I saw/heard Peter Pears live at the RFH. I like this version.

What was it like hearing Pears like? And how big was his voice / how did it carry in the hall?

@@williamgoforth3572 It filled the hall I remember and it must have made an impact on me or else I would not have remembered the performance. I vividly remember him standing in front of the orchestra, making a big physical effort, as if he found it hard to release the forces within him. I am biased against Pears because I think he directed BB away from instrumental music towards opera, written to suit Pears' voice, which was not the greatest (cp Bostridge himself, Gerard Findlay, Thomas Hampson all have less constrained voices in my amateur opinion). I love the Turning of the Screw because it is so anal and repressed but best of all is Britten's chamber music and he wrote so little. Blah, blah, blah but maybe Pears saved Britten from himself.

In my opinion, this tenor singing the part with the “whirlwinds” is favoured

OK, I was weaned on the Pears recording. I am a tenor who sings much of the same repertoire as Bostridge. I just find I don't find listening to him pleasurable - his style isn't to my taste and this performance is no exception.
There's an affection to him that distracts me from the music...
