    Hey guys, always great to see another video of your travels up the east coast of Aus. Glad that your steering cables have been renewed & all went well with your night departure from your berth at Boatworks. I am not sure but I think that Boatworks is owned by Tony Longhurst, a former V8 Supercar driver. Kristina your hair looks ace & your video presentation is brilliant. Wow, John certainly damaged his fingers & glad that it was not worse & yes, the sight of a lot of blood usually means that the damage is worse than it looks, John is certainly one brave man hey. The weather you show looks good for sailing & its always good to try & wait for best weather if possible. I watch a couple of other boating adventures & they always wait for best weather to sail if possible. Sometimes of course thats not possible. I think that for first time sailors you are doing well & who would have thought that you would depart Boatworks in the dark & successfully negotiate all to now be anchored in Bribe Island. Have been there by land when my wife & I toured Aus with caravan & toy poodle. Keep doing what you are & great content. I just love watching your videos & they are a highlight of my morning, Take care & God bless you both, Glen Hopkins

    Colregs dictate in the event of a collision both Skippers are at fault if underway.Both Skippers shall keep a proper watch while the vessel is underway and both Skippers shall make any provisions necessary to avoid collision.A bit different when coming in to dock in which case it’s how hard your willing to hit the dock to stop your vessel,lol,it’s a running joke with yachties,slow and steady wins the race.safe sailing guys.

    • @jptilley10
      @jptilley10 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great Tips SV Thora 👌🏻 it’s not always easy is it, under motor under sail, point of sail, overtaking, leeward/upwind, etc etc. I guess the bottom line is don’t crash and you can’t go wrong hey 😜

    • @davefeinglass9118
      @davefeinglass9118 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While its likely true that in a collision both vessels can be considered at fault, it is still also the responsibility of the Give Way vessel to make "early and substantial action" so as to signal that they see the Stand On vessel and intend to give way. Its not well defined what "early" is, and Kristina thought they were too close but it looked to me like it was plenty of room - maybe its the camera or maybe its my years sailing in crowded bays where boats routinely pass close enough to exchange supplies. I suppose out in uncrowded ocean waters, why wait so long to signal that you see the Stand On vessel and intend to alter course?
      John looking up the rules in real time was pretty funny :)

    • @jptilley10
      @jptilley10 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davefeinglass9118 hey Dave, I remember reading that too. We were fairly close to a marina so there was some traffic about. Given the slow speed, light winds and available sea room I was comfortable getting close on this occasion, I could see the skipper standing at the helm and could see him looking at us, I think he was hoping he’d be able to pass behind without changing course and left it to the last minute to change course. It did feel like a game of chicken for a moment there, Kristina was convinced we were suppose to give way, but mostly because we are new to sailing so we should just keep out of everyone’s way, (which I agree to to a point 😂). I noticed a lot of club sailors are comfortable getting fairly close, where as cruisers along the coast tend to think 1nm is too close. Guess it depends on the situation. Anyway we gave each other a smile and a wave as we passed so I’m pretty sure the other skipper was aware he was the give way vessel otherwise I’m sure it would have been expletives and maybe the bird haha.

    Would love to sail Australia one day when I retire. You guys look great. Keep learning and going, and you will have great stories to tell your kids and grandkids.
    Just two points if I may:
    1. When at sea the one on your right has the right of the way, unless they are sailing under motor, and you are sailing under sail only, or unless the other vessel has limited maneuvering capability. AIS and Radio are instrumental in such cases, since both captains are responsible for safe navigation.
    2. We wash anchor and chain when we leave an anchorage, that is when we pull the anchor up, in order to avoid carrying along seaweed and other living organisms, or even sand, that can contaminate the next anchorage. If you are using sea water, then I guess you don’t care doing it every time you drop or pull up anchor, but not even super yachts do that. However, if you are doing it with fresh water, I would recommend you save the water when you drop the anchor. Washing the anchor and rode only when you drop it, is actually helping diffuse all the present contaminants over a wider area.
    Keep your spirits up and keep going. Cheers!

    Good day Mates, so glad to see you again. I always look forward to your videos, I enjoyed watching this one. I’m so glad you made it into Queensland without a hitch. I have a question for John. As a pilot how many aircraft have you flown and which one is your favorite?

    • @jptilley10
      @jptilley10 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Brian, thanks for supporting the channel, It means a lot and it’s great to hear people are getting something out of following our adventure.
      Thanks for your interest about my flying career, Kristina’s keen to include something about this in a future video, but in a nutshell the smallest thing I’ve flown is a paraglider and sailplane and the largest a Boeing 777, before taking time off I was operating the B737, I like think with a little more skill than Tucana 😂 In total I think I have about 7000 hours over 15 types.
      Thanks again for the question 🙂

      @@jptilley10 So what's your favorite? I will finish ground school soon (online) and hope to learn on a PA-38 Tomahawk. I just love that T-tail. Thanks for responding to my question John. Have a great day.

      @@BrianRhodes9763 awesome Brian, nice work! I never flew the tomahawk but a lot of my mates did their ab initio training on them, great plane.
      My favorite single pilot aircraft was probably the C441 Cessna Conquest, the performance and ease of flying was like nothing else. We’d regularly fly it at around 30,000ft and it’d do 290kts and burn around 300lb/hr. Best multi crew aircraft would have to be the b777, such a solid well designed machine.
      Best of luck with your flying 🚀

      @@jptilley10 It seems like a lot of your flying knowledge will be transferrable to sailing, like problem solving, navigation, prioritizing, etc. Seems like a very similar skill set, even down to commonalities in fluid dynamics of wings and sails.

    Sailing and unnamed vessel, king Neptune would be Pi$$ed, as for Col Regs, you did had right of way, but he was faster, there is no shame in using your Radio, and ask would he like to cross your bow and you take his Stern.. it’s polite and Sensible..

    Of two yachtsunder sail, the one with sails at port has right of way. If both have sails at port the one highest at the wind has right of way. That also goes when sails of both are at starboard. This is the rule in competition sailing.

    • @tomriley5790
      @tomriley5790 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay, if your sails are on Port then the wind is coming over the starboard side of the boat - and you're on the starboard tack, so "Port Gives Way to Starboard" correct. If you're highest on the wind, by which I assume you mean pointing higher towards the wind then if you're in a collision situation you must be to leeward of the boat you're converging on (otherwise you'd be diverging courses) so this is correct as "Windward boat gives way" but it's an odd way of saying it and potentially confusing. Overtaking vessel also has to keep clear.
