The AI artifacts always makes me think of pixels as living things that are constantly shuffling around trying to represent what was meant to be. It's not an A, it's a living thing that gets in position every frame to form and present you an A.
to this day, Ulmeyda as a smile causes fear in me. not even talking about his obviously scary boss fight. but just seeing him look "normal" but emanate such malice with a sick smile
I was so excited to replay this game and do killer8 mode after seeing the update, too... Feels like a monkey's paw, get all the QOL but also get poorly done AI upscaled cutscenes.
yeah, I'm extremely skeptical about the quality of the upscaled textures specially, I personally haven't booted the game to check them out yet, but I can't help but to expect the worse when it comes to the few posters scattered throughout the game, the second part of sunset and smile had some more heavy environmental story telling and I wonder about the damage there.
I also think the reaction from the fans is so exaggerated. Sure, the upscale is not perfect, but newcomers will still appreciate the crisper image over the very blurry original videos stretched to HD resolution. Maybe they should include an option in the menu to switch between original and upscaled to avoid the moaning from some of these 'fans'
There IS an option in the menu to put back the original cutscenes, but for some reason when I do that. Everything looks way too small, so I am stuck with the weird ai version, some don't look so bad. BUT ALL of the handsome men cutscene look horrible in many shoots, I wonder why it looks so bad compared to the rest
quality is a roll of the dice considering they didn't cleanup. I haven't booted the game yet, I'm unsure if there's an option to get the textures back as well, it ruined Almeyda's figure card
I think most of it looks okay, but there are some trouble spots... -I think the Matsuken shot at 26:54 kind messes up the edge of his face as if he has another face starting to grow off of it -The news report cutscene near the start of Alter Ego 15:20 has really odd looking vehicles and people that dont blend in with the scene the way they did before I wonder if anyone else could timestamp the biggest trouble spots they noticed.
the problems with it are: That it's not optional, the simplest of toggles would suffice. They ran it through AI and didn't cleanup anything. It's not hard to find issues, skimming through it: News report cutscene has the TV numbers, specially 'B'(red one), morph every frame. 15:20 That also goes for most of the text that's not big, you could make out what they said before but now it's just morphing glyphs. 6:20 16:25 1:45 Uses a distant smudge on the island's city, it comes out with tons or artifact on AI 3:25 is a good example of very low res un-aliased lines being upscaled to high res un-aliased lines, it happens a lot with characters mouths as well like at 18:00 17:40 I'm unsure why, but it messes up the anime styled eyes all characters 19:20 and 23:50 whole cutscene looks straight awful They also used AI to upscale textures, so there's this: i.imgur.com/exbFalm.jpeg I'll say Ulmeyda's cutscenes are the ones that upscaled the nicest, but that's coincidence and not merit of their work, since well, on the cutscenes at least there was none. I doubt they'll do it, but I hope for a simple toggle, like the language one that always pops up when you start the game, can't go wrong there, everyone can have their preference without needing to go after modding guides.
I too despise the use of Ai in art ( even though I think upscaling-ai is the least problematic of all ai tools), but this review-bombing campaign is absolutely nonesensical. Gamers new to Suda 51 are gonna see the "mostly negative" tag and think this game is bad, and considering how the game's reputation was already damaged by outsiders who see it as nothing but a "funny meme game", this is pretty horrendous. Besides, I remember how fans complained that the FMV cutscenes remained in standard definition when the port first came out.
I wonder if there are any copies of the original movies still around, or if they just got rid of the original animations when the job was done? I mean it was like 20 years ago now or whatever so, maybe, maybe not
@e.e.mccutcheon979 It was outsourced to Xebec and digital frontier so someone from grasshopper/NIS America/Capcom would have to get in touch with them. I doubt it though, back then there was little interest in preserving things like these.
@annietmood I wish, there is a guide on steam on how to replace the video files with gamecube's, so at the very least there's that. which come to think, NIS America has their work cut out for them, they should just follow that guide and release it.
i saw this, got so hyped and jumped for joy, and then cried all night after i saw the ai upscale

handsome men not lookin so handsome anymore 😿

:(. They didn't have to ai upscale the cutscenes.
What are you implying??

3:25 is a good example of very low res un-aliased lines being upscaled to high res un-aliased lines, it happens a lot with characters mouths as well like at 18:00
17:40 I'm unsure why, but it messes up the anime styled eyes all characters
19:20 and 23:50 whole cutscene looks straight awful
They also used AI to upscale textures, so there's this:

@@mosskoi Thanks for these timestamps. That's exactly what I was looking for. I hope they fix things up.
@@mosskoi The explosions at the end are the worst.

I thought they only ported the GameCube version of the FMVs. I didn't know they AI upscaled them.

well, I guess new players will have to revert to a previous version in order to play a version with less awful cutscenes.
Thankfully someone modded the non-AI'd Gamecube FMVs back into the new build, it's up on the Steam forums
There was no need for this AI nonsense.
so bad
