The Quest for England - A Look At Ferring in West Sussex

  • Today I have cycled to Ferring, an ancient village that dates back to the Saxon period. A farming community close to the sea with some wonderful houses old flint buildings.
The site of the village is an ancient one: the name itself is Saxon; it is mentioned in the Domesday Book; the parish church is Norman, and is dedicated to St Andrew. In the churchyard are buried the ashes of Major John Bigelow Dodge (1894-1960), veteran of the Great Escape of 1944, and there is a Commonwealth war grave of a Royal Sussex Regiment officer of World War II.

What a gorgeous village! Loved the cottage w/ the Wisteria on it & the huge Victorian!!!😍 When the lockdown is over you will have to come back & revisit the church so we can see the inside. As well, I want to see where that footpath would lead you too!!!🤗

Lovely little spot-it would indeed be lovely if all houses could be built to resemble the old ones-rather than the box like houses that exist-having said that, many have to live in inner city areas and those bungalows would be a dream home for many. Great stuff Richard.

As Ferring is my neighbouring village I know it well. As you say the old buildings are lovely and has a great community feeling. The house with the slate roof is actually a new build so it can be done! But of coourse it is a Conservation area. You probably walked past the memorial of the WW2 chap, not a grave but where his ashes are interred

Many thanks for this vlog Richard! I first discovered you through Sean James Cameron but, as a busy person, I didn't properly investigate what you do on TH-cam until recently when considering moving to either Worthing, Goring or Ferring. A TH-cam search for Worthing stuff and I discover a familiar face - IT'S YOU! 😀 So clearly nice people live in Worthing. But from that experience, perhaps collaborations with more TH-camrs might help boost your numbers? It's a thought. Thanks also for the Ilex Avenue walk! That's right opposite Fernhurst Drive where I was looking at the particulars of a house. Seems like a nice neighbourhood. All the best, David

I remember back in 1989 with a German girlfriend walking through South Ferring. The prices were so much cheaper than Worthing and at about a 60% discount to Sutton in Surrey. She asked if the prices were so cheap because the place may flood. The real reasonn as we know now was that nobody felt the country was full and overpopulated. How times change. South Ferring only has a limited amout of land, the roads are unadopted with no street lights and minimal population in one's living area is now the most important aspect of life. I live in Goring and it's pretty much the same. You can keep our town and live with the masses if you wish but I'd rather the quiet life. Great vid's Rick, keep them coming

The large Victorian house, I seem to recall was once ‘The Greystoke’ which was a hotel in the 70’s as I and my friends used to frequent it and the Henty Arms in our teens! That was where the action was in those days!

So the cottage by the church gate used to belong to the grave digger, the footpath across the road takes you about 50 yards to the glory of the football field, that barn there used to be home to Lucking's Theatrical Movers, can't remember what that big house used to be but the old "manor house", Ferring Grange, burnt down in the 1950's I think, bits still survive, you could see the old chimney stacks. The old school survived the war, my dad went there and it had a bomb shelter. I think it closed late 50's,early 60's...…. Across from the war memorial used to be Cooper's Garage as in the famous John Cooper. There are some lovely old flint cottages down Sea Lane, my best man lives in one of them! The local village Bobby had a house and office nearer to the railway and the village green we generally didn't play on as kids as it was covered in dog, erm, stuff. Nice video stirring many memories :)

So what about doing one from Ferring towards Littlehampton - sea views to left and seaside houses to the right and no road (as far as I can see in Google Street View). Best wishes.

I don’t know the old church area of Ferring. I will have to explore it, and walk up that footpath, upon the lockdown being lifted. I suspect the pipe was a communal water tap/pump but I can’t find any reference to it online. The Old Barn is now valued at £950,000! 🤭

I'll stick my historic oar in here and say that Ferring in the 13th century was owned as with other vast areas of the south coast
by the bishop of Chichester. He was fined by King John for abusing some tenants at Ferring. I must point out John did a lot of
this sort of thing a lot of the time without testimony. Judicial penalties have always been good for royal coffers.
