoes I'm wondering what to do with. Done Chicken in tomato, baked wirh aubergines, bolognaise all frozen. Now soups and juice I think. Last year's glut was cucumber, no successful storage recipes, all pretty tasteless. 😉.
    Been brambling and crab apple harvesting too, tis the season...

    Good job on the polytunnel door Jessie. Poor Annekin. One of our cats got kicked in the face by a cow in the field next door. His poor face was squashed and he wouldnt eat due to major sinus congestion. We got him to eat in the end by squirting Webbox Lick -e- Lix into his mouth, also Melting Hearts by Gourmet in the round tin, heating his food up (maybe that's why Annekin stole the lamb bcause it was hot) the vet told us to try this! Also tuna and any strong fish and to pour the juice over any catfood. Hope it helps, its so sad. I'm glad to hear he's eating now though. Big hugs.

    Your Shallots, if you wanted to you could grow them in pots - I've done it in the past . 1 per 7" (2ltr) pot if you want large shallots. Pickling size you can get away with a 6"pot. And peas ... I'm just about to sow some ( DOuce Provence) in hanging baskets and putting in the greenhouse ... they work OK

    • @JessieatPlot37

    One technique I have used when a cat stops eating is introduce some food competition: may be a thought to consider a new rescue kiltie in the house. There are always cats who need a good home at Britain's version of the SPCA. Fourteen isn't ancient for a cat. Most of mine have lived into their late teens/early 20's.

    Green Tomato Pie
    1-1/2 cups sugar
    5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    Pinch salt
    3 cups thinly sliced green tomatoes (4 to 5 medium)
    1 tablespoon cider vinegar
    Pastry for double-crust pie (9 inches)
    1 tablespoon butter
    In a bowl, combine the sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Add tomatoes and vinegar; toss to coat.
    Line a pie plate with bottom crust. Add filling; dot with butter. Roll out remaining pastry; make a lattice crust. Trim, seal and flute edges. Bake at 350° for 1 hour or until tomatoes are tender. Cool on a wire rack to room temperature. Store in the refrigerator.

    I like a twit removed all my tomato plants even though they looked green and nice. I thought nothing would grow now as its October and they had flowers on. Was this the right thing to do Jessie?🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m new to all this forward thinking, sowing seeds at the right time ( I always get it wrong) and I don’t know where to begin with succession planting. I don’t own a green house or a poly tunnel. Plus I am going in a small space. Help needed. Pretty please 😊

      if you had no decent size green tomatoes on the plants it was correct to remove them, too late for them to develop fruit from flowers. I chucked my plants which had only tiny tomatoes on, they won't grow bigger this time of the year. Full (or nearly) full size green tomatoes I put on the windowsill in the sun to colour up

    Bad squirrel & bird problem here, for years I haven't been able to allow a SINGLE tomato to ripen on the vine!! Horrible. They are all picked half-ripe & allowed to ripen inside at room temperature. At frost, I pick everything, and the hardest green ones I batter & FRY. Preheated oil/pan very important, otherwise the food will get soggy. But very nice, almost lemony flavor to fried green tomatoes! 👉If I have millions, green jalapeno salsa. Jalapenos, onions, green tomatoes! For tacos, eggs, nachos, and of course as tortilla chip dip.

    I planted one beefsteak tomato this year because I never have success with them they are always little.
    This year because of the hot weather we had quite a few tomato’s mostly small but no flowers on the beefsteak then suddenly flowers on the plant and of course it was to late to get many ripe but boy did they get big, fortunately for me I like green tomato chutney also I’m going to have a go of green tomato chow chow the Americans seem to like this so I’m giving this a whirl 👍🏼
    Has anyone else had trouble with white fly my tomato’s runner beans courgettes and herbs have been absolutely smothered with them. • @magpie1492
      @magpie1492 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wash leaves, cut off stalks. Allow to dry. Open freeze on a tray. When frozen put in a ziplock bag. You can crush to make chopped parsley.
      Parsley is pretty resilient and will continue to grow throughout winter unless bitterly cold etc. I plant my parsley into my tomato pots. Once I have removed the tomato plants, I leave the parsley for winter/spring. In September, I chop half of the pots severely. This encourages new fresh growth for winter. This means that I should have a steady supply for winter and no need to freeze.

    • @JessieatPlot37
      @JessieatPlot37  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, just wash it and then make sure its fully dried before you freeze it. I don’t chop off the stalks because i use them too. But as long as its dry and you lay it out on a tray or something to freeze first them bag it up once frozen… should be good!
