The 2018 GRENKE Chess Classic is a 10-player round-robin held in Germany from 31 March to 9 April. The first 3 rounds are in Karlsruhe alongside the GRENKE Chess Open, then after a rest day the last 6 rounds are in the Kulturhaus LA8 in Baden-Baden. The field features World Champion Magnus Carlsen and fellow Top 10 players Fabiano Caruana, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Vishy Anand and Levon Aronian, as well as women's no. 1 Hou Yifan.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, then 50 minutes for 20 moves and then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. If players are tied for first place a rapid play-off will take place. Official website: www.grenkechessclassic.com

I want agadmator to narrate my life - "HELLO! here we have a standard Swedish opening where cooperblack rolls out of bed and vomits on the carpet, the usual response to this is to lay still but it seems he done his preparation and left the bedroom door open, But the opponent can easily counter this by moving his queen in the way... I wish I had pictures to show you but he's no Magnus Carlson.
So what's the idea here?
What happens if you grab the handle? Well if you accept the opening (of the door) and peer inside you will be met with the glare from his pet Rook and if you try to capture it you will get checked by your opponent. But, if you try to do this any other way you will get forked so first you need to expand on the Rook's wing-side and only then can you consider capturing.

he has answered this a few times before, and in his Q&A he recommended a bunch of different books, including books that discuss openings, but he thinks, like many top level players, that the endgame is more important than the opening. if you want to do a bunch of opening theory work, you can go to the st louis chess club youtube and look at their content on openings, gambits, etc, or you can get a more comprehensive study of the game in Capablanca's Chess Fundamentals. Not trying to be an asshole, just trying to help :) cheers

It would be interesting to revisit the game of Fischer-Najdorf where Fischer destroys Miguel Najdorf with white against the Najdorf Sicilian. It's because of that game I try to avoid the Najdorf as black. I do like the commentary on these current tournaments. Nice videos, as always.

Why so critical? Just because I don't like to play it doesn't mean you cant' or come down on me because I don't like it. Too many opportunities for white, in my opinion. And, it's just an opinion. I usually play Caro-Kann or Ruy Lopez against e4. I don't understand why people need to be so reactionary to quotes they see on the internet. it's just an opinion and playing style. nothing more. Chill out.
Fischer also played the Najdorf variation himself as black. Watch Fischer playing the Najdorf with Black and you'll start wanting to play the Najdorf yourself after seeing how he crushed everyone as black. He didn't just win as White against the Najdorf, he also won as Black WITH the Najdorf. It was in fact his all-time favorite opening.
@OrionP - I know, but what he did to Najdorf as white back in 1960 - just destroyed him with what seemed like pretty forced moves the whole game. It's just a personal preference, that's all.
It certainly is personal preference, you're correct. Najdorf is considered by any grandmaster you ask as Black's strongest reply to fight for advantage. (Win) and Fischer as black exclusively played the Najdorf. As long as his opponent allowed him to play it.. that is.-----. It's a dangerous opening for both sides, so it's understandable that if you're not into that. You could play more solid openings such as the Caro-Kann which was Anatoly "Boa Constrictor" Karpov's favorite reply as black.
Mr. Agadmator, it was due to your influence that I started playing Hearthstone. It reminds me of Magic the Gathering. It's a lot of fun.
i pref mtg, it has much more options to play. In hearthstone you have a few playable decks and everyone plays the same. Gets boring fast imo

For one reason or another I also mishandle the Najdorf maybe I don't understand it. The Dragon seems clearer to me and I have some nice wins with it. Clearer in terms of strategy and development. It can be complex tactically.

At 10:24 the queen can go to d8, even if the rook comes to e8, the queen captures pawn on d6 check. King moves to g8 to escape but the game goes on...
Could someone please explain to me why the knight cant be defended at 9:20? (Move 40?). It seems Qe2 gets the queen out of the pin, keeps 2 defenders on the knight and threatens a check on e8. As soon as Naiditsch gave up the knight the game was over. What am I missing here?
It seems to me that the black queen could take two pawns without losing pressure on the knight
It's not that the knight can't be defended but rather that any move that defends the knight results in a similar variation he showed at 9:00 where all the trades occur and black is able to gobble up a couple pawns with the queen and win the game from their with his abundance of past pawns.
White is still lost after Qxd5

Hi Agadmator, Thanks for these videos I enjoy them a lot. I have a question regarding this video, at move 31 (time stamp 6:46) why not black capture pawn on f5, instead Re3.
I believe both lines are playable for black, if rook takes on f5 Queen moves to d3, forces black to go queen d2 or pawn to g7 (the engine I checked with favored queen d2) both of which get responded with rook takes on f3, black is forced to trade or be placed in a worse position so rook takes on f3, queen takes on f3 and the game goes on, I don't have the greatest engine (just one on my phone that is built into an app) but as far as I can tell it's playable for black with a small edge to white, though it also gave trading rooms a small edge to white

Interesting that you say the knight is on a very nice square on e3, in the post game interview Carlsen said that knight was blocking whites natural development and was quote “extremely misplaced in my mind”.

I think Ne3 is good as long you keep the position "closed". After f5, it really hurted the dynamic of his pieces.

Was f5 not feasible if only to kick the light squared bishop of blacks back to d7 to then play Ncd5. Stops any d5 push and you can then look to push the G pawn as black cannot exchange through the position?

the guy played so scared ... if he gave up the knight before and moved rook e1 instead of of king g2 he could threat rook e8 and queen g4. carlsen wouldn't be grab the knight and king could run to h3 if needed with the help of knight moving to f2 if needed

Adrian Krueger pretty sure if knight e3 then black responds with knight f3 and there is no way to stop blacks knight from jumping to e5, so you're down a piece and black is winning. If you meant queen e3 this still loses to bishop to g5. If you meant after capturing the knight responding to bishop G5 with knight e3 I'm pretty sure that loses to rook E8, whites only response would have to be something like rook e1, which after queen e7 leaves white in a position that it will be down a piece. If I missed a move that fixes by all means let me know, but I'm pretty sure you don't have time to capture that knight without h4
