World's Busiest Railway 2015 1of4 BBC

  • Dan Snow, Anita Rani, and Robert Llewellyn examine the role the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai plays in long-distance travel across India. The country's rail passengers travel three million kms every day - that's the distance to the moon and back, four times.
Anita joins passengers on a long-distance sleeper across India, to discover who's travelling, what they pay for their tickets and what conditions are like on board.
The station team have just six hours to service trains after every journey. With trains measuring more than half-a-kilometre in length this is a gargantuan task. Robert joins the team to watch this turnaround in action.
Dan gets his hands dirty with the behind-the-scenes support teams who process more than 25,000 dirty sheets a day and ensure that everyone on board is fed and watered.
And we go on board one of India's poshest tourist trains, where you can travel like a maharaja at a cost of £600 per night.

24:42 makes me very happy as an Indian. That's a hardware / electronics data center. Not servers or racks, but electro-mechanical switches and mechanical relays. Steampunk genius. Of course, automation would make things easier, but then in India, nothing goes exactly to plan, so automation would fail to handle most of the unexpected edge cases.
I wonder what the maintenance schedules and failure rates for those wires and relays are.
Semiconductors work better because they last much longer than mechanical switches or relays at rated conditions (temperature, pressure, electrical load, environment).
If they have electrified everything, maybe an electronic signalling network with transmitters on the trains themselves, that provide real time data is possible, rather than relying on track-based switches which I presume need regular testing and inspection.
The good thing about this network is that it can withstand an EMP attack, which would probably fry a fully electronic sensor and wireless signalling network. But that's not an eventuality anybody wants tested!

30 years back, I used to go to Nariman Point Business District every day and used to do the rush hours. Once me and my friend decided, lets wake up 30 minutes early, go in opposite direction during rush hours and then sit in the train to go reverse, this way we would not have to enter with such a crazy way. 30 years back, it was no different. One thing i learned was, If i want to compete, I need to be different. Did so many education program, Left that race and moved abroad. Every time past 28 years i visited India, ensure to go to CST Terminal and have Wada Pav (Indian Burger) at the station. Love Mumbai.

Just adding a tip for any Indian or Mumbaikar watching this: See this video again as if it is about trains in some European country (Paris / Prague / Bucharest / Milan / Madrid /etc) Just substitute the names.
Doing this will show you you see how truly awesome it is. 5-10 million people a day in one city is no joke.
And it's 100% green transport. Because we live here we don't tend to value what is good about here.

Living in a Mumbai is mirage. People outside Mumbai think it's heaven. Only people from Mumbai knows real truth(But they will never say that). Even ants must be living better life.
Travelling by local train is none less than fighting on border. No guarantee that person will return home in a single piece. A small mistake can cost life. Now imagine you have to be 100% perfect, 365 days a year.
Wonder how come people can tolerate farts, bad breaths, sweat smell & other filthy smells once they get on board at the same time brushing their skin against others(who may be bearing some kind of skin disease either? :)
During monsoon the situation worsens, as trains comes to halt, people get down on tracks filled with 2-3 ft of water and walk towards their destinations while crushing poop laden slurry with their branded shoes.

As far as the train station - if it was as nice as the exterior (if it was clean) it would be an amazing building

Board from the rear, alight from the front. Same rules as on BEST buses.
The doors have a vertical bar in the middle. This divides your door into "front" (in the direction of travel) and "rear." People who are leaving the train, usually leave from the "front" of this bar and those boarding usually aim for the "rear."
I say 'usually' because there are always the newbies and other folks who don't get it! :-)
Been riding Mumbai suburban trains and buses since I was in 3rd standard...

Rural Americans become nauseous in crowds half as dense and I do not like heat either, so there's not a chance of my riding such a train. I need one full wing span minimum clearance at all times. Plus I like a clear path to a door in case of emergency.

I have travelled around 200 kilo meters hanging at the door on a regular train “east cost express” I believe back in 2000 . I was still doing my high school at the time . Also I had to climb a running bus (buses have ladders to get on to the roof ) and get on the roof everyday to get home from high school. 😂 I am thankful I survived .

man these british journalist are so hung up in crediting their colonial imperialistic ancestors for gifting the Indians with Railways... true... but they missed the point that British had built the Railways to wring India out of its wealth at the cost of oppressing the Indians. Now you may say that without British we may not have had Railways that has bolstered our country's economy... well... the chinese did it without any western influence... British rule has gifted India many things in disguise but their intention were almost never for the benefit of the Indians. Railways and Western Education were two of them.

Of course they didn't miss the point but what's the point of beating yourself for something your forefathers did, generations before you were born? I wouldn't expect you to say "I'm from India, where we used to throw widows on the funeral pyre with their deceased husband", or if you said "I'm from India, home of the curry", I wouldn't say "What, curry cooked on bonfires of deceased widows??!!" Let's all just move on. Peace :)

This jumping off the running train was completely normal in Berlin (and other parts of Germany), until the mid 2000s, when they phased out the commuter trains from the 1930s. The doors would close automatically, but you could open them again at any time. It was pretty common to leave them open in the summer too.
    ===> Berlin trains in the 90s: th-cam.com/video/t84jyXVW89g/w-d-xo.html
