I'd like to see your reaction to Aretha Franklin stepping in for a sick Pavarotti and singing Nessun Dorma. Supposedly, she even sang it in his key. Your reaction would be very interesting.
When you listen to their body of work, you realize "Orchestra" is an apt part of their name. Jeffy Lynn is a very methodical writer, singer and producer. Their album "Out Of The Blue" is an amazing work.
I’ve loved ELO since they first achieved fame in the 1970s. Leader Jeff Lynne, is a very talented singer/songwriter. And the repetition in this song doesn’t bother me because the sound and the beat are so good. Great reaction, Maggie.

@@Cosmo-Kramer Well, I caught the band a few weeks ago. His voice isn't what it used to be, and he relies heavily on others. Nowhere near the energy of Jagger, who I also saw recently. But still good. The graphics and musicians were tremendous. He is packing it in, at least on the road.
Jeff Lynne was, unbeknownst to them, my kids hero on long road trips. I would pop in ELO greatest hits, followed by the Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 and after a few hours they were joyfully singing every word.
Been a fan of ELO since I heard them do Roll Over Beethoven in 1973 or 1974 when I was 10. As I got older I figured out it was the depth and layering of their songs. Their music is in its own class of progressive rock.
ELO is one of the favorite bands from my youth. Please consider reacting to their song All Over the World. Another great ELO song is I'm Alive. That was in the movie Xanadu.
Concerto for a Rainy Day from their Out of the Blue double album - an ambitious four song suite culminating in Mr. Blue Sky. Referred to as the happiest pop song ever written. It will have you bouncing in your seat. 😂
Jeff Lynne is an amazingly talented writer, producer, singer, performer etc etc. An Englishman of unique talent that should be treasured around the world.
You have to remember that this is actually Jeff Lynne with a swathe of session musicians, the original ELO is long gone with most members either retired or passed away. I suggest you have a look at footage from the time (1976) of the original releases of tracks from Out of the Blue. The Out of the Blue - Live at Wembley (1978) also gives a true representation of how incredibly good the original band really were..
Although seeing Jeff live is incredible (I had the pleasure just once back in 2018, I hope the Over and Out tour will come to Europe and that I can afford a ticket, or it will turn out not to be the last anyway), Jeff can't replicate the original studio versions anymore, even if the horde of talented musicians can make up for the original members. His voice is still wonderful, but obviously not as versatile as it used to be - he just isn't young anymore to say the truth. And there is _nothing_ wrong with that. I saw Brian Wilson performing the 50th anniversary tour of Pet Sounds, and I loved hearing him singing as much as he could, even if his voice has deteriorated a lot more than Jeff's. But to experience the songs in their original splendor, and how they were originally intended to sound, one _has_ to go to the original studio versions. And this also means avoiding the remakes Jeff did some time ago for copyright and royalties reasons probably, although I can understand why making them may have been a good idea, for those reasons. On this song, I think in particular the sped-up section is not nearly as good as the original.
You might like hearing Jeff Lynne's solo version of this song from 2012. He re-recorded many of ELO's hits. The album is called Mr. Blue Sky. Jeff plays bass, drums, keyboards, lead and rhythm guitars as well as singing lead and background vocals. The strings follow his original arrangements. Nothing seems amiss.
Maggie, I think you would really enjoy reacting to another great ELO song titled Shangri La. Has one of the greatest outros you will ever hear. You will really appreciate it being an opera singer.
There are 2 bands from this era that are criminally underappreciated: ELO and Chicago. They both put out music that after listening to it, you just feel uplifted and happy. I just about wore the grooves out of "Out of the blue" on repeat on my turntable in the early 80s.
This is favorite ELO song, and that's saying a lot. Maybe it's the more use of strings that makes me love it so much more than the other songs of theirs.
Ah, my first love, ELO. The original symphonic anything. My only regret is that I won't be able to see their last tour, when they were my first concert!
Jeff Lynne = ELO = Jeff Lynne. After the original "termination" in 1986 following Balance Of Power, some members tried to get a continuation going (which I will not bother naming), and Jeff was not happy about it. This turned the relation between Jeff and certain former members sour. Jeff has always been the core and primary owner of ELO, which was formed by him, Roy Wood (who departed after the first album) and drummer Bev Bevan, as the successor group to the Move. Eventually Bevan transferred his share of the ownership of the name to Jeff, and Jeff is in complete control - which however does not prevent what is now really just a pretentious cover band, although renamed, to continue to leech on the ELO name, being promoted by less reputable venues as if they were "the real thing". This is probably why Jeff renamed it to Jeff Lynne's ELO. With the recent death of Richard Tandy, who remained loyal to Jeff throughout, there aren't many original members alive anyway.
I m pretty sure that on one, or more, of their albums it points out that one guy - Jeff Lynne- wrote all the instruments, all the lyrics, all the grunts, all the groans, everything. Kinda makes you think he has an ego. Sounds great though.
Two songs you will really like by ELO: "Rockaria!" and 'The Diary of Horace Wimp'. The second one is not only great musucslly, but it has a touching story to it.

Jeff Lynne left the Move to form his own outfit, and got red-hot in the later Seventies. ELO wasn't art rock, a la Yes, King Crimson, or Emerson, Lake & Palmer; group was far more pop-oriented. Lynne got George Harrison's career going again, and, along with him, was part of the Traveling Wilburys. He is retiring from touring with the band, but certainly not giving up music.

It's too bad that he gets away with calling this ELO when the only member of the original band onstage is Jeff Lynne. It's gross how he treated the original band. Yes, and is that aria from an opera or written for the song?
The song came out in early 70s and this concert was in 2017 . Also ELO are on their final tour . Still filling the large venues .
Great song and reaction

I enjoyed their vocals and also the string section, and surely I favor listening to more songs played by them. Nice reaction from you too. So long.
Jeff Lynne is great live now, but his major instrument is the recording studio. The studio albums are where he really shines.

Jeff Lynne Comes From Birmingham. England, The City I Was Born In!
