The Last Supper and the Primacy of Peter

  • Next Sunday is Passion Sunday, or more commonly called "Palm Sunday." And in the Mass Readings for Palm Sunday, the Church has us read through the triumphal entry, the Last Supper, and the Passion and death of Jesus.
One interesting aspect of Luke's account is what Jesus says to Peter and the Apostles at the Last Supper. In addition to the famous narrative to Matthew 16 that helps lay the foundation for Jesus' intention to have Peter as the chief of his Apostles, praying especially for Peter to strengthen his brother apostles and so that Peter's faith will not fail as found in Luke's account of the Last Supper is another place we find the Biblical foundation for the primacy of Peter as chief of the Apostles.
    Notable Quote:
"So notice here something really significant about Luke’s account. First, Luke (and Luke alone) tells us that during the Last Supper, Jesus appoints a share in his royal identity as king to the twelve apostles. Literally in the Greek, what Jesus says here, “As my father covenanted the kingdom for me, so I covenant to you, that you may eat and drink at my table, in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” So, effectively what Jesus is doing is constituting (in the figure of the Apostles) a new Israel, where they will rule over this new Israel, sitting on twelve thrones. Secondly, notice also that within these twelve Apostles who are going to reign over the new Israel, Simon Peter has pride of place. And it’s easy to miss that if you read it in English, but in Greek it’s really clear..."

Thanks Dr. Pitre, Many try to belittle the Papacy and mislead fellow catholics to demean Holy Father Francis by their innuendos and calumnies, yet you are firm and proclaim the truth at this troubled times. May God bless you abundantly for your unwavering faith and boldness.

We can like or dislike this pope and not feel comfortable about his ideas, like I do BUT God has allowed this to happen and we are to respect the SEAT of Peter, regardless of who sits in it.
      God has His impenetrable ways.

Jesus was likely referring to a pope's
ex-Cathedra declarations. The pope can err on other occasions.

The interesting thing is that one of Peter's letters is directly addressed to all the scattered among the nations.
Showing himself leading the Church through the scattered seed among the nations.

Note Dr. Pitre is reading from the RSV translation. The printed text on the video is not from the RSV, but I'm not sure what translation it being used for the text in the video. It's a bit unfortunate that they didn't get the text to match. It certainly distracts from the message hearing one translation while being presented in text another. Still, thanks much for the commentary, Dr. Pitre.

How can Mark 10:45 that Christ came to serve and to give his life to redeem many people be connected with the last supper and 1 Corinthians 11:26 that the last supper means that every time you eat the bread and drink from this cup you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes?

The protestants may agree with this explanation. But they say that after Peter and the Apostles passed away, this « authority » dissapeared with them. They say that we can not prove that Peter was in Rome and the Papacy succesion and the catholic were only a « roman » (empereur Constantino) invention. Can you help me to find some biblical quotes or historical facts? Thanks!

Read in Timothy, where Peter writes to Timothy asking him to come to Rome, and come before winter (because boats do not travel in winter), bring me a cloke (because it's cold), and bring me a writing tablet. Several greet you here.........
So, yes, Peter was in Rome. Look up the Catholic Lighthouse CD called Religionless Spirituality, by Dr Tim Gray and he explains this. ......

The word "Primacy of Peter " applies to St Peter himself who leads the Church in the spirit, the Church Faithful (off whom I be a witness) hence "Infalliable",, The Pope or Patriarch sits in the seat, which is Peter's, prone to Error like the present Poniff intending to "Bless Sodomic Unions" using Language Semantics, Lust as Love, contrary to the words Blessing when a "Marriage Blessing" is to be Fruitful & Multiple, after the Protestants unto Protestantization (underscored in Gnosticism 1John 2;19) ,

It is not a "new Israel." You are reading that in. Jesus is clearly talking about the same Israel, but with new leadership. "Spiritual Israel" is in no way Biblically supported. It is bloodline Israel Jesus means.
The real debate should be: who is really bloodline Israel, those who largely accepted Jesus according the Old Testament prophecies -- that is, Europeans, or the modern antichrist religion with a people from the region of Gog and Magog that through a hostile takeover of two world wars have recently come to occupy the Holy Land.

the last supper was NOT a mass, and peter said himself he was just another elder in the church. Jesus is the head of the church, not peter or his false roman catholic descendants, the popes.
