Hey Tim, I would love you're opinion on my Explorer conundrum. I was in the market for my first Rolex in 2019 for my 30th. The Explorer and Datejust have always been my two favourite Rolex designs but I opted against the Explorer for several reasons. I had the option to purchase a new 39mm and although the build quality was amazing I wasn't keen on the proportions. I tried on an older 36mm 114270 and found the proportions perfect but couldn't handle for inferior the build quality was compared to its modern counterpart and also preferred brand new for my first luxury watch. I considered a black dial 36mm oyster perpetual but realised this was a compromise that would lead to regret. Then Rolex updated the 36mm Datejust and I feel in love with the 126234 black dial jubilee bracelet with fluted bezel. I choose the black dial as I found this combo the most pleasing to my eye and figured it would be the most versatile. Im still in love with this watch several years later and would never consider selling, however my original plan was to buy a Rolex and wear it pretty much everyday. Although the Datejust is surprisingly versatile the fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet isn't always appropriate as it can be a bit flashy. I'm also quite active (I'm an avid gym goer and love hiking) and always reach for my g shock. I never thought Rolex would re-release the Explorer in 36mm and therefore put it to the back of my mind. Now I can't stop thinking about it. I apologise for the essay but my question ultimately comes down to this, is the new 36mm Explorer to samey samey compared to my 36mm Datejust black dial jubilee bracelet with fluted bezel or would it make the perfect two piece Rolex combo meal deal!? Thank you in advance
It just so happens that I have both of these watches. The Explorer I is mine, but DJ36 is my friend's. I will make a video answering this question. Thank you for the essay. I actually really appreciate these kinds of comments.
@@TimWrite thank you for the response! I know you currently have possession of both these timepieces as I'm a regular viewer of the Pontiffs livestream hence the reason for me reaching out to yourself. I'm a big fan of the new crew. If I'm being honest I wasn't so keen on you at first but your love of fragrances, hiking and now the 36mm Explorer have won me over haha. I really appreciate you doing a video on the matter and would like to offer some points to consider: Similarities- both Rolex, black dial, steel 36mm. Differences- one has a date function whereas the other is wind and wear. One has a fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet whereas the other is smooth with a brushed oyster bracelet. Also 3 6 9 👊🏼
@@TimWrite thank you for coming through with the video Tim! It was great to see the two watches side by side! I might even show it to the sales assistant at my local AD, who knows it may help? 🤷🏻♂️

Picked up mine today and the more time I’ve spent with it, the more I love the size. I actually think it’s the correct size and other manufacturers have made larger watches to justify price tags. I have a Seamaster too which is 42 and it now feels too cumbersome!
Just got mine and absolutely love it. As you say it's a watch for you and not to show off to anyone else. It's truly understated and just a classical timeless piece. Love it and also appreciate the smaller size having worn mostly 40mm + watches for years.
9:01 Tim write - “I am not really a collector, I am a watch wearer! (And a wearer with a purpose)” So true. This is why we love Tim Write. Not afraid to wear true enthusiast watches like IWC and Panerai
I really enjoy this style of reviewing a watch. You get a feeling of what it's actually like to be wearing it outside. Much better than close up high quality shots in a box with a narration on the background!
Well done getting the first and best footage of the 124270. I love the thinner bezel compared to the 214270 - will show fewer scratches than the 39mm bezel. I still love all versions of this piece though.
Nice review (and tour). Great move by Rolex. I had a 39 ((which I foolishly sold, given the price spike). It was an awkward size, it always seemed a bit small my 7.2 wrist (I have an AK now which is just right for me), but it didn’t look good on my 21 year old son who has a 6.5 wrist. It was an awkward size. This 36 would be great on him, something for him to work towards. The two tone is for sporty ladies.
I feel like eating pizza while reviewing a Rolex is trolling HODINKEE 🤣🤣🤣. Great video, Tim. Would love to see more of you out and about with the watches.
Nice review. I was hoping for years that Rolex would re-release the 36mm Explorer at some point. The only AD in my country received the demo piece last week, so I was able to see one in person. I immediately decided to order one, and it turned out there are already 5-10 people on the wait list.
Thank you! Very enjoyable review! Just nice to see the watch out in the wild. I have my name on the list for the Explorer 1. I did own a 114270 as well, so I am looking forward to the updates on this one. Also, really enjoyed the tour of Soho. I live in Vancouver, Canada, but absolutely love New York. I cannot wait to get back some day. I don't know whether I am more jealous of your Explorer 1 or the fact that you live in New York! :) Cheers, Carl
Nice pick up. I wear a BB36 everyday that I bought last year, before the new releases. I feel like you described it pretty well in saying that it isn’t a watch you buy to impress others, but one you buy for yourself (even though you were talking about the Rolex). Still though...I do kind of want the new one...what a weird hobby.
Just found this video, great job, and some of the most comprehensive footage of the watch on the wrist I've seen. You need to call Rolex and collect your commission check for all of the 124270 watches you sold for the Crown 😏

great video Tim! I am wait listed for this one here in Dxb! Any update is Rolex has started supply on the other 2021 models there in nyc or Usa as general.
Tim, Great review. It looks slightly bigger in size than the old 36mm. Can you do me a favour and measure the exact outside diameter without crown and the lug-to-lug size? I'd guess 37 and 43mm. Many thanks and keep up the good work!.
I wanted this watch but the dial just looks to plain IMO. That’s why I am on the waiting list for a 36 mm datejust blue dial. It is after all a matter of personal preference.
Hi Tim, new sub. I purchased 3 watches from my AD (in California) this year and requested the Explorer 124270. I had no idea ADs are already getting these in. Do you know if your AD is one of the first to get this model in and how many did they get so far or are all US ADs getting these in but it's a limited supply (e.g. 1-2/month for each AD)?
Yes, my AD gets it first because it’s the flagship store in NYC. Also I was the first person to request on in the store. Literally going to to store for the morning of the release store opening. But, the supply should open soon, by end of May.
@@TimWrite Thanks for addressing my question. I have a relationship with a small Rolex AD in the area so hopefully they will be getting them in soon. I have tried the boutiques and larger ADs in the area but they tend to be not as transparent, honest, and I refuse to play their games in order to get the watches I want. I have never purchased watches from the Grey Market but I can see why it makes sense for some folks. BTW I used to live in NYC and definitely miss the city at times. It would be great to get another review (long term) of the new explorer after you had it for a month or so.
