Realism nowadays is just so easy to achieve in games to the point where some devs are just going back to stylization. And I, for one, welcome this change.
I agree with your first statement, but the popularity it gained is to be expected by an experimental game with small budget. The biggest obstacles for an average consumer were the combat system which makes your moves limited (but has an upside of watching your character walk spectacular) and complex storytelling that almost requires you to play the game more than once or read the wikis to fully apreciate it (at least, that's how it was for me). Also, the steam version (which I REALLY recommend for new players) has 96% positive reviews from 1271 overall. So is it really misunderstood?

Like people are saying in the comments, it’s sad there aren’t that many game now with these kinds of original and crazy styles and they are now becoming too realistic, wish there were more games like thus
I remember this back then as a kid. Playing this game is a lil bit scary because of the enemy looks bizzare. But I actually dropped this game because how frustrating it is. I dunno where to go and what to do because of so minimal hint.
So, I came from Steam and found out this just released on the platform yesterday. Dunno if I should get it, though, I'm just REEEEEAAAALY confused and skeptical about it's gameplay design. It looks weird and bizarre enough to be one of those games that you'd touch once and never again... but at the same time, the arcade-style reaction based shooting reflects heavily of Resident Evil 4, which I assume was a big part in this game's design. Maybe I should try the Gamecube version first, unless the Steam version uses the mouse to aim rather than the joystick. That would help in becoming the deal breaker. Can anyone give me their opinions about this?
The gameplay IS weird and awkard at first, but you eventually grow to love it. Using each of the characters special guns, learning in which situations to use them, levelling them up and getting those SICC critical hits makes the combat fun and varied. It's not as awkard or clunky as it looks.
@@bombabombom3603 can't really speak about it. I've heard that it's okay apart from the launcher that looks like it was made in 2005 and poor advertisement. Check the reviews. I'm playing the GC version right now.

If you are into being challenged and learning in uncomfortable situations, try this game. If not, maaaaybe try it anyhow but you probably won't dig it.
I wonder why didn't they port this game to Wii, it looks just tailor made for it. Was it because controlling the reticle with wiimote would make the game too easy? The way Wii version RE4 turned into a total cakewalk, even on pro difficulty.
seriously can't find any good reason behind the MC pose like... he's posing as if he has a heavy sword he's not even touching his shoulder just awkwardly lifting on the back of his head.
Does there have to be a reason besides it looking cool? Obviously characters in this game don't handle guns very realistically, but it's all part of the game's unique visual aesthetic. Everything from the visuals to the way characters behave is extremely stylized. Alternatively, you could argue that Dan and Coyote holding their guns in such an impractical way is evidence of just how hardcore/skilled they are. Obviously in real life sprinting down a hallway while holding a revolver _right_ next to your head with your finger on the trigger and with the safety off is a bad idea, but Dan is just _that_ dexterous that it's not a problem for him.
