I saw a meme last night
pic of Gabe Newl at the Valve office and the text simply said
>does nothing
>Competition just keeps shooting themselves in the foot
"What is this business strategy called?"
because that is what is happening with EGS vs Steam
"Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake" -Napoleon
Epic is screwing up but the video creator is wrong about steam not being a monopoly... they are getting pretty close and when you can lock people in because their purchases are connected to your business you start getting into to bad territory for consumers. Now so far valve hasnt done anything dumb but that usually isn't the case forever. Having a de facto singular service is not a good thing for anybody and I don't know why the creator of the video is trying to trivialize this.
@@thomgizzizsteam isnt preventing other storefronts from existing, they arent even applying anti consumer practices. They only have a really good service. And every other storefront is shooting themselves in the foot by not doing what they can to put their launchers on par with steam in terms of quality and features
@@SkippKatt That isn't totally true about anti-consumer practices it's anti completive practices that they have for developers. If you use steam as developer, you cannot put steam keys for a lower price on any other platform other than steam. They claim it's because they own the keys, but you can't put your software on their site without using their keys. it's a catch 22.
And maake banger games
Epic Game Store is like that one classmate that thinks hes smarter than everyone else because he bought a black market answer sheet to every test in class
And STILL somehow fails the class
What I found really funny is that those "people" only ever shill for EGS. When was the last time they promoted GoG?
GoG is the best, it's the only storefront that gives me a reason to buy something I already have on steam. Because unlike Epic games store it has a unique selling point that benefits the consumer.
GoG doesn't need shilling, it's a competently made product, serving a niche that that the rest of the market doesn't cover, DRM-free, working old games, etc etc.
The Epic Game Store is so crap that i don't even grab the weekly free games.
The thing I find hilarious about the EGS thing is people trying to make it a "steam fan boy thing"
I have literally never heard anyone talk shit about GOG, because they actually market to the PC audience. Their main claim to fame is that all the games on the storefront are DRM free, which is a major selling point to the PC Games consumer base.
Meanwhile EGS is just saying "steam is evil, buy our shit"
That's the funny thing. I've gladly bought games on GOG instead of Steam due to sales and whatnot, but I've yet to touch any of Epic's weekly free games because where GOG is a well-designed platform which I feel like I can trust, Epic Games Store is a mediocre, monopolistic garbage heap run by Tim-fucking-Sweeney.
I'm just reminded of how great GoG is and if EGS wanted to compete, they should try to be less like terrible malware.
also GoG doesn't cry about Steam being a monopoly all the time
GoG works because it fits in a particular niche that Steam just doesn't cover
Old games that won't crash all the time because they're so old
Literally every game that I bought on steam that was pre circa 2006 required some external downloadable patch to actually work correctly
On Gog most older games come with preinstalled compatibility patches for modern systems, I never had issues with anything
"StEaM iS a MoNoPoLy" mfs when they realize the Microsoft storefront exists:
MFS when they don't understand what a de facto monopoly is. Just because something similar exists doesn't mean that you don't have a monopoly. This is what happens when you don't know what you are talking about.
@@thomgizziz MFS when they don't understand that competition actually needs to compete instead of just crying...
Yes, Steam is a monopoly in a sense that it is the most used PC storefront. But why is that? Have you asked yourself this or are you drinking the EGS Kool-Aid?
Alright, let's dive into why PC Gamers like Steam:
- Valve literally saved the PC platform in the later 2000s with Steam. So there's a comfort in that.
- Valve implements features we as PC gamers want. Here's a small list of Steam exclusive features:
1 - Steam Workshop, built-in mod support
2 - Steam VR. Legit any VR game on EGS either uses OpenVR or SteamVR.
3 - Steam Remote Play Together, a "streaming" service where you can host local coop games with your online friends
4 - Steam's Music player, allowing the purchase of game OST
5 - Per-Game and publisher moderated discussion forums. Provided free of charge for publishers
6 - A robust review system that isn't selective
There's probably more, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
- Valve has the best refund system. The automated one is great, 2 hours played or 14 days owned... but if you contact their support, and give a good reason, they'll still give a refund. I had a game I owned for 21 days, with less than 2 hours of playtime, and I got a refund when a game breaking bug made me have to restart the whole game and I wasn't having fun with the game in the first place.
- Valve supports Linux. Yes this is in part due to their own Linux based OS, but Valve is the only one who made great effort into Linux. Epic Games claims they're anti-monopoly yet supports the biggest monopoly... Windows.
There's way more reasons why, but for the most part, Valve and Steam are just good. And you don't pull people away from a good product with a terrible one just because of "exclusives". PC Gamers are just fine with waiting to play a game, or never playing a game at all. So exclusivity doesn't pull a PC gamer away. Tim Sweeny loves consoles, so he thought those tactics would work on PC. Surprise... it doesn't.
@@thomgizziz Let's say Steam was brought down through some kind of miracle. Epic continues their shitty practice. Then another company builds a Steam like product which eats epic's market share.
You know what's that called? Incompetence
Let's say I race you, but my car has 99.4% tank of gas & your car has 0.1% of gas split between 5 tanks.
Who do you think is going to win that race?
Let's apply this to steam. The total exclusive number of games on steam is somewhere around 30,707 games mean while the other 0.6 that you can find that are exclusive of other platforms is broken up from that total of around 38,000. the next highest is Microsoft at 210 games that's less that 0.1% & you're telling them to compete
just like I'm telling you to race me in the car.....
See the problem?
Music to my ears.
The fact that Epic introduced the blight of exclusivity to the PC market is something I will NOT forgive them for, even if at some point it actually becomes a decent feature complete platform.
Poor Chinese spyware launcher. Hate to see it, eh?
I somehow missed all of the news on how poorly EGS is doing, so this video made me so incredibly happy
Epic Games has fanboys? That is wild.
Yeah steam has built an ecosystem and are constantly improving their service. They made a whole steam points rewards system you get when you buy a game that you can customize your profile with. They added play anywhere. They built a VR system that compliments the service. They built a handheld around their steamos that gives you all your games you already own playable on portable. The launcher is always updating, last year we got a whole new refreshed look and optimized backend stuff. They have user reviews, steam workshop, a whole social hub per game. Gaben and Valve clearly put work into their storefront and ecosystem, EGS is the same slow mess its always been that gives me free games once a week. Why would I ever want to build a games library on EGS?
I just got into PC gaming heavily last year (building my PC was a fun/frustrating experience still was fun though when it boot up the first time 👍) *ANYWAYS!* Steam’s store/interface is legit the best I’ve ever seen on a store or app. It’s sooo easy to find things, how your game library is setup is 10/10 it’s a very clean look. They have mad amounts of sales all the time. I’ve found some really good games that were mad cheap, and yeah. It’s a goated app. Gabe/Valve are goats.
It beats Xbox’s store by a loooong shot, PS Store is garbage the most inconvenient store ever.
Shitty EGS is abysmally BAD *LOL* 🤣
Nothing will pass/beat Steam tbh. It’s perfect.
I love seeing Epicgames’ downfall
They arnt falling off because fortnite is doing good but i agree i would love to see their downfall
@@irvinmorales6307 Yeah I know that, seeing their failures is funny.
Why are there fanboys of epic store anyway? Like other than free games which bleeds money for the company btw, what exactly do these people like about epic store? I don't think you should fanboy for any company at all let alone epic store lmao.
They exist because Steam fans are irritants.
A fanboy told me Epic has the best game engine and best multiplayer game which is Fortnite, I then told him how does that make their store good? And they couldn't answer the question and changed the subject.
It also just feels so bland i cannot explain it, I just don’t like being on there. The holiday sale was insane though with the 33% off coupons on top. Only thing to use it for.
I couldn't care less about the epic store. I just think it's annoying when steam fans make up reasons for not liking other launchers.
Like.... The reasons you guys give are real .. but that isn't the reason people get so upset.
People just want all of their stuff in one spot even if that means that companies need to take an unnecessary loss.
If I was making a game and I had the ability to make my own launcher. People would be mad at me if I didn't want to put on steam and lose 30% of my money.
It's a combination of wanting to be part of a group and having very low intelligence.
I wouldn't want to give Ubisoft money either, not only you need to install their launcher to play their games(after you purchased them on steam), their games always have at least 3 layers of DRM on top of each other, including Denuvo.
And they never remove Denuvo.
why is it always a dude that took a picture in a suit they wore 1 time and probably don't wear at any other time lol
Man, I just discovered this channel and became one of my favorites. The man is straight up fighting a crusade against human stupidity
Anyone remember Infinity blade trilogy? I was so salty when they removed it from the app store.
To be fair, Alan Wake 2 is published by Epic. Remedy wouldn't have enough money to make AW2 without Epic. So that one isn't "buying exclusivity". Prince of Persia? Yeah that is just Ubisoft's greed
Outside of GOG in a few aspects, Steam has pretty much everything other game launchers don't. Also just by other launchers existing proves Steam isn't a monopoly.
If theres one thing regarding Steam negativity that makes me lose brain cells is the stupid ass monopoly thing. xD
yes steam is a monopoly. however it is what we call a 'natural monopoly', which is where it is the only seller in the market BECAUSE IT IS THE ONLY GOOD ONE
If it’s not on gamepass or steam, I pirate. Epic is never ever getting a single cent from me
Having Choice and Choosing Steam Makes Steam Not a Monopoly..In a Monopoly There Is No Choice...Gamers Prefer and Choose Steam over EGS
Epic should be remembered for the unreal engine, not fortnite. Unreal (OG) was the first PC and FPS I ever played and to this day I still love it. Fuck epic for removing the game from steam, thank god I already owned it but others can't buy it now.
Edit: If you want to see what has a real monopoly, look at oil companies and ISP's
They should be remembered for Unreal Engine 1-3. 4 and 5 should be forgotten like the dodo.
I love how some naysayers call monopoly on valve steam. While valve have never bought out any competition publicly. Just because it's a popular platform, it doesn't mean they have monopoly over the business. The fact that companies like Ubisoft, Rockstar, GoG, Humble, and even Epic exists along side with steam tells you it's not monopoly.
Have you ever looked at the total exclusive games found on steam only vs those found on all other platforms?
They have literally slip up 0.6% between all of them, so they each have less that 0.1% of any games that it's exclusive to their store's
Steam is funny "yeah use your money on exclusive deals since 90% of players take steam launch as official pc launch we can wait"
F with epic give us kingdom hearts and alan wake already
The reason that Steam is a "monopoly" is because they offer the best value for basically everything. It's the most feature rich and its been around the longest so it has the biggest userbase. It's not hard to understand.
So... not a monopoly. Its just the most well made storefront.
I'll be honest... I don't HATE the EGS... It's the only reason why a lot of console fanboys I knew have even touched PC gaming. It isn't piracy either, so at least there's that too. They made efforts to make games cross platform and I respect that too.
What they willingly do to the Linux platform and by extension (Easy Anitcheat), Steam Deck, and moneyhatting exclusives is what annoys me the most. Most of their userbase is freeloaders, that's okay, but expecting some of those freeloaders to take advantage of steep coupon deals or buy exclusive games is so farfetched... So by having exclusives or buying up all the aggressive MTX games, they're really not doing anything but showing people how disgustingly predatory the Free to Play format is. Since that's what's making them enough money to operate an entire storefront and bleed money endlessly.
its funny to see people blame players for not buying games that are exclusive on epic store and call that anti consumer practices done by steam and not the actual store thats taking games and making them exclusives
Yep - Those guy's are completely bonkers if they think there is any logic in that...😵💫
Still seeing some of this discussion months later and it's crazy. A company is anti consumer because...someone doesn't want to use a specific one of their competitors?
I chose to buy a game on ps4 instead of the steam version mainly because of DRM and accessibility for me (ps4 is easier for me to use than pc at the time I bought it). Does that mean Sony is now The gaming monopoly and killing Steam and Valve? Why is it any different for any other game company? The fact I was able to comfortably make that choice and still have the choice to buy it again on Steam should I choose to... And while I don't recall if that specific game was also released on EGS, if a game as released on all 3 of those platforms I could still just as easily buy all 3 versions if I wanted to. How is having that choice a bad thing just because someone dislikes that one of those is more respected by more people?
And yet pc gamepass exists. I’ve never heard of a PC gamepass sub complain about Steam being a monopoly. Epic stans are a rare breed.
If anything epic games having been doing monopolistic attempts to make there store “good” and it hasn’t worked
It's a nightmare store, and I hope Sweeney loses at least SOME money. I'm 61, and I played Jazz Jackrabbit when it was first coming out and Epic Megagames used to be NEAT
Yep! I’m 39 and pretty much grew up with their games, from ZZT and beyond. It sucks to see what they’ve become.
I just hope they don’t give their older titles the same treatment they gave to the Unreal franchise. That was absolutely shameful.
Fortnite was a mistake
Steam was a Trojan Horse. You will own nothing and like it. Epic store and Steam is the same thing. Steam is a prison woth a pretty bow.
I've got games, free games, that epic gave away. Funny thing is, I purchase them on Steam anyway when I want to play them. Steam is so much better I'd rather PAY for a game I already own on Epic to play it. Let that sink in.
I did the same. Epic gave me civ 6 and i still went and gotten on steam because it was better for me
@@err0rheart932 That community workshop with the one click mods is literally the coolest thing of all time. God Steam is so good.
For short a monopoly in this market is if they held devs against their will to only put games on their platform, that word is overused to a point I dont think alot of people dont understand what it means
Only reason I use EGS is for the free games....but even with that it's still rare.
Also I have never heard of a Flash ver of Unreal but I'm really sad I missed out on it.
And EVEN THEN I don't use their trash launcher. I use a command line prompt
@@slamshift6927what makes it trash? It plays games, I'm really trying to understand the issue.
The Epic Stans Must Be Getting Paid
Finally dead island 2 coming in 2 months and 2 days to steam this game is great i hate that this game is exclusive to epic games once steam gets their hand on dead island 2 epic games will start losing money steam is one of the first platforms i've ever played and never had issues with them in fact they are better than any company like google, playstation, and certainly microsoft the reason is their account recovery support is literally the best not google or sony none of them have helped me recover my account in their platform except for steam they literally have recovered my account in 2-3 days (without being a steampunk or steam fanboy) they are great and probably one of the best companies if not the best company that is in for users and gamers in general i never have been disappointed with them once since i started using and playing on their platform ofc there are some tiny issues but they are so minor compared to other companies and i believe thats why steam is one of the most beloved companies on the pc market their platform is great and even if their games are expensive wait a few months i believe and they'll reduce the price patience is needed.
I don't get why is there fanboys for EGS and steam is not a monopoly but EGS fanboys are on full damage control 😅
Dude, I'm with you....If My options to get a game on EGS, PS5 or XBOX....I'd get it on either console over EGS.
just checked, it says i have 240 games on EGS, didn't pay for 1, and might've tried out 4 or 5
mind boggling that it still doesn't have a screenshot function, it's been 5 years.
I think it's safe to say that the Epic Games Store is a SCAM.
Can you please explain why EGS is a scam?
10:50 True pain.
I'm just never buying a game from there if I'm not forced to. They ruin everything they touch that isn't fortnite
I am more on the, if you have been "epic" exclusive I will not buy your game, on any platform.
So, I bought Alan Wake 2 over the holidays. EGS gave a 20% discount on top of the discounted rate and I had Epic Reward money, so it was much discounted.
Not counting Fortnite, because I do like playing it (especially with Fortnite Festival), I spent a grand total of... 30$ on the EGS last year. Steam? Lots. Not counting the Steam Deck I purchased, lots...
EGS is not good competition. Yes, Steam needs competition, like all things do... But if you half-ass everything, nobody will want to use your thing.
I had like 50 games I got for free on the Epic store. One day I simply uninstalled it and never looked back. I bought the couple of games I had there again on Steam.
I don't care if Steam is a monopoly if it's just so good for the users.
If Fortnite didn't exist Epic G's store wouldn't even be alive in 2024.
I bought and played through Alan Wake II and it was my favorite game of that year… but I was so disappointed that it wasn’t on steam, my whole library is on steam and separating that library with different logins, pricing, and social systems is really frustrating
Oh boo hoo Tim Sweeny let me play a sad song on the world's smallest violin 🎻
Epic game store needs to focus on their software in the store and fix a lot of stuff that they need to be fix unlike steam it's already fixed and everything else is great 👍 steam is literally the only platform I can trust to buy games and on top of that I can download those games at any given time
The only reason I have EGS installed is because of the free games they throw out every now and then, got things like all of the Tomb Raider games, Duskers, etc. but my usual go to is Steam
It's always funny to me how people who defend EGS or are indifferent like to bring up "Steam was hated in it's early days, but it got better". Well it's been 5 years now and EGS hasn't gotten better, if anything it's gotten worse and people using it haven't gotten any wiser either.
This isn't a 1:1 scenario where EGS will follow Valve's exact route and EGS will magically become widely accepted like Steam has been, mainly because EGS is doing the complete opposite of what Steam has been doing for years, and they refuse to adjust course and just emulate Steam/Valve completely, because that is the only way they will ever be accepted (anything less is just pure ignorance/arrogance).
I really do wish the EGS fanboys would wake up and stop buying whatever drivel Timmy/Fartnite peddles to them.
It's because at the end of the day Gabe/valve doesn't have to go to his shareholders/tencent and come up with new ideas to make more money from fucking over their customers.
I actually forgot about witch fire, thanks for the reminder.
Tbh all of em are bs as long as they have always online drm you own nothing unless you sail the 7 seas and I do buy my games but what’s the point when you have problems that pirates dont
The moment that Metro Exodus received the console 3rd party exclusive bullshit and was pulled from steam I gave the middle finger to EGS and continue to this day. Let it burn
OH MY GOD UNREAL FLASH WAS THE SHIT!!!
I'M SO HAPPY SOME ONE ELSE KNOWS ABOUT IT!
I remember this game waiting for games to come to steam!
I cant believe people are defending that joke of a storefront
HOLY SHIT THAT'S ME AT THE END
Never thought I'd make it in a video tbh
Epic Games should stick to Fortnite and the Unreal Engine. That's all they have going for them now. Mind you, the Unreal Engine makes quite a bit of money.
I came over to PC because I refuse to buy game consoles that look like home appliances(Xbox Series X/Minifridge, PS5/Network Router). I still have my PS4 and Xbox One, and I play those regularly.
Steam and GOG are the only good launchers I know
This is coming from a complete Fortnite shill (I guess you can call me part of the problem), I hate the Epic Games Store, I think I bought one game on it that was exclusive (Solar Ash) and it came to Steam like 2 months later and I hadn't even played it yet, so I bought it on Steam, I would kill to have Fortnite on Steam so I didn't have to use another launcher, I literally refused to download shit like Overwatch or Call Of Duty until it came to Steam, I hate the idea of having other worse launchers on my PC when I could just have all my games in one place, as much as I love Fortnite I absolutely despise having to use the Epic store, it constantly signs me out for no reason, and its just slow and clunky in general, not to mention how they hold games hostage on there, like I want to play Kingdom Hearts on Steam but its been stuck in Epic Games prison for years and they just won't budge on letting the damn games go, also how when Epic bought up Fall Guys and Rocket League they just straight up removed them from Steam, like the higher ups at this company just seems hellbent on making the most braindead decisions possible for no real tangible reason
Joe, when you remember your closing gag, are you going to include it on this video's next update patch? I feel like the video is unfinished and I want a refund 😤
Yo shout out for mentioning unreal flash!
I want to play Palword on my own dedicated server in my basement but I can't because the Epic Online Services will never login through the Palworld launcher. F*ck EGS.
You should like the other video you referenced, I'm genuinely interested in hearing that one. Yeah, i could go to your channel and find it, but a link would be nice. Good video, keep it up!
Bruh, the fact that the Xbox App, The F-ing Xbox App as more UI & App Functionallity than Epic Games Store is Beyond me. say what you want about Microsoft, but at least they launch the vast majority of their games on Steam Day & Date.
Steam > bnet > gog > uplay > fucking gta launcher > epic (atleast works sometime) >>>>> ea launcher
To this day i still regret not getting rocket league on Steam and having to boot up the EGS launcher is still a nightnmare
I do buy the occasional gamme on Epic but last year I only bought Alan Wake 2 on there because I can wait for the games to come to steam so I can just use the steam interface only on the Steam Deck.
Last time i checked, i have almost 100 games on EGS and i never paid a single dime lol
UNREAL FLASH WAS MY FAVORITE GAME TO PLAY AGAINST FRIENDS IN! DOOOOD, WE ARE OOOOOOLD!!!!!!!
Rocket league if most brutal victim of epic store like 99% of rl pc's trading community is in steam and you cant get it from steam anymore 😅
I only have the epic store anymore for the freebies, I have bought satisfactory and borderlands 3 in the past before I realized they would come to steam eventually, did the repurchase somewhat recently, did an uninstall and a reinstall and legit the games even run better......
Also fortnite is the same as pokemon, just a daycare for children, and I apologize to anyone that is a reasonable human being that enjoys those games
The main reason why i pretty much use only steam is cause its the single best functioning client. Like to get me wrong steam is still buggy as all hell, but at the same time the most fletched out library manager out there...
I'm all for indie peeps getting their bag of Fortnite money they get up front, but yeah, everything else about EGS for the user is just not appealing compared to Steam.
Steam may be a "monopoly", but Valve isn't doing a bad job with it, nor are they abusing their customers. Quite the opposite in fact. Epic shills stay malding.
I’ve had epic for 3ish years and I have 50+ games and ALL of them were free and I only bought a civ 6 dlc that was £10
Im sure console fanboys and epic supporters have same dna in them
Why would you play on PC when you can have the life changing experience of playing a PS5 with its magical SSD? All games play at 420fps and in 69k thanks to the holy magic within it. 😂
I'm still gutted Kingdom Hearts is on EGS and not steam
was that plazma burst 2?
I am not going into the store on the otherside of town in the bad part of the city that smells like drugs and everytime i walk into the store i step in vomit or shit just to buy a product only this store sells i can go without the product
Oh that's why you get so many games free, because you need to buy them again anyway if you decide to buy the bundle with all the DLC.
Ive never bought a thing off epic, but i do take the free games they pass out
Literally, I only used the egs for ue5. I never bought a game there.
Tbf on the bundle pricing alot of games on steam dont even do that it wont lower the price
You may need to click on the bundle, then it shows whats the final offer will be
@@nahuelleandroarroyo Yep - When they have a bundle sales, they always give the games on sale minus the games you already own. It's a cheap way to complete your game collection. Example - I already owned God Eater 3, and Steam offered the complete God Eater series for cheap in a bundle. So I clicked on the bundle, and sure enough I got the other games for cheap and did not had to pay again for God Eater 3. The same goes on the GOG platform (that's my to-go platform these days).
@@nahuelleandroarroyo not always plenty dont give a discount
Is prince of persia on the epic store? I thought it was only on ubisofts store
Yes that game is also on the Epic store.
I only use the Epic Game Launcher for the free games on it and I have to say the hate for the launcher is deserved. They need to overhaul it if they want people to willingly use it over Steam.
Part of the reason Alan wake 2 isn’t profitable might be because it sucks just saying
I'm a bit mad to steam because they removed spec ops the line though
That wasn't nice
To be fair, Epic helped everyone dodge a bullet with Alan Wake 2.
This isn’t me defending Epic BTW, this is me saying that AW2 shouldn’t have been made.
I was excited to see another player in the PC game sales market when EGS launched, but the store sucks, and their strategy of trying to bring the 'console exclusive' element over to the PC game marketplace is just a bunch of bullshit. So, like everybody else I take the Epic free games, but I never spend any money there.
Nah - I don't even want their stuff for free if I have to visit their hellhole. GOG gives me plenty of free stuff every now and then, and is a pleasant place to buy DRM-Free games. I now have even more games on GOG than I gathered on Steam over the years since I signed up to play Half-Life 2. Oh - And the amount of games I bought on Epic Store? Zero...
@@jclosed2516 Sure that's a reasonable position. On EGS I have a library of 272 games I got for free. I don't have any of them installed, but I expect that when I got the game, Epic still had to hand over some of that Fortnite cash to the people who made it. I consider it a way to re-distribute the wealth to smaller developers.
Hear you on Witchfire ... I saw that game, thought it looked incredible ... saw it was Epic store only... interest died right there..
When it comes to steam, i might pick it up.
I felt dirty when I had to download EGS to play Alan Wake 2. It will be the only game I own on that platform.
9:28 Nice parry
