  • Well, my little MS170 was acting up again, so I figured it's got to be the carburetor, right? Well, turns out, it was not the carb for once! The fuel line I replaced a couple years ago had a nasty little secret!

    Just wanted to thank you. This video helped me clean the carb in my MS180 that would bog and stall. I checked everything else before touching the carb, and all looked good.
    Runs like a champ now! 👍🏼👍🏼

    Your video was extremely informative. This will be my first time taking apart my MS 170. I am hoping to be able to learn how to fix it myself.
    Thank you!

    Don't you just love when you actually tell yourself what the problem is yet somehow still go off down a long and winding road of trouble shooting only to discover by accident what you already knew to begin with? Case in point, "Every time I store it the fuel disappears!" Several days later, "Oh, I see a split in the fuel line." lol I do this kind of thing all the time myself especially when I misplace stuff.

      Good observation John. However, the disappearing fuel act has been a trick this saw has been performing for years. By the way, there were about 5 comments posted before you.........you might be slipping lol!

      I don't mean it as it's always a direct correlation (but sometimes it is), like have you ever been looking for something misplaced and when you can't find it you start saying things like "I just had it! I always keep it in this drawer right here!" , and in those complaints of frustration you might actually be saying that you in fact DID just have the sought object and moved it OR (More often to me) it really IS right in said drawer just unseen, but you'll basically talk yourself out of it being there, or the notion that it's now missing is so strong that it will eclipse the act of searching the drawer better (even though you have said "I always keep it in this drawer!"), and so you'll look all around in other places still maintaining aloud where you always keep the object until finally you come back to that same drawer, and when you yank it open pissed off the contents shift and there is the missing object. lol it's a strange thing where the more you're certain where you left something, the deeper you convince yourself that's its not really there. - I've seen an odd phenomenon of trouble shooting prejudice too where someone will say what the problem is (likely out of instinct from working on the same things over and over), but for some reason manage to convince themselves it's something worse or entirely different which leads to tearing the whole thing apart only to put it back together and then go back to their original suspicion and find the problem. Yep, I'm losing my touch! lol I think Tech got here before me, but I watched some, then came back later too. Thanks

      Look up on youtube How to Remove the Alcohol from Gas video. During the winter I use my saws so don't have a problem but come spring I run my zero alcohol then before storage I drain the tanks and run the saws dry for storage. My saws start and run the next season.

    I know someone is going to bitch about me offering my relentless opinion on your audio quality. Quite frankly, your audio is just about perfect now. This one is very loud and pretty clear. There is still a little bit of over modulation at times, but I'm hearing VAST improvements over a couple of months ago. I'm pretty impressed and it really makes your videos easier to understand for "old ears" like I own.

    I actually had problem bogging down. It idled great . I actually took carb off then thought about something I put it back on and reached for my can of carb cleaner ! Wow ,sprayed in the carb while running and it shut down. Let it sit ran it up again but took a lot of pulls . Ran it up sprayed again and did a few times about 1 hour total let it sit between sprays. Well runs great not taking carb apart and it cleaned the varnish dirt that was in the jets ect ect.. try it!

    Ethanol kills you when you least expect it. My father and I found a station that sells their 91 Octane as Ethanol free. He and I buy a 5 gallon can for our power equipment. We dose it with a few ounces of Mavel Mystery Oil and split the container.

      Tech Gorilla makes good sense. Some guys even go to small air fields to buy their gasoline. I heard stihl is now insisting only their fuel be used under warranty.

    Hi from NZ. After getting harder to cold start my MS170 finally refused completely. Local repair man pointed to a couple of 170s on his shelf with the same problem. He explained that he had heard of faulty bearing seals causing lost crankcase pressure. Any ideas/info much appreciated.

    • @stevewatr
      @stevewatr  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never done crankshaft seals on a 170, but they aren't too expensive. I think you can verify bad seals with a leak down test.

    Nice video, Steve. I’ve had great success using 50:1 pre-mix fuel in my old Stihl saw. It is pricey, but I don’t use a lot of it and the saw runs great year after year.
    By the way, just FYI, the audio on this video is very distorted.

    Darn ethanol!... Odd that ethanol has been mandatory in Europe since the early 70s. I believer its something else in the fuel or another design problem...

    • @TheKrayusKorianis
      @TheKrayusKorianis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the MS 170-180 saws (1130 series), there are no cap vents. They use duckbill vents that only allow air in to equalize pressure in the fuel and oil tanks. They are located next to the fuel lines, closer to the cap but are "hidden" by the case.

    Did everything you said, saw still runs bad, check compression, muffler, exhaust ports, bought new card still didn't run right Ms 180 c

    • @stevewatr
      @stevewatr  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A compression test will not reveal a crankcase leak from bad crankshaft seals or other area like where the 2 halves of the crankcase go together. A leak down test will show this, but it requires a way to seal off the exhaust and intake. Then a small vacuum is applied to the impulse line. I'm having an issue with my ms290 that I belive is a leaking case. It wont idle and is hard to start. No amount of adjustment of the carburetor seems to work.

    Thanks for video. Stihl engineers claim to be the best, but in fact they are stupid and lazy. You should not have to disassemble things that much to replace a wear item like the fuel line. The same thing applies to the oil line which has to be replaced every few years. You have to disassemble half the saw to replace it also. Bad engineering by stupid lazy engineers. Shame on stihl for charging top dollar based on their name when they do stupid stuff like this.

      i cant agree with you. they engineer their product so the work is too complicate for some people to do. it is nothing new. plus the thing is so compact, everything has to have a place. if and when you get in to the professional line of saws, they generally tend to be a lot more field serviceable. because the people running them tend to be professionals, not backyard mechanics that throw Chinese parts on their saws. a properly maintained saw that runs Stihl oils and high test ethanol free fuel, and OEM parts (or professional parts) will not rot and fall apart. this is a home owner or residential saw, made for light duty work, so please dont expect it to have the duty cycle and field serviceability of the pro line. i do own a ms170, ms180 (home owner) as well as the ms261 and the ms461. i do all my service, so i speak from hands on experience

      yes. I notice this saws oiling system does not work very well, and as a result, the bar gets hot, expands, and the chain tightens up.

  • @andybecker2693

    A battery saw would be a better idea than a MS170 and would probably have more power without the fuel and carb issues. They don’t have an adjustable carb stock and have to be retrofitted with an aftermarket one. Don’t waste your time and money.

    • @TheKrayusKorianis
      @TheKrayusKorianis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No amount of battery powered equipment comes close to the power of a gasoline engine. The battery saw WILL stop cutting if the force to cut is greater than it's ability to actuate the servo motor. Gas however will cut and cut, no matter what, even with a dull chain. No, it isn't good for it, but it doesn't slow down and stop like a battery will. Also, cold weather, the battery saw won't even work as well unlike a gas saw, which will run always in any weather unless it's cold enough for gas to freeze.

    • @andybecker2693
      @andybecker2693 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheKrayusKorianis I was just talking about the 170 because there are better options than the 170 in “light duty homeowner saws”. I totally agree with you. I have three newer saws from 50cc to 70cc pro versions. Battery would never work on the farm.
