- What is the deeper meaning of the Annunciation, in light of what the Angel Gabriel says to Mary? What allusions to the Old Testament does Gabriel's greeting have, especially as it pertains to David and his Kingdom?

If only every priest, old and new would break open the holy scriptures like this for us, you would have a people who KNOW who they are. This would spell defeat for the enemies of God and the Triumph of The Church.
It's almost as if priests are forbidden to catechize their congregations when giving sermons.

Thanks very much for this scholarly explanation. I was expecting that Dr. Pitre would mention the original Hebrew terms for the specific individual 'Son of God' VS. the collective 'son of God', as concrete bases.
Sadly, he did not.

The old testament was cocealed in the new and the New testament fulfilled rhe old.
As someone raised a Jew, I admit unequivocally that this is very strong Scriptural evidence in favour of Jesus as the expected Messiah and son of God.

There is so much more evidence... read Isaiah, especially chapter 53, and, Daniel. Keep researching and pray over it. Jesus is revealed many times in many ways in the Old Testament. Catholicism is the extension of Judaism.
Catholicism is not a gentile faith. It is Judaism fulfilled and we gentiles have been grafted onto the vine from the root of Jesse as Jesus was a descendant of David. “Then a shoot will grow from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.” - Isaiah 11:1.

It would seem that you cannot really appreciate or understand the new testament without understanding the Davidic Kingdom and the promise God made to David.
My only edit to that line would be to delete the first four words. If you don't know the Old, you'll understand the New less.

Amen! This was also what I had in mind. Whenever I talk to Protestants about Mary, I am inviting them to think like Mary in her pre 70 AD Jewish context and why for her, Gabriel's words were so explicit.

Read the New Testament like the pre 70 AD Jews (kasi they were written before the Temple was destroyed), you end up either a Catholic or an Eastern Orthodox.

Wow! So the actual historical times fits in with the bible? Both the babylonian and the Assyrian empires always seemed disconnected to the story of christ and the Jews in my mind. The British museum is filled with their statuary .

Depends on translation; whether the pronoun is presented as masculine or feminine. Ironically, the King James translation used the feminine.
Mary through Jesus, Jesus through Mary.
They both did, depending on the lens you're looking through. I mean, Mary crushed the Serpent's head my token of her giving the birth to the Incarnate Word. Similarly, Christ did by token of his Divinity and Sacrifice.
So did Christ have every right to call himself God's son and David's son at the same time?
...and Mary's Son, and the Son of Man. Fully human and fully divine. He is the only Person who could explicitly call Himself both the Son of Man and Son of God, and the only Person who could invite us into that same relationship by praying to 'our' Father, who art in heaven...
