The tools I used when I was working for Marvel and other companies from 1999-2006 were originally the Gillotte 659 Crow Quill, a Windsor and Newton Finest Sable #2, but then Gillotte and W&N both got bought out, so I swapped to Hunt 102 Crow Quills, Scharff Series 3000 finest sable #2 watercolors (85% of my work), and a full set of Rapidiographs for straight lines, mechanicals, and architecture, though on that, I got more prone to using a crow quill on buildings and architecture towards the end of when I was working full time as an inker, simply because it felt more organic and less sterile. I never did get into Microns. The thought of using a #4 is absolutely terrifying to me - WAY too much ink in that, and the lines get out of control far too easily, in my experience. The #2's always gave me the best results. I used to use Dick Blick Black Cat, mixed 50/50 with Rapidograph Darkest Black to ink. Good times. I do miss it, but I have a much more lucrative career now in graphic design, so going back simply isn't an available option for me, more's the pity. I miss those days. I loved waking up and making comic books every day.

Also, a Hunt 102 needs 30-90 minutes of being used, half dead and empty, with no ink, on a clean page, and then with ink, just doing lines of varying quickness, before it's safe to drop it on a commercial page that you're getting paid for, EVERY time, in my experience. It's the nib; every time. No joke. Years of observations have taught me this, much to my white-overpainting correction-based regrets.

FYI, in the past, we got handed low res photocopies in black and white, and we had to practice on lightboards on vellum overlays. That was as late as the late 1990's to late 2000's. No joke. I was sending in original pages via Fed-Ex circa 2005.

So..finally...after leaving the business for over 20 years, I get to see another PRO INK!! It is so cool to see how you approach the lines. It seems every inker finds his own way/direction to hold the nib and throw or pull a line. Very informative man! Funny you mentioned your technique to keep your hand from suffering damage. I wish I heard that earlier! My run on Spawn and other TMP titles literally blew my hand out! Thanks for sharing man.

Hey Chance you are an amazing inker. I always loved your work and if I am not mistaken back then you did some pin ups you penciled and inked yourself which were AWESOME!! I follow you I think on facebook but will follow you here as well!!

@@RichardFriendartist ....Much appreciated man!! It's kind of funny as a guy sits back for years working his ass off and is oblivious if any other pros even notice their work as the other pros are busy working their asses off :) Yeah...I do some pencils and inks now and then....unfortunately spending so much time as an inker kind of halted my growth as a penciller...so now I'm trying to get back to that when I can just for fun! I really love your work man! You have done some amazing work! I have followed you for years! OK..enough ass kissing..GET BACK TO WORK!!! :)

Hi Richard. I'm inking digitally while watching this video and once you started taking about how you have a light touch and how your hand doesn't cramp I started to hold the stylus in a way my hand started cramping, probably psychosomatic or from boxing. But it went away as the video progressed. As for trying to breaking I've been going to cons and showing my stuff to editors and professional inkers. A few like Adrian DiBenedetto and Scott Hanna have said I'm should be getting work and some like Matt Banning and Mark Morales say I'm 80-90% percent ready just some minor things I need to focus on. And the editors I've spoken with I'm good but don't need an inker at the moment but give me their card and tell me to try to team up with a penciler. I have been sending an editor samples once a month, he did send me samples after a con to work, but he's says he has at least 5 pro inker's waiting for work. He did say he like my samples and that it good that I work digitally since it can help with a tight deadline. I once cold called the Wildstorm office while I was living in San Diego. Everyone was a little weirded out that I found the place, but were nice and gave me a tour and let me watch them work for a few minutes and then gave me some comps when I left.

What about a little video.... demoing some of those japanese nibs and pens? BTW, while you prefer the Copic Multiliners, it should be said they're quite heavy with the metal barrel. I think the Pitt pens are the best of the three, price/ink quality.

Yes, I've bought things out of respect for the material and found things in it that were useful. Recently got 'Assassins Creed: A Complete Visual History'. All paintings of character designs, environments, action scenes, Toys, from across all the games. Found it in the bargain bin for $20. I don't play the games, not interested in the lore-- but I think they did phenomenal work. I think it'll be a useful reference when i draw.

I’m very good at art and I can’t get work☹️ it’s my demographic. I live on the most southern tip of Texas and there’s no comic book company’s near me. Any advice as to who I can reach out to?

  • @TheFutureLooksGrimm

It’s interesting the way you hold the pen and scratch out lil lines using the thumb and wrist left to right. As opposed to pulling lines which is the way it’s traditionally taught. I think it works well for you because of your style and experience can churn out a good end result. But I can’t see it working well for most people still learning and of course like the old saying goes, it’s good to learn the rules before you (inkers still learning) break them.
I just thought it was worth mentioning for those viewers.

Early on, when you were holding the pages in your hand, you lifted them a little off the board, and they *_really_* came into sharp focus. I don't know if you can reasonably get your camera that close to the paper as you're working (I imagine there's a limit!), but that would be really cool. As always, Richard, I enjoy watching you work and hearing your commentary. Just stop dissing us digital inkers, okay? ;)

Well.. I have been trying to get some work as an inker, I live in Mexico, so going to conventions is a little dificult for me, some editors are coming now to shows in Mexico, as a matter of fact, CB Cebulski came to my hometown of Queretaro to la CONQUE convention, he was reviewing portfolios, however,... only for pencilers, so.. Conventions are out of the question, so.. I got a lot of emails from editors and agents and have been sending samples for quite a while.. got some answers from DC and Marvel, they like my work, however... they say that inkers are just going to disapear, that they don't need inkers right now that my best chance is to start working with a penciler and that maybe that way I can get some work.. and some have told me.. forget about inking... is dead.. start penciling...so.. last April Neal Adams checked my work, he liked my inks, and took some samples, and said that in the future he may need inkers,... but... so far nothing.....so.... that is how things are going..saludos Rich.

    • @RichardFriendartist
      @RichardFriendartist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

for sure keep looking to pencilers who want to use inkers...either professional or up and coming. I think that will be a key connection for you. Reach out to them politely and just see what is going on. Best of luck with it!

just out of curiosity you say in your post "they say inkers are just going to disappear" who said this...or if you want to be more vague...how many people said this to you? Just wondering.

    • @LOBOCOMICS1

@@RichardFriendartist Yes of course... i have shown my samples to..almost anyone.. from agents.. to editors.. to.. anyone who would look at them... CB cebulski told me that they still hire inkers if they are good, gave me his card, I sent him an email, and he redirected me to Rickey Purdin... very niecely he answered and told me he was going to send me some try out pages.. I told him.. that I was an inker not a penciler.. never wrote back.... not all editors answer, in my experience... maybe 3 or 4 form Marvel and DC answer, they are more direct, they say,... we don't need inkers right now... and finally, agents,.. they are totaly honest... they are the ones who say... it's over... no one is hiring inkers... very stright forward... now small companies they don't have the money to hire an inker and a penciler.. I got a job on First Comics, they told me they needed to cut expenses after 2 issues.. so they decided to color directly the pencils...so... there you have it, that is my experience when it comes down to sending samples... here is my fb page.. facebook.com/ulisescurielinks/ .. you can check my work if you like..... anyways.. what do you think?.
