Jerry absolutely loved playing this song... I'll never forget him playing it in Portland Oregon on that last tour...in 95...he had this huge smile on his face... I was right down front... spellbinding...
Saw them jam So many times…. This is a fantastic color of this song. Their Live version of Knocking on Heaven’s Door In Pittsburgh Pa in ‘87 is one of my favorites ever- RIP Jerry❤️🫶
@@MrTravis789 hahaha yes I’ve heard that! Supposedly Jerry & Bobby were excitedly asking if they could do all these old Dylan tunes that he didn’t remember and didn’t wanna play. Must’ve been a funny scene
would’ve only been possible for a solid two years. all in wildly different directions at that point. it would’ve been the best thing we’ve ever heard though….
@@MrTravis789 I saw the Dead with Dylan twice in the Bay Area. What I learned was that Dylan is not a great singer (surprise surprise) but a really superb guitarist - once he gets warmed up Iwhich took awhile!). They totally "clicked" once he got in the groove. So your story meshes with my experience.
respectfully... I actually think this song was exactly what the Dead were about....simply an original and unique effort....every time. I could only wish to do the same...every time. Long live the Dead...and long live All along the Watchtower!!
I was at that show. It was great. Met a happy hippy chick Apple (sweet) and danced the night away to blissful harmony. Great memories trippin with the Dead and family. Nice.
I think a lot of people mistakenly believe that they are covering Hendrix, being ignorant of the fact that this, like so many of the iconic hits of the 60's, was written by the incomparable Bob Dylan but yes I agree and it is exactly the reason for the afore mentioned confusion about original artist
I AM 100% DEADHEAD TILL DEATH however if you have never heard The Dave Matthew's Band redefine what a cover of this Dylan classic can be, you are missing out. Make no mistakes I am a Deadhead not a DMB fanatic but OMG nobody does that song the way DMB does😅 NOBODY
My first Watchtower. It was always my favorite build up song out of Drums… Hoping for the Morning Dew to follow. If you dig the Dead playing this song, listen to the Salt Lake City 1987. Blistering.
@comicbookcolors you nailed it! I totally agree. Jerry is amazing on this song and every song. Why do people always compare or make a competition in music, instead of just enjoying.
Rough or not it is at least faithful and I find it quite nice. One of the things I appreciate of the Dead's Dylan covers is their respect of the lyrics. As his Bobness said "I'll know my song well before I start singing". Not all respect that. The Dead do. And to me this is essential, because Bob-texts are to be respected. The frog
Garcia's greatness is his soul and his unique tone. What other guitar great pulled it off live for so many years with a sound that changed over time? Certainly not Clapton! What live show did he tear the walls down? As far as Hendrix, he was a blues legend. Garcia played it all and cannot be pinned down to any school- as per Bob Dylan. Good luck to anyone trying to be the next Jerry Garcia. Way easier to be the next Clapton.
its late "80's" and he's playin "WOLF" doesnt that mean anything? maybe not.. i guess its just me that appreciate the fact he is playin AATWT on wolf...
Lol the Dead loved Dylan's work and vice versa. He was one of the only people invited to Jerry's funeral btw. Why argue anyway?!?! Every version of this song is angelic!! ~Nothing wrong, it's just the world~
1989 rocked and rolled and then some! I had a chance to go to these shows, but unfortunately, I did the mature responsible thing and went to work, Bad choice huh! Orfnob you know what Ii'm talkin about don't you?
I gotta go with the Travis Bean myself. Jerry didn't use it very often but man, when he did use it, that's some of the best guitar work you'll get out of Jerry
Brent is absolutely sizzling after 4 min. and that's another dimension entirely.... and a dimension entirely absent anyone else including Jimmy, Dylan, live, studio or whatever
At least Jerry gave us 24 or 25 more years of great music than Jimi did. The sound quality on this recording isn't the best, but shame on anyone that thinks Jerry wasn't a great guitar player. You can't compare Jimi to anyone, just like you can't compare Jerry to anyone, just enjoy! Or turn it off if you don't like it.
I Love Brent i don't even hear jerry or anyone else accept Brent !!!!!!!!!!!!so there should be no argues about anything about Jimi/ Jerry controversy !!
this performance is pretty good...not as good as the 7/4/1989 orchard park performance of Watch Tower though...on that video you'll find it at 2:05:50...yeah that performance is killer, the best i've seen the dead do...jerry's solo just burns and not a clam note there. Bob's vocal is great and the mix is perfect...better than this shoreline version, which isn't bad at all...
I'm not even a Dave Mathews fan..and I don't care what anyone else types. He did this song the most justice and built up the most tension with respect to the songs actual message
I like this cover, doubt Hendrix or Dylan would have any problems with it and also miss Jerry... but appreciate that there's plenty of his tunes out there for my listening pleasure. Dave Mason also does this song justice with his version.
Yeah! Like, I mean, really, like, awesome comment maaaan?!! Maybe, when you reach puberty and your grasp of the English language is a little more advanced, we can discuss the merits or otherwise of the Dead's take on this great song. Until then, like err!! "Whatever" dude!!
I agree with you naysayers that Bob's vocals on this version suck, but please don't criticize Garcia. The man played HUNDREDS of different songs, from different genres, in a myriad of ways. Was he a little sloppy at times, yes, but he played with as much skill and MORE emotion than anyone who ever played the instrument. Who has a volume of work as long and varied as his? No one!
Arguing over which band did the best cover of another artist's tune is really pretty stupid. Almost as stupid as the idea of arguing music opinion in the first place...
I wonder if you ever had a thing for old-school folk music -- the Child ballads, the stuff Alan Lomax recorded, and that Jean Richie, the late Oscar Brand, Richard Dyer-Bennet, Woody Guthrie, Odetta, etcetc, started up, and that then got big with the likes of Pete Seeger and the Kingston Trio, the Weavers, Dylan and Baez, Peter, Paul and Mary, etc? The Dead are integral to so many different musical traditions -- psychedelia, rock, jazz, blues, americana -- and started a couple new ones, but originally, ultimately, and always, to me they were first and foremost a buncha folkies who wound up widening their horizons. If you were never a folk-music fan, that might explain why the Dead never did it for you. They're not for everyone; different strokes and all that...
The BEST band in all the land!
Jerry absolutely loved playing this song...

I love that you said “color” of this song!
So much more than a simple cover! ✌🏼
Imagine if Dylan, Garcia and Hendrix ever performed this together...
when Dylan played with the dead, jerry said he found himself in the unique, unenviable position of trying to teach dylan his own songs.

MISS JERRY AND BRENT
I was at that show. It was great. Met a happy hippy chick Apple (sweet) and danced the night away to blissful harmony. Great memories trippin with the Dead and family. Nice.
Everyone is so on for this, what a great performance.
The Dead and Dave did amazing covers of this song!!!!
I have not seen this before until tonight.
Where have I been?
I second the WOW....WOW!
Best cover of AATW I have heard. Jerry is shredding, and Brent's solo adds colour.
Thanks.
Actually I think the Hendrix version is the best cover of AATW, but you're entitled to your opinion.

Nah you gotta be on Acid
@@nikzar9889 you're silly. Its not ALL about the drugs

My first Watchtower.

Such a long time to be gone ,. & A short time to be there
Short shorts and the Wolf, God I miss the Grateful Dead in all of it's glory!
Top 5 GD live song experience. I was blown away! 😎😁❤
What a great version of this song bye the Dead!!
@comicbookcolors you nailed it! I totally agree. Jerry is amazing on this song and every song. Why do people always compare or make a competition in music, instead of just enjoying.
the mix is perfect. nice.
Jerry on the Wolf. 1989 Rocks!!!!
@stoneydog1000 The song is just a great song. I love this version. This ain't a sport people.
Am I the only one 3:15 best part of the song
You, I like you. A great way to put it. Thank god there is someone besides 10 year olds complaining about this song.
Rough or not it is at least faithful and I find it quite nice. One of the things I appreciate of the Dead's Dylan covers is their respect of the lyrics. Yeah, Joan Baez murdered Night they Drove Dixie Down. I still like the band better regardless of weather she changed the words or not
Helps that there aren’t words for weir to flub. To be clear I love weir and his vocal stumbled
The best cover ever made
Very enjoyable!
The Wolf will always be my favorite Jerry shows.
love this version ... never knew about it ! November 30 .2013.
but why did you cut the end .
Wow!!!!!
Awesome 😎
#IWasThere!
Holy fucking fuck, Jerry really rocked this one.
Se nota la herencia española en la manera de enganchar la guitarra.España siempre.
When Garcia died I went to the Sierra next day and climbed Mt. Morgan then hike up to the Palisade glacier. Good stuff.
Jerry brings out his old Guitar from 72', & Bob with a Brand new Black Fennder.
love the guitar jerry bring it back!
dylan and the Dead.
legends.
Damn I had a good🍒time in 89'! Hard to believe that this was 30 yrs ago...👣GBTD
Brent is so smoooooooth
i personally though Watchtower was a great vehicle for Garcia to shred.. just goes to show, different strokes

Wolf was brought back in the late 80's to experiment with MIDI
totally agree
killer baseline

trippin' good vibrations!
Thanks everybody
Every axeman and group give this tune a different flavor...
I miss you bro
What is with the mix here? Sounds like Jerry is playing in a different area code
1989 rocked and rolled and then some! I had a chance to go to these shows, but unfortunately, I did the mature responsible thing and went to work, Bad choice huh! Orfnob you know what Ii'm talkin about don't you?
The Wolf will always be Jerry's best guitar!
Alligator wants to know your location lol
I gotta go with the Travis Bean myself. Jerry didn't use it very often but man, when he did use it, that's some of the best guitar work you'll get out of Jerry
There is no version of this song by anyone, better than the one done by Hendrix.
+frank “fancyboy” rella as much as I love the dead, I cannot disagree
frank rella wrong hendrix ruined this song.
You mean studio, I seen both perform Bob D;s tune & the dead were much better...
Brent is absolutely sizzling after 4 min. and that's another dimension entirely....

Dave Matthews Band- central park is an amazing version of the song & probably my favorite version by anyone..

Dead obviously have a huge veneration for Bob Dylan. They have covered so many of his songs. I even seen Quin the Eskimo the other day.
pwreric for sure, and consider number of times they jammed with him- something I was still seeing into the 2000's with Phil and friends
epic short shorts ftw
@elec165 Jerry Garcia was an average guitar player?!..........say the guy who's commenting on his video. lol

Man sorry Jimi, Jerry really kicked your ass on this solo.
Lol - what a stupid comment.
Saw this song at the kaiser auditorium...from that point on I knew Jerry was the greatest guitarist ever!!!!!! Sorry Jimmi........
I think I'd have to agree with that.
BTW, Jerry was also missing a finger.
for me its a new one

@metallica3604 If you expect humans not to make mistakes your in for many disappointments in your life. By a Kerioki machine and have fun!!
This is the best cover..Better that Bob. Dylan.
And Hendrix, oh I said it!
Check it out right before 5:00 minutes, Jerry is ready to rip!
How about you show some respect for the Dead and stop arguing. Neither Garcia nor Hendrix nor Dylan would appreciate your petty arguing very much.
Lol too many personalities clashing at once on stage. Although I think Dylan and Hendrix would have more of a problem. Jerry's just too chill! :P
not hating. I just like to read funny comments about people dissecting songs and giving there funny opinions.
as long as dylan don't sing it @Romencer17 LOL
Jerry's tone reminds me of Jimmy Herring here
closer to the original song not that matters.
@ChromaticaShags
you should not have said that
:p
Brent plays the organ with the best of them
Yeah! Like, I mean, really, like, awesome comment maaaan?!!

he always did
@metallica3604 Man Jimi fucked up Dylan's lyrics lol

Even though I'm an acid-head from the 60's, I never could get high enough to make them sound good.

you just never listened to a solid Althea
I'll never understand why he wears shorts.
this is one song the dead should not have covered
dmanzo811 what's wrong with it
And why is that?
dmanzo811 bullshit
I feel like Jerry could have done this better in the 70s. idk, some things off; flat bends and the like.
Jonah Fuerstenberg 7/4/89 version is better than this
Lol
Lord, that's terrible. Hendrix would turn over in his grave.
it would probably be awkward and suck.
