    Most of the time I wear my 114270 Explorer. Got it quite young, back in 2009, a present from mother. As a Catholic priest, I find it discrete and fitting, and it matches my cassock (which I wear literally all day, everyday) perfectly. I have some other watches, like my grandpa’s 1601 Datejust and a couple of other Rolexes, but I find myself almost always wearing the Explorer, both for all the reasons you also like yours, but also for the sentimental value and for the discretion. God bless!

      What most people don't like about modern ROLEX is the rehaut inscribed with ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX ... "vintage" are more classy as all pre-2006 Rolex watch still didn't have that!

    Great review Ash. I've been wearing mine daily for an entire year now and I'm just as chuffed with it as I was when I first picked it up. This really is a do it all watch and mines banged up with scratches from countless mountaineering trips. If anyone is considering getting one just do it. T-shirt, suit or in your outdoor gear. This little thing will see it all through.

    I tried on the 36mm and 39mm Explorer at a pre-owned dealer this week. My wrist is 6.75" and the 36mm feels significantly smaller. Its under the radar and versatile and suitable for the man at easy with himself. If you shop around and negotiate the 39mm can be got for mid 6k. If you dont you will be paying into the 7ks

    Excellent summary. I've had a similar experience. Bought a 16570 polar Explorer 2 and then 2 weeks later my AD called with the 124270 after only 2 months of waiting. I almost always wear the Explorer as a daily. The Explorer 2 goes on my other wrist when I'm at home....a little odd but at least it gets worn!

    I am seriously considering an Explorer 36 and am grateful for your video. I sold the 1978 GMT 1 which i'd had since my 18th birthday back in 1981 & bought a flawless 114270 with all paperwork, boxes etc for under £5k from a watch dealer in the UK. I had worn the GMT less & less over the last 10 years. When i got mine it was £350 & i wore it everywhere as a tool watch when few people knew what a Rolex was. The change of visibility of Rolex & their move towards bigger & more blingy models. Eventually other makers made similar looking models. I wore a vintage 34mm Junghans & CWC G10 lately. I have a 20cm wrist. This 36mm watch looks fine on my wrist. I appreciate the simplicity ( i love the 1016 but beyond my reach) & discretion of the watch. The versatility too : jeans & t-shirt, collar shirt & chinos or a suit, it looks fine. Loved this review / comparison. But never buy a watch as an investment & have few watches in your collection.

      @TheChapsGuide  ปีที่แล้ว

      A good lesson there sir. I have recently lost interest in Rolex and rarely wear mine now. I find the brand has become over-exposed and has suffered in reputation. I'm eyeing up CWC as my next potential watch purchase (or possibly Oris)

  • @BLR653
    @BLR653 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I wear my Exp 1 about 95% of the time. As the other poster said it is a collection killer. Very true. The thinness, lightness, low profile nature works in all situations. I’ve worn mine to work for almost 2 years now and not a single comment about it. Your GMT is going to get a LOT of attention.
    There is one other area this watch shines. The true sport watch. I used to wear my Explorer 2 for this purpose but this model is so friggin good (disseapears) under a ski glove that it is the default option for me now.
    The less is more design philosophy executed almost perfect.

    I have also had mine for a year and the biggest problem I have found is that I now hardly wear any of my other pieces. When I do wear something else I find myself missing the Explorer. Hi Ash, wondering if you could advise.
    So my AD was keeping me in line for a green OP36 for my 40th. However they've said it's very unlikely I'll get it in 18 months time at this rate. They've only had two in the shop in the past year.
    He's happy to put me down for the Explorer. And it's a watch i very much like too. I have a plain taste and prefer classy stark and simple watches ( in the past I've owned a Speedy, an IWC pilot mark 16 and Aqua Terra black inky dial from 2003 and was offered the 39mm Explorer which at the time unfortunately i couldn't justify buying, and have no regrets, as the 36mm watch is definitely what i would go for).
    So.... would you a) get the explorer b) wait for a green OP or overpay on secondary market or c) tudor pelagos 39mm which i really like too and would make a great sporty do it all piece.
    My current collection is just a G shock 5600e and a few cheap watches
    Thank you so much!

      Hi, thanks for the question - I may try and respond more fully in a video if I get the chance (I'm living in a tent for the next week, so things are tough to film responses) - but in short, the Rolex Explorer is the class winner in my opinion (I'm wearing one now!) - the OP is a bit of a novelty piece and has less versatility than the other pieces that you mentioned due to it's colour. They are uber popular right now - which generally means that they will see their popularity swing in the future. The Pelagos 39 is an amazing unit for the price - hard to argue against such a capable watch, it is the equal of the Rolex Sub in my opinion (and I own a Sub). But buy the Exp and stay on the list for the OP - winner, winner!

    • @Valera_Scotland
      @Valera_Scotland ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheChapsGuide please enjoy the tent times instead of responding to my silly questions ha ha!
      I think you are right. The other watches are distractions and I should stay true to my original course and just get the explorer... it will serve almost every purpose, and for very messy days I will always have my G shock...
      Enjoy your wild adventure. We're off to Holy Island for the day (I'm Scottish Borders based, so it's not too far)... if you've never been to the area, it's very nice
      I moved from Bristol which I also love (the south west is special).
      Have a good one Ash

    1:20. “I find myself attracted to the simplest of things….” I agree totally! More than any other in my watch collection, I wear my JLC Geophysic 1958. It’s kind of JLC’s equivalent of the Rolex Explorer. It’s 38.5mm, time-only, 100m water resistant, and perfect for any occasion. I just love that watch for all the reasons you do the Explorer.

  • @Claus-L.Mueller
    @Claus-L.Mueller ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi Ash!
    The new Explorer fits your wrist very well! I’m remembering your start in hunting it down nearly two years ago. And you were lucky to get it within half a year.
    I tried the new 36 several times now. And I have to be honest to myself - it is a bit too small for my taste. I’ve got a 7.28” inch wrist. And the fact it is actually only a 35mm watch makes it difficulty for me. I’ve got no issues with a Datejust 36 or the Black Bay 36.
    In 2016 I had the opportunity to pick a 39mm Explorer or the OP with the rhodium dial. I took the OP because I considered it to be the more interesting looking and versatile watch. Maybe it was a fault but maybe not. The OP is still in my collection and I wear it quite often.
    Regarding my personal taste, I would purchase the new black OP 41 or maybe 36 instead of an Explorer. I’m not a big fan of the Mercedes hand therefore I like the hands of the OP. And I think, the new OP watches have got the same clasp as the Explorer. So, the only downside of my older OP has been solved.
    Best regards,
    Claus

    I appreciate the inclusiveness of your review concerning sizing of watches to the size of one's wrist. The Explorer 36's size was a show-stopper for me and my 7.78 inch (200mm) wrist; Now that the Explorer 40 is in production, I can no longer complain about Rolex leaving me out...
    The way that Rolex pays attention to wearability, with the sculpted inside (or wrist-side) of their watches and bracelets, I think, sets them apart. I was noticing on a wearing test that the folding clasp was contoured and smooth, with not an edge to be found. Just poking a finger around from the other hand finds the inside smooth and amenable to comfort.

    Excellent review, Ash. I've owned my 124270 for 5 months now. It is one of those rare watches that is sporty, yet elegant. Simple, yet refined. Light on the wrist, yet robust. So easy to wear all day and night. Suitable for any occasion. And unlike other Rolex models, it flies under the radar. I love the way Rolex has executed the two-tone design. That being said, I'd also be content with the stainless steel version as it's more affordable. Hey Ash-great reviews. I got my 124270 just a couple months after you. It was running perfectly for me (less than +1 sec/day) for about 9 months, at which point I started losing time (as much as -8 sec/day). After some research on online forums, I discovered this seems to be a common defect in 32xx caliber models. Specifically, the watches run perfectly at first, but after 8 months to 1 year, they start losing time, running progressively slower and slower.
    Rolex has taken my watch back for servicing (for free under warranty), however it seems that many people have experienced the same sudden loss in accuracy, and it often recurs 8-12 months after servicing. I would be very curious whether you've experienced this also. Cheers!

      @@TheChapsGuide Thanks. The Rolex watchmakers on the forums speculate that it is a design defect which puts excess wear on the seconds wheel or pivot. I have several watches of rolexs, but once I put the explorer on its such a hit of dopamine.... it's an addicting watch. Luckily, I did not have to wait long for my watches. I made a good relationship with one of the associates and she never failed me. When the explorer got released, I got the call like two months later. I really think it's about the way you carry yourself and talk about the watches. It was very interesting to get calls and see people come into the rolex boutique and they see a young 25 year old getting the call while they have to spend thousands of dollars. PLEASE do not be one of those people. Be patient and if you can't go buy grey market. People will spend a boat load of money on stuff they dont want and end up paying more than just buying grey market. I was able to score a rolex sub date(1 month wait) no purchase history. Rolex explorer 2 polar(2 months wait), Rolex explorer 1(two months wait), Rolex gmt 2 batman(2 months wait). Anyone can do it if i can.

    Great video, Ash! I dont have an Explorer for now, but I do have a watch that I really
    love that fits into that niche for me. I have the Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80, which is simple, elegant, and well finished. The blue dial has real depth and plays beautifully with the light.

    Good morning Ash. Of all the watches of the Rolex brand the Explorer is my favourite of them all. It is the only one I would aspire to own. It is very understated as you said it could be a Seiko or a Orient also the Longines conquest is similar to the Explorer in style. Which I have thought of purchasing as a alternative to the Explorer.

    Wil I won’t I ? When released initially I was in picking up a piece from the dealer . Tried it on and thought even for a 36 it looked really small . I’m 6”3 and 7.5 wrist but I’m getting more enthused about smaller watches but still have a couple of 42 mm divers although most are 40 41 Rolex .. 37 .5 would be perfect for me but would 35 .5 feel too small ?

I have a nice speedy reduced with gold details from my dad which is v slim and 38/39mm which is as small as I’d go - I can see the appeal when I put it I forget it’s there. hello there Ash, new sub here... i can very much relate to your story on the explorer. i am lucky enough to know the owner of a small AD and was sold the batman and explorer at the same time last year. The situation was identical to yours. At first, all i wore was the gmt (I was in LOVE) and the explorer virtually got no wrist time at all, sitting at the bank. Few months pass and i reach for the explorer way way more. I love it's versatility and how it's easy to wear, very comfortable, simple, elegant and low key. Cheers!

  • @chrisgreen764

    A very good appraisal Ash.
    I have much the same taste in watches, although I dress far more casual.
    Although I have a number of watches, this 36mm is my daily go to wear. It's probably the most readable, apart my PP Calatrava, circa 1960.
    I also have a rhodium dial Yacht-master 40, using a rubber Tiffany blue strap. Beautiful, but it's not as clear to read.
    I think the best dive watch at the moment, is my Omega 300m. Blue with matching blue rubber strap. So easy to read, swimming in the Red Sea, where I live in Israel.
    If I only had a choice of one watch, it would either be my 36mm Date-just from 1980 or the newish Explorer 36.
    I like you enjoy the outside life, as I do, Ash.

    I always enjoy your videos on watches and fashion. This one on the 124270 36mm Rolex Explorer was very timely for me. Currently, my daily wearer is a Tudor Ranger M79950-0001 in 39mm. I am very interested in the newly released 40mm Explorer 224270 as a dressier occasion watch, but still acceptable in a business casual setting. I know you said you’ve chopped wood with yours, but I don’t see myself doing yard work with my first Rolex or even my Ranger on my wrist. I’ll reserve those wrist times for the Timex Expedition Camper. Thanks again for the first impressions on the new Explorer series, and keep the good content coming.

    @1:20 - 'I'm a simple man'. Not to put unneeded pressure on you, but I hazard to guess your personal clothing and accessories inventory is far from simple and looks like a mini version of Huntsman shop in London. 😉 I would describe you as a timeless/classic man who rejects 'fast-fashion'. Comment: You appear very intentional about what you choose to wear. @6:15 - I was not expecting the color of shoe laces and socks which speaks to a person who cares about what he wears and how it makes him feel. Thanks for reminding us clothes are much more than a covering.
