I had to really knuckle down. I didn't make some big decision though to be honest...it just was like I didn't do a video one week, and then my focus totally shifted.
Nice Jae Lee pages I never seen before. Missed your channel, but found Heavy Art Talk . Keep drawing hardout, maybe you'll get Blasterkid finished sooner without rushing. Cheers, Rich!
yeah. I am really trying to work through some things right now. It's starting to click though. I think in a few more months I should be getting closer to where I am trying to get~!
@@RichardFriendartist No worries Bro! I'm glad to hear you've been busy and I can not wait to see what you've been working on! Thank you for all of your awesome videos and for being a constant source of inspiration.
@@RichardFriendartist Also! Since you wanted requests for artists to cover, I think that Ryan Ottley might be cool to do. His work has been all over the place in recent years but I think would be cool to hear what you think of his inking style and his drawings. But anyways keep rockin it Richard!
Thanks for taking the time to make and post this. I know how busy you are from your IG posts, but I genuinely got excited when I got the YT notification.
That Mike Mignola story about removing detail is the most profound thing I've heard in a while. He's my favorite and now I understand better how he does it
yeah it's not so easy to simplify. It seems like it would be so I totally relate with the idea of "hey you just draw less and it's faster" but to do to do it well takes a lot of consideration!
I need to comment more, I have silently been so upset you were gone. Your channel is definitely my favorite. Nobody else makes sound effects or has cats ruining the stream!
Hey Richard. Did you decide to hold off on the Blaster kid project? I remember the sign-up list about a year ago and was looking forward to the campaign, but have not heard anything about it since then. I was pretty excited for it because your art is so good. Any word on this?
no. I just needed to save up some money...so I've been trying to do things that can cover my living expenses and hopefully buy me more time to draw it!
trying. I hurt my back 2 weeks ago and it's been so hard to work. I did finally get 3 new pieces done but it was hard and I was in a lot of pain. It's slowly getting better!
@@RichardFriendartist @bjscorpio4041 I was going to mention that he uses pencil for the shading as well (held like you do in figure drawing) I was able to watch him do commission work at some conventions and posted a few videos if him working...I learned so much from the experience.
yeah normally I am not on that side of my office. I have 2 spots where I keep my monitor. That was my old spot. The mic sits right next to the tower. sorry about that. I didn't notice the neighbors dog barking either...so my apologies for that too!!
I’ve been watching your videos all weekend! Also if you need suggestions, anything Art Adams!! I’m working on a comic and watching your videos while I work really helps me get in the groove, appreciate your stuff! 🙏
Omg!! Great to have u back!! Now grab Kelsey lol just do shorter shows I just went through my short boxes n found your Travis wildcats portacio books!! Welcome back!
it's going good. I am further along that people might guess. I have been trying to decide if I am going to do a campaign or some other approach. I have a few ideas I have been looking into. thanks.
Rich! I'm glad you're back, man. Even if it's temporary (please don't leave us 😭). Last couple of weeks I almost left comments asking when you would be back. I completely understand taking 30 hours per piece, I'm the same. It's the drawback to high detail styles. It'll take me weeks to get a piece done sometimes. This Jae Lee stuff is perfect for a return video.
4:24 because Mike is indecisive. Stephan Franck finished six 100 page graphic novels while working as a director and storyboard artist. Simplified styles should never take longer than over rendered styles. Spot your blacks, define your environments, be decisive. That's how you build speed.
When I started collecting comics and picked up that wildcats trilogy, I was not a fan of Jae Lee's sketchy/messy style. And then I started drawing comics for a living, and quickly found Jae to be in my top list of comic artists. I didn't appreciate his skill back then. He is AMAZING and I find myself referencing his stuff to this day. Also, I always pronounced it Chi-O-doe. I have no idea what's correct anymore, lol.
hahaha. I don't want to say. I've done plenty of crappy books in my career especially early on (and even now I have a lot of crappy drawings, that fall apart) so it happens to everyone. :)
15:10 it's called maturity. Alex Toth emphasized this. Eduardo Risso has this approach. Tell the story. Over rendering interferes with the overall storytelling. Even Charest started stripping down his work. RYAN OTTLEY completes 22 pages in 2 weeks. Simplify, have solid structure, use reference, use 3D models as reference and you will get the work done faster.
Hello There! Yes, I noticed your absence, hope you are back for good and heres my comment I like much more Jae Lee’s modern era than his 90s era, it would be great have him doing more interior art Cheers!
If you did a super fun Sunday like for painters like Jerry Vamderstelt? I know it’s not necessarily comic related, but thought to ask….and add a comment 😉
Hey richard! In an old video of yours that you did an inteoduction to hunt 102 inking i wrote a comment but because its an old video you probaly didnt see it so if you can please check my comment on that video ill be very glad!

Okay, the world is falling into place again! Richard is back everyone.
kind of back. I am going to try and do short pre-recorded videos. I do love youtube. I just don't have a lot of time.

thanks. I was just working so I never went anywhere really. :)
And when the world needed him most... he returned.

Whoa, who's this fresh, new, up-and-coming artist?
Wow, really nice to have you back Rich. It has been a while. Jae Lee is one of my favorites.
For me the re-imagining of his style seemed to spring from the first Dark Tower preview. Before that he seemed to have disappeared for awhile.
Id love to see one on early Ashley wood, like doom 2099, looked so great but hadn't gone the painted route yet
it doesn't really matter if it's "Naymore" or "Nahmore".....due to the fact that both mean.... No-more....glad to have you back, Dude.
