I saw James Brown at the Apollo Theater in New York in 1962 at the age of 5. Never forgot his performance...and a free live album was given to all!

Craziest act in all of music, the Godfather of Soul. There was nothing like James Brown. He toured constantly. He was in Sacramento every year for ages.

James Brown was amazing! He had so much influence on rockers that came after him. Much respect. Incidentally, you should look up and listen to Linkin Park's headnod to James Brown on their Mmm Cookies CD- the song is called You Ain't Gotsta.

That performance spooked the Rolling Stones who came out after him. They intended to put on a performance like none other, but after he finished, they realized that wasn't going to happened. So they did the best they could.

Known as the "hardest working man in show business". A title rightfully earned. Glad you picked the TAMI show. There are several versions of this on the 'net but the TAMI is by far the best one. BTW, the TAMI was a one off. Not a series, but a special that was one and done.

True Story: This Tami show had various artists play their sets of songs, and The Rolling Stones INSISTED that they closed out the show. Well, James Brown went on stage second to last; talk about OWNING the whole show! Imagine how inadequate the Stones felt having to go onstage after he flat out burned it!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤

You need to see the entire 15-minute segment in which JB performed in the TAMI Show, which was a movie that came out in either 1964 or 1965. He opened with "Out of Sight" and danced all over the stage before he did "Please, Please, Please." After that song, he went into "Night Train" and led the crowd in chanting "night, night, night" and finished that up with a whole lot of dancing. It's all fantastic. The Rolling Stone came on next in the program and wondered how they could ever top JB's performance.

I'm almost 70 years old now, and James Brown is without the best performer I ever saw! However, the Temptations were a close second! Believe this or NOT... James got this idea of dropping to his knees, walking out and having another person put on the his king robe from the old southern Baptist Church preachers... James embellished further on their ideas and exaggerated them to the point of no return drama and did WELL with it in all his early shows... It was a fantastic "gimmick"🏆👍👍🏆

James Brown was a musical Genius. The time was right. He knew just what they wanted. And he knew just how to give it to them. Not too much. Just enough to keep them coming back for more.
I was just a young white kid, playing drums and learning more and more everyday. I heard my first James Brown Album when I was about 12. The screams, the grunts, the rhythmic instruments throughout the entire band...... I literally had tears in my eyes. I was just a young white kid, but I got it. I understood it. I craved more of it. My Parents were horrified that I was listening to the screams and such. My friends looked at me like I was crazy. Black folks looked at me with squinted eyes and sideways looks, as if I was making a mistake when I bought his albums. But I didn't care. I got it. I understood and I felt it. Not too many people have touched me musically like James Brown. And he was an American Patriot. Despite some problems he had over the years, he always told people how he loved America and we lived in the greatest country in the world. RIP Brother. I miss the your music.

In the late summer of '68, James Brown & The Famous Flames came to Denver. Now, the ONLY venue that would allow him to perform was the old Paramount Theater, downtown on 16th & Glenarm street. Because of fears of violence , no other place would allow him. Tickets were $5.50, & I bought 2. The girl I was seeing then, broke up with me when I asked her to go with me . THAT's how insulted she was. My friends all bet I'd either get beaten up--------robbed------or killed. I knew different, went by myself., sold the 2nd ticket to a guy who was a student at CU-Boulder, named Dave Carter. I sold it for 5 bucks; he & I went on in, flirted with a couple of high school girls, & had a great time. WAS I the only white guy there ? I'll never know, because i wasn't interested in finding out. -------Once the lights went down, the screaming & cheering began, & for 2 hours non-stop, James & The guys put on an incredible show ! ' Please, Please, Please,", was his encore song. By the time he was done, we were all utterly exhausted, & the very last thing on anyone's mind, was trouble. Dave & I shook hands, said goodbye to the 2 cuties who sat by us, & i walked home. Never a second, of trouble. I of course, knew this. if you act respectfully, & not like a total jerk. respect the women& know your limits with them, there won't be any trouble. it was an incredible night.--------MJL, 76 y/o

All that young people know about today is James Brown and his Funky Band. That’s IT.
But what they are too YOUNG to remember is that James Brown first began his career as a member of a SINGING GROUP. And it was THAT GROUP ( NOT HIS BAND) that were called
THE FAMOUS FLAMES . James had many hit records with THE FAMOUS FLAMES from 1956-1964…and they are performing WITH him on THIS SHOW.
Their NAMES were: BOBBY BYRD (yes, THAT Bobby Byrd) LLOYD STALLWORTH, and BOBBY BENNETT. The FLAMES were NOT just “backups” for Brown…because JAMES BROWN was a Famous Flame TOO !! JAMES BROWN & THE FAMOUS FLAMES were ALL ONE GROUP. The Flames always shared EQUAL BILLING with JAMES on ALL RECORDS and at ALL CONCERT VENUES where they played . The BACKUP MUSICIANS were called The James Brown Band… and THEY were NOT Famous Flames (Despite what you may have heard to the CONTRARY.) THE FAMOUS FLAMES can be heard on such early hits as PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, TRY ME, I’LL GO CRAZY, I DON’T MIND,
BEWILDERED, SHOUT AND SMIMMY , OH BABY DONT YOU WEEP, THINK, THREE HEARTS IN A TANGLE , GOOD GOOD LOVIN’ THIS OLD HEART, and more.
JAMES BROWN was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
THE FAMOUS FLAMES were inducted in 2012. The Hall of Fame later stated that, since JAMES BROWN first began his career as a MEMBER OF THE FAMOUS FLAMES, The Flames SHOULD have been inducted WITH JAMES BROWN back in 1986.
The James Brown Band/JBs were NOMINATED, but NOT INDUCTED, in 2015.
    ONE MORE THING:
In the ’50’s and ‘60’s, JAMES BROWN was NOT known as “The Godfather of Soul”. (That was a 70’s/‘80’s thing. ) He was known as….”MISTER DYNAMITE !!”

THE legendary TAMI [ TEEN AGE MUSIC INTERNATIONAL] show, 9/9/& 9/10/1964, at The Old Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. This audience of about 1000 kids, almost all white, had NO idea of what hit them when James Brown & The Famous Flames hit the stage. THIS is song #3 of 4 he did that incredible night. The guys -------almost all white-----were in shock. Most were insecure & fearful of The Godfather of Soul. A very few, & I was one, were standing & cheering. Among the crowd of mostly young girls, the reactions were extreme. Either they sat there, hating every minute, or they were screaming for more, & more. I know all this, because I was there, both nights. JB came out on night 2, 9/10. The performance he put on was exhausting to watch, but I already knew him, because I was the ONLY white kid in Denver, who owned " James Brown At The Apollo " & I heard him regularly on XERV, late at night, with Wolfman Jack. So, I was one of the guys on my feet cheering & marveling at the incredible energy of this man, & The Flames. I wasn't insecure, but I saw the revolution happen in front of me; young white girls screaming for a black guy openly & without shame or fear. That night opened the floodgates, the long overdue floodgates allowing white girls to scream & cry over black guys. I saw it happen there, that night. it was history being made. --------------MJL, 76 y/o

I remember seeing the T.A.M.I. show (it was a movie) at the old Aurora Drive-In in Seattle when it was first released, still one of my favorite memories. Beach Boys had it in their contract for the show that after the movie made its original rounds their clip would be cut from reruns - - they were about to go into the studio to record Pet Sounds and wanted to distance themselves from surf music

I take offense with the notion that this was his "best" performance. I'm just gonna take away that the person that said it is talking about what he's seen on video.
This is not his "best" performance. He has MANY so saying it's the best is like trying to pick out MJ's "best" performance. Many would argue that the live at the Apollo is best or latter performances. Sooooo many great ones.
