Ian Bostridge a su donner à ce chef-d'oeuvre toute sa dimension tragique, presque mystique
Quand au Lied en lui même ! Sublime !
"Und weint, als wollt' er schnell vor Gram erblinden"...Comment ne pas s'en émouvoir aux larmes ?

This is from the Voices of Our Time DVD (2004). During a recent public talk in Luxembourg a member of the audience asked Bostridge if he ever had to sing bad lyrics. After a little prevarication he conceded: 'Actually, yes. There's a poem by Matthaus von Collin called "Der Zwerg" (a brief synopsis followed), which is an awful dirge shoddily put together... it's rubbish, really. But the music rescues it fully.' Doesn't it just.

Exactly. This poem is really bad, the Syntax is unlogical and nothing compared to Goethe or Heine. The same bad quality you can see with the poems by Wilhelm Müller (Winterreise and Schöne Müllerin) which only and only Schubert’s Genius could save from being completely forgotten.
Der Zwerg is one of Schubert‘s best and vocally most difficult songs. There are some similar with texts by Goethe which are complete masterpieces, Erlkönig and Willkommen und Abschied, amongst others, like Wandrers Nachtlied and the very short one, Meeres Stille.

Matthäus Casimir von Collin - Der Zwerg has striking similarities to Oscar Wilde's - the birthday of the infanta (later adapted by Zemlinsky into an opera called "Der Zwerg") so the question is was Oscar Wilde inspired by Matthäus Casimir von Collin? Or is it just a coincidence?

Très bonne interprétation. Ian Bostrige me fait beaucoup penser vocalement à David Miller d 'Il Divo . Tous les deux sont entre ténor et contre ténor, je dirais. Ca dépend des notes et des airs

el bajo de la canción es el tema de la sinfonía inacabada . ¿ Es la muerte ? ¿ la fealdad que mata la belleza ? . Nunca lo sabremos

I think Ian Bostridge specializes in baroque singing.

Well said: I entirely agree. This tenor is grossly over-rated!

@@ColonelFredPuntridge Does he? I don't think he is good enough to specialise in anything. He has a grossly over-rated, rasping tenor voice, which I turn off every time it inflicts itself on my radio!

    • @ColonelFredPuntridge

@@SimonSimon-rn3tm Oh, yes, I hate him too. I'm just saying: a lot of baroque tenors do that annoying straight-tone thing he does, it's part of the standard technique for pre-Bach vocal music, and it's especially annoying when they do it while singing later music. It drives me absolutely crazy when someone sings, for instance, "Dalla sua pace," or any of Schubert's songs, as if it were part of something by a Renaissance guy like Henry Purcell or Michael Praetorius or Josquin des Pres.
But please don't imagine I'm making excuses or saying you ought to like him. I'd rather listen to almost any other singer.
