...Thank you so much ... there are lots of us out here who long for that same thing , that same feeling, that same state of mind, that same world situation, that same old thing that I guess we thought would go on forever. It did not go on forever, but we still can listen to a song like this and for a fleeting moment, for just a bit we can remember and ... then it is gone... thanks for putting this up.
As I near 50, I have many regrets from my life. One of my largest is not just picking up and following The Dead in the 80s. My life would probably not be much better these days. But it surely would not be much worse, and all those years would certainly have been much happier. Damn shame :(
Jerry ... he could have done anything and like a good hippie he was all, these stoners are my friends, we're in a band together, so what if I'm better than them, let's get high and go on tour for 40 years. And it killed him. God I love that guy, that's Leo loyalty.
Dedicated to my grandpa, who went to his grave thinking he never painted his masterpiece. Grandpa, I have one of your paintings on my wall, it is THE materpiece to me! Live on over the sun, grandpa! Love you, rest in sweet peace!
I agree with you 100%. I recorded this on vhs as well, and Masterpiece on this show was/and still is my favorite version. Westwood 1 also was airing it on the radio, so I got on audio and video.
You got that right about Leo loyalty...Even if it kills us or gets us arrested, we will lay ourselves down for others...Sometimes, people take advantage of Leo Loyalty
I love the Grateful Dead and JGB. It is really amazing how old Jerry looks for his chronological age-he has to be 46/47 here. Was it the diabetes, smoking cigs, hard drugs, or all the above. Damn do I miss that man.
My bud and I were dosed at my parent's house watching on pay-per-view, for some reason my dad decided he had to screw around with the TV sound but he gave up I guess because we were just grooving but it was sketchy for us for a while. Jeez I miss Jerry. Was at ~75 shows from 1981 - 1995.
True, Jerry forgot his lines sometimes , but not as much as Bob Weir when he sang "Promised Land" I don't know what it was about that song, but i saw him forget words and even switch verses around many times!
Yup, Jerry forgot his lines once in awhile, and the songs changed, and that's why the Dead had "Shows" while other rock bands had "concerts." Say what you like about Jerry and his band, they WERE the hardest working band in the history of music. They worked their ASSES off. And the results, as far as I can tell, are some absolutely fantastic music.
I'm not that familiar with this song only being a minor fan of the Dead and not a head. But I know enough that many of their songs are very thoughtfully written, and they always have unique chord structures that you don't often hear. It often takes many listens to finally "grok" them, and I guess a little tab on the tongue helps.
Oh, the streets of Rome are filled with rubble, ancient footprints are everywhere. Well you could almost think that you’re seein’ double On a cold, dark night on the Spanish Stairs. Got to hurry on back to my hotel room Where I’ve got me a date with Botticelli’s niece She promised that she’d be right there with me, when I paint My Masterpiece Oh, the hours I’ve spent, inside the Coliseum, dodging lions and wastin’ time. Oh, those mighty kings of the jungle, I could hardly stand to see ’em But it sure has been a long, hard climb Train wheels runnin’ through the back of my memory Where I ran on the hilltop following a pack of wild geese. Someday, life will be Sweet like a rhapsody, When I paint ~ My Masterpiece I left Rome and landed in Brussels On a plane ride so bumpy that I almost cried. Clergymen in uniform, young girls pullin’ muscles Everyone was there to greet me when I stepped inside Newspapermen eating candy, had to be held down by big police. wtf. That's live music folks. It's not meant to be studio perfect. Little things are what made the Dead soooooooooo great. just flow with it and it'll take ya somewhere.....................
@GratefulDead4386 U guys are bone heads to the max...he wasn't mad at him...everyone knows, much less his band mates, that Jerry forgets lines etc and off key all the time...geez, thats part of what made them great
I dunno -- I think that might have been a "man-I'm-enjoying-this" head shake as opposed to a "fuck-you-Jerry" head shake of disapproval... I don't think Jerry was anymore out of tune on that line than Bobby was on the rest of the song (not a dig at the musicianship or anything, its part of the sound)

Caught a reoomate singing "someday life will be sweet like a rap CD" once roflmao
Also I think the Band version of this song is the best -- better than the original Dylan version I think
Well, it had been a long hard climb.
