Great story! Brings back some fine memories. However, the 2 shows at Poplar Creek took place in 1983! Summer of 1984 they played Alpine Valley, far and away my favorite venue during the 1980's ☮️
Didn't see them at Poplar, but did see other bands at that gone venue. Too many houses too close to keep it going. Should've knocked down the houses instead, but Alpine was far better. Rosemont was horrible pig show by 93 and 94
May 29, 1980 Des Moines, IA. I worked at the Sheraton Inn Hotel. Dead stayed there. Day of show I called Jerry's room to ask if he'd sign some albums. He said he would. Then as an afterthought I asked if he could get me tickets. Long story short, I got two front row, just off of center tickets. If I'm lyin' I'm die'n
Thanks for sharing !Here's my story. St. Louis, Mo , 1971. A buddy's Uncle Clarence was working security at The Fox Theatre. ( Home of Chuck Berry's Hail Hail Rock N' Roll.) He just happens to be working the stairs leading up to the stage. He lets us on stage in between songs and we make our way to the back of the stage and sit down on some amplifier cases. When I feel it's appropriate, I light up a joint , so my claim to fame is I smoked a joint on stage at a Dead show ! LOL !
It's great to hear from a "convert". My very first concert was Aerosmith, and I still like them, but the Grateful Dead is a whole other thing, which I love. Managed to see them about 50 times from 1980-1995. Best times of my life. So happy that there are other folks who learned to love The Dead, as I did, and do.
@bobschenkel7921 thanks for watching and perfect choice "convert" I really enjoy the music especially the Pigpen era stuff...I truly hope the Youth of the world will keep this truly Americana Music Alive as well as keeping the community aspect of the music moving forward. Keep it loud
In the late '80s and early '90s they would do a run of New Year's shows at the Oakland Coliseum. We lived just far enough away that we would stay overnight at the nearby Holiday Inn. It was walking distance to the venue and because of the number of people, it was a safe walk even at 2:00AM. Anyway, the marquee out front would always announce "WELCOME DEADHEADS", an indicator that that's who would be staying there. And, of course, it was. The scene was particularly funny one evening. While waiting to check in, here comes four young guys through the front door carrying a 6-foot brass hookah on their shoulders. Through the lobby to the elevators and in and up they go! The best part was the look on the manager's face as that, and a lot of other weird stuff, was going on. The parking spaces near the front door were occupied by cars that had backed in, opened their trunks revealing tanks of nitrous oxide and filling balloons that were being handed out to any and all outstretched hands. So, not that much different than the scene in the venue parking lot, but took on an enhanced vibe being at a place like a Holiday Inn.
That's such a great memory. Thanks so much for watching and daily I'm amazed at the sense of community they created. Truly the power of music...keep it loud
I discovered the Grateful Dead when I was about 16, in 1973. I was a little too young to catch the 60s. Finally saw them live in August of 1978 at Red Rocks - an ideal venue for them. It was their 2nd show there; they’d played there for the first time a month before. That July show is now an official release. Saw them twice more in the late 70’s.

Great to hear you were coherent enough to remember the concert. I was never a Dead Head, but I respect their legacy and how their music and overall vibe touched so many fans on a level few bands have ever done.
I would have fanboi'd out so hard if I were checking in the Dead to their tour accommodations. That is a memory, thanks for sharing. Very sad about Phil though, never hear playing like that again
Nice story.... Thanks for sharing the memory with us. I was a Taper from 76 till the end (and beyond). I probably recorded the show you saw. If you get back to me with the exact date., and what medium you can listen on., it would be a pleasure to make a copy for you.
Awesome that is so great....boy I know you have lots of great memories...I will subscribe and get that info to you..again Thanks for the generous offer and for watching Please let's keep the Music Alive
@timharrigian6845 I can't pinpoint a particular moment when the Dead came into my life, but once it happened it forever changed my life. Anyone can enjoy wading in the musical waters of the Grateful Dead, but stick around a while and you'll begin to realize the actual DEPTH of their music. ...and every time you think you can see the bottom, you find that it's even deeper. ❤️ "Keep it Loud" ⚡❤️ (so it can't be ignored!)
Cool story. I went to several shows during the same time period. I too had no idea what it was all about until the first time. Felt like it was a time machine back to the 60s. The girls with the bells...We called it the twinkle zone. There was a grassy area above the seating that wasn't in direct line of sight with the sound system so the music wasn't as loud. As we walked into the twinkle zone, the music faded away and the bells took over. They were dancing around us without making eye contact or bumping into us. It was bizarre.
That's a great description. Like being on a different planet. Plus Grill Chesse sandwiches for $1.00 in the parking lot so they would have gas money to the next show
The first Dead tape I got was Reckoning in 1981 or so. The second one I got was American Beauty. The next 75 tapes or so were all bootlegs I got trading with friends.

Anyway, I went to another room and somebody put me on the guest list for 2 for the show. I wasn't a fan at the time, and when we got there, there was such a crowd at the gates, the decided not to go.
