You need to check out Rockaria a mixture of opera and rock. It's about meeting a beautiful opera singer and trying to bring over to the dark side of rock, and beautiful mix they make.
I've always loved ELO. They were inspired by the Beatles and the Moody Blues, among others. They fused rock sounds with a bit of classical string instruments and some good vocal harmonies. Good reaction, Maggie.
To my knowledge (which is vast on this subject, ELO has been my favorite band since 1975), Jeff has never said he was inspired by The Moody Blues. I realize they're both Birmingham bands, and that The Moody Blues used strings before ELO was even formed, but ELO's music sounds nothing like The Moody Blues. Jeff has named his influences in many interviews over the years, citing, *The Beatles, Roy Orbison,* and, *Del Shannon,* but he's never mentioned The Moody Blues.
If you like songs sung in different languages, then check out Nicole's "Ein bißchen Frieden" from Eurovision Song Contest 1982 finale, the multi-language reprise after she won the contest. She was originally singing in German, her native language (which was the requirement at ESC at the time), but after she won and was to sing once again, she sung in German, English, French and Dutch. It was a surprise to the organizers, who didn't know they prepared such a version. Later she also recorded a version in which she sings in 7 different languages.
Jeff Lynne was open about taking up the flag from The Beatles and other bands of the sixties. The guy is a bona fide genius He was in The Traveling Wilburys with Goerge Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Pettey, Roy Orbison amongst others
Wikipedia: Roy Wood (born 8 November 1946) is an English musician, singer and songwriter. He was particularly successful in the 1960s and 1970s as member and co-founder of the Move, Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard. Wood formed the Move in 1965, and had hits including "Flowers in the Rain". While the Move were still together, Wood, along with his band colleagues Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan, founded Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), which was later to gain major commercial success. After increasing tensions, Wood left ELO in 1972 and formed a new group, Wizzard, who had seven hits, including Wood's most regularly broadcast song, "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day". As a songwriter, Wood contributed a number of hits to the repertoire of the Move, ELO and Wizzard. Altogether, he had more than 20 singles in the UK Singles Chart under various guises, including three UK No. 1 hits. Wood was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 as a member of Electric Light Orchestra.[5]
A lot of British groups back in the 60's and 70's would sing in different languages. The Beatles acually sang in German...especially their earlier stuff.
ELO can always cheer you up on a rough day. Status Quo can have the same effect with Down Down or Caroline in a different way. ELO probably have some French fans so may have done the French bits as a 'gift' to them. The Beatles did some German versions of their songs because they played clubs there in the early days.
Nice choice! This song is near the end of the album "Time". The album is a Concept Project, and could easily be the soundtrack for a movie. The plot line clearly has the protagonist transported from 1985 to 2095, where he is promptly arrested for Time Traveling. (Spoiler Alert!) By the end of the album, he realizes that the dream he needs to hold on to is back in 1985, and he eventually makes it back to her. Time Travel, trips to the Moon, a Love Story, everything a good movie plot needs! To listen to Hold On Tight properly, you should bracket it with 21st Century Man and Epilogue. My other favorites on the album (can you tell I love the whole album) are Rain is Falling and Here Is The News.
Just saw them in Nashville last month... took my pops... they didn't do this one... the set was amazing, nonetheless. Great reaction. Hold on tight to your dreams. Always!
@@billyboy4774 And Jeff Lynne's first single release was the song _Impostors Of Life's Magazine_ in 1967! He is actually not so far behind the Beatles in time as some seem to think. And while Jeff definitely loves the Beatles, he also likes a _lot_ of other music!
When you were singing to the lyrics you sand as it is Hold on tight to your DREAM. When you were commenting you said it as I remember. Hold on tight to your DreamS. It may just be the drumming and snare that makes it sound like there is an S on dream.
"Accroches-toi a ton reve, Accroches-toi a ton reve, Quand tu vois ton bateau partir, Quand tu sents ton coeur se brise, Accroches-toi a ton reve This is a French translation of the first verse in English Hold on tight to your dream, Hold on tight to your dream, when you see your ship go sailing, when you feel your heart is breaking, Hold on tight to your dream. 😂 I think the reason Jeff added the French verse was to get better airplay on Europe radio. 😅
Beach Boys, then Beatles, then ELO. Bee Gees were around same time as ELO (70s). ELO was unique in that they incorporated cellos and violins. Next up, Rock n Roll is King!!!!
if you like adam lambert look up 'is anybody listening' from when he was singing theatre before american idol. a little back ground though he came in second on american idol most people thought he should of won but being gay they voted for the straight country singer.
They were after all of those but influenced by them and classical music. John Lennon referred to them as the "Baby Beatles" and thought they were a good group.
I’m not sure how you are getting the Beatles from this? This is from his Rock ‘n’ Roll influence, surely. Plenty of Beatles influence elsewhere of course, but here? I don’t see it.
Haven't heard this one in a looong time, not one of ELO's best. IMO. Maggie, please listen to "Mr. Blue Sky", "Livin' Thing", "Evil Woman", "Telephone Line", or "Strange Magic". All of them much better than this one.

'Rock 'n' Roll Is King', is another great one from this time period.
Seeing as how you're an opera singer, maybe you should react to their song "Rockaria"
(Jeff Lynne is such a great songwriter)
I love this song, I was 16 when this came out. ELO has so much energy and positivity in their songs. Thanks for the memories ELO

Such a great band. 1981 …I was a senior in high school and this song was huge!
Jeff Lynne was a huge Beatles fan so his music has a lot of their influence. Check out "Mr. Blue sky" it's very Beatle- esque.
Love this song... AND the surprise French LOL. Great job Maggie!
It's interesting that "Roy" suggested this, since this song sounds like an homage to Roy Orbison... 🤙😎
Always liked this song.
Really enjoyed this super fun song.. and definitely your analysis. Thank you.
He worked with Dave Edmunds during this time (1983). Similar sounding.
Remember Slipping Away (wrote and produced) and Information (produced)?
The Time album, where _Hold On Tight_ is from, is from 1981. 1983 was the year of Secret Messages.
You need to hear the Super Group The Traveling Wilberrys Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty
This Song Was Almost A a throwback to 50s Doo Wap of Extreme Harmonies & Strong Driving Piano Melody 😅
Roy Orbison was the inspiration for this, Jeff was a big fan. And not long after he got to work with Roy.
Beatle inspiration for sure, especially McCartney. Band on the Run
Never even noticed, til now, how much the main parts sound like At The Hop, by Danny & The Juniors
For whatever reason, this became the theme song for a commercial promoting ... coffee.

Rock and Roll is King would be the companion to this one. Check it out next!

I needed to hear this today. Thank you.
I'd watch the hell out of that movie.
If you ever watch the Traveling wilberies handle with care Jeff Lynn is the big frizzy haired guy with the sun glasses in it.
What's to say 😊😊😊 superb ah the memories thanks for reaction😊

'Rockaria' for sure.
In an interview, John Lennon referred to ELO as "sons of Beatles."
Love this group! Lead singer Jeff Lynn is with group called traveling Wilburys! Need to check them out also😊
Maggie has reacted to some WIlburys. They are on YT

Good One Love ELO!
Jeff Lynne has openly admitted to being inspired by The Beatles.
This title comes from the brilliant concept album “Time”.
You listened carefully, Jeff Lynne has worked with all these big stars.
Just saw them in Nashville last month... took my pops... they didn't do this one... the set was amazing, nonetheless.
Great reaction. Hold on tight to your dreams. Always!
Their first song was in 1971. Beatles started in 1965. I loved ELO when they came out. Their sound was unique. Great beat, harmonies, sound. Billy Boy
Beatles first album Please Please Me was released March 1963.
@@malkamusik thanks, i guess my search engine was wrong.

Hmm, nobody seem to care of the texts on the screen, EG the Japanese one...
You've been doing some ELO lately. Good!
Jeff Lynne like to incorporate 50s doo wap in his music. Freddy Mercury from Queen loved opera. Listen to his vocal performances. He'll blow you away
Hold on to your Dreams, the replete"
Wow. Most of the macaronic songs I know are from the Middle Ages. OTOH, there is "Psycho Killer" and probably a bunch of others I just haven't heard.
Three languages, English, French and Birmingham.
I heard that John Lennon called ELO Son of the Beatles
Correct, BeeGees, Beach Boys, Beatles were 60s, ELO were mid 70s to early 80s
PLEASE react to Klaus Nomi! For an Opera singer it would be perfect!
Love ELO. Have you listened to Rush? Check out "The Garden".

HEY maggie go reaction weird genius - Catalyst
OK... May as well go back 50 years and start at the beginning.
I wish it were mandatory to ban videos for your first listen to a song.
They are English but they sing in American. It’s like a trans-Atlantic accent really.
