Two days ago I rebuild my old Russian weed eater's carburetor using your advice. I changed the diaphragm, also that thin rectangular membrane. Since the piston head was black, I had to remove carbon residues on the top of it. I had no special cleaning substances for that, so I had to improvise. I used sandpaper dipped in engine oil, then dry sandpaper, and at the end I polished the piston with a felt disk mounted in my drill machine, it surely looked better after that comparing to those small dimples left after the first stage of the cleaning. Today I put the engine back together. It starts very easy, works normally. I love it. Many thanks, Steve! ❤
I finally got my hitachi weed eater working off your primer installation video and after some new hoses and spark plug. I was thrilled to have it running after sitting for 7 years or so and then it died the next day. Watched this video, took it apart to this level, everything felt good so I cleaned it an reassembled and it’s running great again! Thank you!
Your video helped me get Sthil O44 running again. I've taken it to three different Sthil certified shops. None of them could get it running. They all said it was worn-out. I got a carb kit for it and now it runs perfect. Replacing the metering diaphragm is what it needed. Thanks!

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but a step ALOT of ppl miss is setting the needle valve lever. In most cases the end of the lever furthest away from the needle valve should be flush with carb chamber body. If too high will flood ...if too low will lack fuel flow.
Thank you so much, Steve for this video! Thanks to you, I’ve been getting my small engines running without taking them to the shop. While not identical to the one in the video, I cleaned & partially rebuilt the Zama in my Homelite SXL. It’s currently my only saw & I have to cut 35 cords of firewood every year for my parents & I. Oh, did the job with Busch Light. Not much in the flavor department, but I didn’t get all buzzed up & screw up the carb either. It’s s fine line!
My 10 year old Ryobi blower died so I got an aftermarket new carb for it. That didnt work, so I watched your videos again and swapped out the diaphragm and the meter, and voila! It lives again! Thanks for the good info Steve! It's running a bit fast, so back to watch your video on adjusting it!

Thanks for the video and instruction. Just did a partial re-build on a Stihl 023 chainsaw (Walbro WT 215 carb) using this video and it worked out great. The metering diaphragm did have a bit of a click to it. I don't do this often so I took lots of pictures as I went along to make sure I got things back together correctly. I also had to adjust the Low speed idle just a bit after getting things back together as I found there was too much fuel getting into the cylinder, causing my spark plug to get wet (flooded). A minor adjustment made all the difference. The chainsaw runs great now and I can sit it down and it keeps idling (yay). Love your videos and thanks again..
I watched this video a while ago just because I like Steve’s channel. However, I watched today since my Stihl chainsaw isn’t idling. It idles fine on half choke so I knew it was the carb. Thanks Steve! Dave from Connecticut…out.

I’m needing to head to the liquor store, get me the best 24 they got and drive up from Colwood (to somewhere around Nanaimo?) to deliver it in person to thank you for ALL the info you share! THANKS!
I picked up a Poulan trimmer that wasn't working and the screen had varnish on it. Cleaned it up and she purrs like a kitten. But I substituted Blue for a Canadian.
I have just found your you tube channel and I have been watching 2 of your videos and I can see you no what you’re talking about. Fantastic channel. Ray from 🇬🇧 Liverpool
lots of useful info in these. Been binge watching them all afternoon. Thanks! FS 250 has always been a hard starter. If it has an internal compression release, it is not working Now needs a half choke to run at full. Spark arrester? What about cleaning jets? CArb cleaner? So you prefer to exercise rather than seasonally put away drained?
Hey Steve, how's that brew? Yup, love this cutter. Thanks for the response and help. No, hadn't tried playing with the needles. This zama only has a low anyway. Spark resistor was fine. Not the problem, but the throttle cable seems to have stretched 1/8" as well. Need a new one but I shouldn't need to touch the throttle for start anyway? Noticed primer bulb in video is full. Mines not. Maybe now bigger issue. Jambed a wire down the main Walsh plug trying to clean it. Forced it into the main chamber.. Looks like my stupidity will now cost a new carb! Some sort of check valve under the Walsh? Any thoughts and any experience with a Hipa carb? $20 incl. Air filter and spark plug. Beat that. Thanks again
This is the only video this guy's made that really falls short. There's several other basic things that can be done at this point including pulling the idle and high speed adjustment screws and blasting them out with carb cleaner and poke a wire through the jet if there is one sand blow it out. If it's gummed up just replacing the diaphragms won't work.
Thank you for the very clear instructions in your video, just one question, will it be ok for me to drink Carling Black Label Supreme while I do the work?
Or you can just go on eBay, and buy a brand new carburetor. I bought one for my Stihl FS55 grass trimmer about a month ago, and it came with a new set of fuel lines, a new fuel filter, a new spark plug, two spare primer bulbs, both gaskets, and a new air filter, all for $11.98 with free shipping.
@osu67 Well, according to a quick internet search, Stihl carbs are made in China. Here's what www.b4usa.com says: STIHL Inc. Updated, July 13, 2016 by contributing editors. "Search America 1st" Always verify USA Origin Most of the STIHL products sold in the USA are made in Va. Beach, Virginia and a majority of the STIHL engines or “powerheads are built in the United States from domestic and foreign parts and components”. The carburetors are manufactured in China; STIHL purchased Zama Corporation, Ltd., Hong Kong, on December 31, 2008.
Lol I bought one. Ran like new! First yard, go to weed eat and it starts bogging down then locks up. Did it again. Had to finish the yard so went and bought a new weed eater, because I was tired of it. Come out the store and gas is pouring out of the weed eater. Apparently it got stuck open and was flooding the engine. Wound up fixing the original carb later.
Steve - I love your videos, they've got me pulling out old trimmers and chainsaws I gave up on years ago just to get them running again! I do have one question though - I have a pole chainsaw (Husqvarna 326P5 X-series) and I need to adjust the carb... should I follow the trimmer or chainsaw procedure? I'd guess the trimmer, but I'd like to be sure. I've got a Victoria Bitter and a local DuClaw's craft beer chilling just in case it gets complicated!
I just decided I'm "over" carbureted lawn equipment! I don't have any problem keeping "regular" carbs tuned and running right (I'm a trained and certified motorcycle mechanic), but for the life of me, I cannot keep this style carb running. I have a Ryobi leaf blower that starts and then shuts off right away, over and over and over again, and I have a Remington string trimmer that ran like an absolute champ with a brand-new Walbro carb on it a year ago, but now when I'm ready to use it, it also is a bear to start and won't idle. DONE! I'll keep my carbureted chainsaw, lawn mower and snowblower (for now), but from now on, as far as my other lawn equipment is concerned, it's batteries or bust! And yes, I only use ethanol-free fuel, and regarding my string trimmer, I drained the fuel and ran the carb dry when I stored it for the winter...
Awesome Videos Steve. You've helped me repair a machine that I would have had to replace. Thanks a lot from sunny South Africa. Keep up the good work Mate.
I happen to disagree. You said any beer would do, but I believe if you used a thicker beer let's say, Guinness as your repair beer it would likely wind up gumming up the idle jet in 3 to 5 tanks. Otherwise, spot-on!
Hey Steve, guess what your guidelines are still valuable until now! It works fantastic to have a "supple" once build in! And it works premium as well as mentioned with any kind of beer. I tried four different and all worked out pretty well. Cheers mate!
Hey, I discovered tonight this fix works with hard cider as well. Thanks for taking the time to post this. Weedeater is back up and running after only a few minutes.
Good approach is, in addition to this carb soft-parts kit instllation: do the fuel lines, the fuel-filter / pickup-tube, primer bulb, any gaskets that you damage removing the carb; and inspect: air filter and spark plug; be sure to clean the spark-arrestor screen carefully with a mapp / propane torch, and you shoud be good to go! I like to use original STIHL but I don't mind STENS. Do not discard your STIHL carburetor under any circumstance; the word on the street is to "NOT USE COMPRESSED AIR" on the carb body due to some damage that can occur to the mechanisms behind the welch plugs; With the STIHL gear, you cannot rule-out an intermittent coil-pack, either, so never assume that just because it is sparking, that is is OK, I have seen this a few times where the coil makes a weak spark or maybe out-of-time-spark (I don't know for sure), but make no assumptions that a spark is sufficient. If anyone else knows more about failure mechanisms of the coil-pack, please let me know; the new coil-pack has solid-state components onboard (such as rev-limiter) and these complicate diagnostics related to coil-pack.
👍Good stuff Sir Steve! I service my own but stopped servicing neighbors and friends due to by the time it gets to me for the fix the cylinder wall is scarred badly and basic junk. I’ve lost so much $$ on todays throwaways i tell them to go buy another $99 one. Of course the more expensive 2 cycle & 4 I’ll still work on however still can’t make anything to write home about. I do it to have some work w/ change in my pocket & to keep my good name out there in the neighborhood. Besides this… I enjoy helping folks out. 👍 Thx for the videos Steve. 🍺 🍻

I’m needing to head to the liquor store, get me the best 24 they got and drive up from Colwood (to somewhere around Nanaimo?) to deliver it in person to thank you for ALL the info you share! THANKS!
You're Welcome...
Lucky Lager?
Excellent. Came right here first off and there's the answer. Thanks for great vids! A beer for you Sir!
Thank You...
I picked up a Poulan trimmer that wasn't working and the screen had varnish on it. Cleaned it up and she purrs like a kitten. But I substituted Blue for a Canadian.
Right on ...
I have just found your you tube channel and I have been watching 2 of your videos and I can see you no what you’re talking about. Fantastic channel. Ray from 🇬🇧 Liverpool
Awesome! Thank you!
lots of useful info in these.
Awesome brushcutter! No comp release on that one. Did you try this. click-----> th-cam.com/video/gmhxTvGRtCg/w-d-xo.html
Amazing, Steve!!!!! My Stihl leaf blower revs up full for a few seconds and then drops in RPMs. I bet a simple carb kit would fix it. Thanks!
You're Welcome...
New sub here , Thanks for doing these videos . I am sure this will help a lot of people with their small engines . Keep up the good work !
Thank You...
Thank you for the tips, I drink Labatt Blue also !!
You're Welcome...
I don’t have one of these carbs, but I watched this anyway. You do such a great job of explaining the procedure, and the camera work is great.
Thank You...
Thank you for the very clear instructions in your video, just one question, will it be ok for me to drink Carling Black Label Supreme while I do the work?
Great demonstration on how to clean a 2 cycle carb thanks
can one of the tools to use be Captian Morgan vs beer......asking for a friend....lol great vid!!!
LOL, Right On....
Thanks man. Just took mine apart and metering diaphragm is crispy af.
You saved me a hundred bucks easily!
Glad I could help
Or you can just go on eBay, and buy a brand new carburetor. I bought one for my Stihl FS55 grass trimmer about a month ago, and it came with a new set of fuel lines, a new fuel filter, a new spark plug, two spare primer bulbs, both gaskets, and a new air filter, all for $11.98 with free shipping.
@osu67 Well, according to a quick internet search, Stihl carbs are made in China.
Here's what www.b4usa.com says:
STIHL Inc.
Updated, July 13, 2016 by contributing editors. "Search America 1st"
Always verify USA Origin
Most of the STIHL products sold in the USA are made in Va. Beach, Virginia
and a majority of the STIHL engines or “powerheads are built in the
United States from domestic and foreign parts and components”. The
carburetors are manufactured in China; STIHL purchased Zama Corporation, Ltd., Hong Kong, on December 31, 2008.
Great channel. I tell all my friends about it. I’ve learned quite a lot Thank You
Thank You...
Just a quick questio do all zamo carbs have both high and low adjustment screws?
No no
Thanks again. I just fixed my stihl fs45 again with the help of this video.
Nice work!
Definitely the trimmer procedure. MMMMMMMM Craft Beer.....
Problem I have seen is I purchase a rebuild kit for carb on an 8yr old chainsaw and the rebuild kit is 8yr old and dry and stiff .
Awesome Videos Steve. You've helped me repair a machine that I would have had to replace. Thanks a lot from sunny South Africa. Keep up the good work Mate.
Thank You...
Not even a minute into the video and I was off to the store. I had the right beer, just not the right size.
Right on Don...
Fantastic video. Going to do this on my weed eater. Thank you.
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
I happen to disagree. You said any beer would do, but I believe if you used a thicker beer let's say, Guinness as your repair beer it would likely wind up gumming up the idle jet in 3 to 5 tanks. Otherwise, spot-on!
LOL, right on Jon...
Guinness isn’t a beer.
Hey Steve, guess what your guidelines are still valuable until now! It works fantastic to have a "supple" once build in! And it works premium as well as mentioned with any kind of beer. I tried four different and all worked out pretty well. Cheers mate!
Right on
"Any beer will work for this job" awesome man lmao
Right on....
Hey, I discovered tonight this fix works with hard cider as well.
Thanks for taking the time to post this. Weedeater is back up and running after only a few minutes.
Good stuff!
The primer buttons should be soft as well. If they are hard and brittle they can leak.
.
What kind of person gives these videos thumbs down? Thanks for all the info and keep them coming.
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Hahahaha tools for the job
Labat blue, but any beer will work
Great help fixed mine in 15min and I'm not very mechanically inclined.
Right on
I order new carbs for 10$ online.
Jnl Jnl great if you can find one that matches. Some of these are extremely hard to find without💸💸💸💸💸
@@drizler alibaba .com generaly has any sthil carb available.
Thx for the videos Steve. 🍺 🍻
You are a gifted teacher and a true tech! Thank you
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Thanks. I just did this to my popular chainsaw wall to wt20 carb!
'Petrol'. That was for me. I'm your biggest British fan.
Right on
