Maybe a tutorial on how to draw black, shiny clothes like Cat Woman's costume? Always tricky to know how much should be black and how much should be reflecting light
I am not a professional, but those costumes are thin and plastic. So when you draw them, make them look stiff with thicker wrinkle sections fitted to the body. Think about where your lightsource is, and look at the clothing like planes. Once you figure out which planes are facing the light, light em up! Then you can throw an airbrush of reflected light on both the lit side and the unlit side (reflected light) and erase where needed.
whenever i draw latex, i just draw a few white lines on some of edges to simulate rim lighting, and scribble some random shapes on a few areas to represent the reflection of the environment, while bending some of them accordingly to imply the shape of either the cloth or what is underneath it (depending on how skin tight that thing is). honestly just look at references from other artists or illustrators. references help so much when you have no idea of what you're doing, and when you use them enough times for your stuff, it simply becomes muscle memory, and you can then draw it from scratch again and again with no worries. latex can be both fun and a little frustrating to draw at times lol
This is literally having the best professional artist in the industry giving you lessons. The internet is a magical place. David thank you so much for sharing these. 🙏🙏🙏
That piece of advice about drawing the negative space rather than the folds has just made this whole process so much more intuitive for me. Thank you so much!
I was also the same age when I started to like drawing,, well maybe 4 years younger than 10. Don't ever stop because one day you'll get the best from what you've done.
I knew it, first draw the figure and then on top the cloth. Like a cake and then the decoration. I had learned it, but there where fuzzy areas in my memory. Thank you Master Finch.
Even though I'm somewhat advanced in art and no longer truly need a reference for things to look okay and believable enough, I love looking at this videos. Being refreshed and reminded of the basics is great, and you get to look at wonderful and super well done studies like these :} thank you do much
First of all I would like to thank you for doing this. I was so excited when I saw you on TH-cam and you are one of my favorite artists and have watched and love all your videos. I am also a struggling artist and one of my problems are heads, mainly placement at the eyes nose and mouth at angles. Especially dynamic ones.
this stuff has seriously changed my entire life. ive tried to draw this style of art since my earliest days just out of pure inspiration, love of art and drawing 100% and thats never changed. Im 39 and I still love it and draw regularly but could never produce any art worth keeping. I just have like two decades of me experimenting and drawing pages of different body parts or even pipe drawing since I was young. i tried reading like mcfarlane magazine articles in was it Wizard? I dont remember but what im saying is after watching these videos its changed my ability to produce this type of art man!! It has really made my art richer, just better. Things have plagued me for years are fun to draw now. I enjoy drawing hands and feet and its made everything just look better! thank you for taking the time to sit and teach this stuff the humble and ingeniously inciteful and patient way you do is an absolutely wonderful thing !!! I just wanna say thwnk you really man. It has really made me enjoy what i love in a new and better way all over again. btw peace sells is one of the best metal albums ever made. total agreement
Thanks David. But the shading of the folds to create that realistic look is where I got caught up 😥 I'll practice and learn how to render smooth shades especially using the negative space style so that it appears like it was done digitally just like you.🎨💫
I like how you phrased it, "interconnecting negative shapes". It sounds much plainer and clearer that when I try to explain chiaroscura. Thanks for the, very informative, demonstration.
Dope!!! Techniques I use are/is a real technique. The fact that a pro does it makes me so happy to know I'm not at all off or far from getting better. 💪🏼 "Yeesss!"
So helpful! I have so much trouble with clothing lines, making it look realistic like that. Often I just draw these straight lines coming off of choke points, but it never looks right. This was really informative. I wish TH-cam allowed us to post photos, I would post a couple of my drawings to show what I am talking about. Thanks is so much for this walkthrough. It helps a lot.
This video was the first video that actrully helped me learn to draw, now 3 years later and I can draw them easily, though I don’t even draw much anymore
Someone else echoed a perspective tutorial. I know you've done them in the past, and another would be cool however I'd really like for you to show your techniques on drawing cars and in particular shading/rending them. Especially lighting on tires. Thanks.
I have spent half of my life breaking down the techniques used by talented artists. @DavidFinch comes out and makes sense with it and brings back the excitement!
Thank you! I would love to see you share your method for drawing characters in an indoor setting, for example, bedrooms, kitchens, office space, jewelry stores, etc. Again, thank you for taking the time to share your skill and knowledge with us.
Extremely helpful once again! And great video edits by the way with the intro and the added red circles really help focus and illustrate the lesson ; at least the visual aids are very helpful for my brain to quickly absorb the info....thanks so much for this
Im a student. Before the covid i doesnt have time to learn drawing and when the covid and quarantine started i have alot of time for learning so my skill improves alot
Most pro artists say to not overdo the folds, but i always think about those cool comics-ctyle folds(and also in anime style) that just mesmerizing. i would say do as many and as detaild as you want, but ONLY if you already know how to do it and specifically going for that look
If you want clothes to look finch style follow this. But keep in mind finch style is all incredibly jagged and that shirt is basically just another layer of skin on the guy. I’ve drawn with subconscious Finch influence for a long time. This teaches you that all clothes have to be razor sharp and dynamic.
The clothhes folding like architecture wiith no reference is pain enough, like i say on comment on other of yours videos, you are great artist and you help a lot.
So great to see your instructional videos here on TH-cam. I grew up buying many comicbooks you worked on so this is soooo cool to see your drawing process and your thoughts on how you go about illustrating. Thanks for sharing your technics with us here
Such an impressive tutorial covering a real tricky subject. Learnt some sweet tricks here to add to the tool-set, thanks David! Loving the new intro too!
This is a great video. A true master at his craft. You're well-spoken and concise with your speech and makes learning that much easier and enjoyable. This is the first video I've come across of yours and I've subscribed to make sure I catch more or your lessons. Thanks!
It always blows my mind how some of my favorite artists are directly teaching me art lessons through this platform. Thanks David!
