  • Grateful Dead - An amazing moment in time captured in Las Vegas in 1994. This one is all Jerry, frail yet strong and full of emotion. In my opinion, the solo alone is possibly one of the most poetic of Jerry's later years.

Could take minutes, could take years but one moment you will "get it" out of the blue. It will just click. This isn't music you listen to. It's music you feel in your heart and soul.

Amen. Took a few years of having friends make me listen to the Dead until, one day, like you said, the penny dropped and I've never looked back.

Exactly! I went to the show before Jerrys last one. I wasn't impressed. I was growing up in the grunge era and listened to them for about 20 years. Then the dead just clicked. Now it's all I listen to. Literally

I've listened to the Dead for 50 years, and this is the heroin ridden Garcia, very aged for a 50 years old, who has lost his musical imagination, just running through his technique, which used to be the brush strokes of many a masterpiece.
A good Peggy-O is Dukes University.

@@johncarden8985 I agree with this but it's still so touching when he sings his ballads or sad songs with the soul of a run down 70 year old who really only 50 year old and can feel the pain, but heroin has ruined many a men n I'm not ashamed to say I have the same problem jerry had. 4 n half years clean n counting tho

My "Dead Era" runs about '1982 to 1991. I've watched this one, later performance, dozens of times because the darkness cracks and some of the old starlight blasts out. It seems like Jerry throws this solo to the ages, a last farewell. Better stop watching tonight, or the kids'll wonder why my eyes are glistening.

Jerry is the only person outside of family, and friends who's death makes me feel such sorrow every timeIi see his soul through his art. I genuinely miss him. There has been no one else that comes across so sincere through their music. Nobody else performs directly through their feelings as Jerry did. Never the same way twice. The truest form of performing music, and also the rarest.

  • @celticskunk

The Grateful Dead gave their audiences something that has never been duplicated. The most important thing at a Dead concert was the "vibe", a group conscienceness on a molecular level. I first experienced it at an August 1968 concert at the Shrine expo in L.A. Probably 3/4 ths of the crowd were high on acid and through the magic of Jerry Garcia, everyone was of one mind and conscienceness. Long live the good ole Grateful Dead.

If i said it once,or a thousand times...its not enough!...This Peggy-O is overwhelmingly fabulous!!..The solo alone, deserves a Grammy!..and the tone of his voice was perfect on this nite...He sounds so soothing and trusting. So much better than early era Jerry, his voice aged like a fine wine...(in a bottle with a few cracks)

I got to hang out and smoke weed with Jerry in 1975 in Albany backstage when he was playing with Merle Saunders. It was supposed to be mine...I promised Jerry some good Jamaican weed and I rolled three joints but I put them in the pocket of a shirt I was wearing and changed shirts. "No problem," said Jerry when I got backstage. "We'll smoke mine". We then got into a deep conversation and I asked him "what it felt like to be a Demi-God to Dead Heads." "I don't like to be put on a pedestal or worshipped," he said. "I'm just doing it to spread the love of music". Which led me to say "music is love" Jerry picked up on it and we were both chanting/singing "Music is Love" over and over. Jerry sang the bottom note and I sang an upper 3rd and the drummer sang a high harmony. And then we all laughed...and then I was in tears, getting to sing with and get high with my all time HERO. I haven't washed my lips since then (not true), but everything else was how it happened "one afternoon long ago".

Chris Carpenter eh, clearing things up fer ya a bit here...
A few years earlier he fainted on stage.
Spent time recovering, but needed to get control of his weight. He was approaching diabetic, needed exercise. So he did.
      BUT...
He had been an off and on heroine user since 1973, shortly after his close friend Ron McKernan had died at 21 (I think) from liver disease, "Pigpen" drank heavy. Life long heroine use leads to a shorter life.
Jerry wanted to quit the stuff for his daughters upcoming wedding in a month or so. So he checked in to his clinic... apparently after taking a heavy dose, went to sleep, died.
