  • After many years of mild winters 2009 and 2010 saw West Sussex experienced heavy snow falls, giving the opportunity to witness scenes that many believed global warming may have banished for the foreseeable future. Armed with my video camera I set out to record some of the beautiful snow scenes in Bognor Regis and along the South Downs between Lavant and Pulborough. Already pretty villages looked stunning dressed in fresh snow.

Thank you Tim for these beautiful scenes. I was brought up in Horsham, and as a child only remember wearing a snow suit once! Living in Ontario, Canada now, so no lack of snow here in the Winter - but oh! what I'd give for a stroll down a West Sussex snowy lane, and to see those beautiful farm gates. Christine Weller

Hi Christine, snow is not a common occurrence in West Sussex, so I couldn't resist taking a day off work to record the event. I love to travel, but I'm always pleased to return to my home county, there are few places in the world as pretty as a typical Sussex village.

I love to travel, but the ride back from Gatwick, Heathrow or Victoria Station over the South Downs to the Sussex coast reminds me that I am lucky enough to live in beautiful part of the world .... the Arun Valley, Arundel Castle, Chichester Cathedral, Goodwood Racecourse and Motor Racing Circuit, all the picturesque villages .... travel has made me appreciate my home county .... Just Beautiful--yip that's a lot of snow. We never got that much in yrs. We got total 8 inches all winter so far. Everyone around us got more. It always missed us-but not the cold temps. Now we're under early drought and this week fire warnings. We need the rain but when it don't snow in winter then we will get severe weather in the spring. Then its tornado season and this yrs. Going to be bad I fear. You take great videos and pictures. Awesome. Thankyou for sharing the beauty. Safe travels ahead. God bless.

This year, there has been very little snow along the coast, but the North of the country hasn't been so lucky with deep snow causing a few problems. The weather you describe is a once in a lifetime occurrence here, so I guess we are pretty lucky. The only claim the town I live in can make is that it is the sunniest place in Britain, although not always the warmest. Britain does get plenty of rain and this happens - th-cam.com/video/wBWG33hgJ8Y/w-d-xo.html Best wishes. Tim.

West Sussex in Winter is about as different as one can get from a warm beach in Thailand, I'm pleased your friends enjoyed it, I don't think we'll be having a white Christmas this year .... Tim.

Hi, thanks for taking time to comment. As snow does not occur every year in these parts, I could not resist taking a day of work to record the event. Most of the pictures were taken along country lanes between Bury and Goodwood or around Bognor Regis .... Tim.

This is such a beautiful set of pictures and clips Tim. Though it makes me feel cold watching it...I like how the pictures close-in and pull-out, which i don't know if i have that facility on my Windows Live Movie Maker, or what it's called? Your choice of music is always impeccable, fits so well with this video. I wish you and your family a very Happy Christmas........Steve and Sharon.

Hi Steve, thank you for commenting. Live Movie Maker can pan and zoom photos...look under "Animations". Try the royalty free music available free from TH-cam under the "Creation Tools" tab....some of it is very good. I would also like to take the opportunity to wish You and Sharon a Merry Christmas and an enjoyable New Year......Tim and Karen.

When it snows everything looks magical and so clean, especially when the storm is over and the sky turns blue .... one of my favorite songs - Jeff Beck and Joss Stone - I'll put a spell on you - th-cam.com/video/DdIfeKIyYC0/w-d-xo.html ... I visited Niagara Falls in January 2010, I was one of just two tourists there to marvel at the frozen scene in front of me, one of the best moments of my life.

I visited Dartmoor once. I've been fascinated by it ever since I saw the Sherlock Holmes movie "The Hounds of the Baskervilles".

Pamela Short Dartmoor is a great place to visit on a sunny day, pretty rivers, stone-age bridges, quaint villages and Dartmoor Prison, but not a great place to be on a bleak winters day, especially if you can hear the hounds.

Oh wow, these photos are absolutely stunning!!!! I drive down to Bognor/Felpham from London every year for two weeks in August, so to see the county, and particularly the usually very sunny Bognor Regis looking like this is amazing! Great video :-)

Hi, snow is an unusual occurrence on the South Coast these days, so when it happened in two successive years I couldn't resist recording the events. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video and I'm looking forward to those long hot days of summer.

I just showed this to my Mum, she said this is absolutely lovely. She was evacuated to Felpham during part of the war, she saw some snow down there, but nothing on this scale!

Hi, I'm glad your Mum enjoyed it. Bognor Regis has changed a lot over the years, although Felpham is much as it was on my first visit over 50 years ago. As a child growing up in Sussex there was snow most winters, but it is a rare occurrence now. Extreme weather has hit the town on a number occasion, I have film and photos of hailstones the size of golf balls, the Lavant River flowing through the streets of Chichester and most of the land between there and Bognor, there was the hurricane that caused a massive amount of damage, not to mention rough seas breaking over the seafront and flooding parts of the town. I bet your mum has some interesting memories her time in Felpham.

      Thanks for your reply.
I said Mum - Any memories of Felpham and Bognor?
      Here they are:
      She was there 1944-1945.
On Christmas day 1944 the sea was completely frozen.
Scaffolding all along the coast - only allowed on the beaches after D-Day, after removal of the mines.
Army sentries along Sea Road (next to Canning Road).
      No Butlins, just empty land.
Celebrations in The George pub on VE night.
A VE party on the recreation ground in Flansham Lane.
The cinemas in Bognor - The Picterdrome which is still there and an Odeon which was onsite where the Regis Centre is and market (was!).
Butlins had a small amusement premises in Bognor on the opposite side to the Pier.
There was a Pavilion opposite the Pier where dances were held.
No GI’s down there but a lot of French Canadian troops.
Felpham Doctor’s surgery and house was opposite St Mary’s church.
The lovely sandy beaches have gone (although we understand the need for the stones).
Mine from childhood are limited as not much has changed - The lovely toy shop Gamleys in the High Street that closed, the monkeys at the little zoo that was in Hotham Park, and the Lobster Pot which I hope will remain there forever!
Hopefully the sun will be arriving for you soon!

Hi, they are some really interesting memories, I can just remember the sea freezing in 1963 and for a while my brother and his wife owned and ran the Lobster Pot, I think it is part of the fabric of Felpham. Your Mum's memories of the war years are fascinating, a reminder of what it was really like. In my younger days I enjoyed a few good evenings in the George. The first time I visited a cinema, I saw the "Sound of Music" at what was then the Odeon, now a bingo club. I used to enjoy nights out at the Rex Ballroom, I even saw Showaddywaddy there one evening. The pier was complete when my Grandmother took us to walk along it, she used to sit in the deck chairs around the bandstand in Hotham park, listening to the Chichester City Band.
There used to be a toy shop near the boating lake that was shaped to resemble Britain, I remember it because I bought a model yacht from the shop and spent hours sailing it on the boating lake.
Those sandy beaches were wonderful and when there was a storm the waves used to crash into the seawall and fly high into the air. The shingle does what it was intended to do, no more spectacular waves.
My parents used to take me to the zoo at Hotham Park and I used to take my children there, they love the little houses.
My memories don't stretch back quite as far as your mother's, but Bognor played a big part in my life, my first job was in one the factories on Durban Road, I couldn't afford a house in the village I lived in so I bought one in Bognor and I've lived in the town ever since.
Occasionally I fly with my brother from the old Lec airfield... please click on this link to see one of these flights th-cam.com/video/0J0GFJlVkZg/w-d-xo.html
I have a wealth of cine film, video and photographs taken around Bognor, I will get round to putting them all in a video one of these days.
Thanks for sharing the memories and say "Hi" to your Mum from me.

The Milankovitch Cycle causes the long term climate change. We are approaching the maximum tilt towards the sun in the summer and away in the winter. This gives warmer summers and colder winters.

Snow fall occurred most years when I was a child, now it is a once in ten year thing, so I make a special effort to capture it on video film when it happens.
