Things to know. I have two Nero 5’s, which uses the same app. I like them a lot but there are a few things to know that might be a deal breaker if you auto feed or need to stop flow completely to target feed your corals. 1st, You can’t program feed mode into your daily 24hr period, it has to be done directly from the app or from the controller. 2nd, Feed mode is not really a feed mode, it only reduces the flow to about 33% of maximum flow. For the Nero 5 that’s still 954gph. The only ways to turn them off completely is in the dashboard of the app and hit “Pumps Off”, or unplug them and remember to turn them back on. On the good side, they push water awesome, they are very controllable and a breeze to clean. Edit: I see they have added(or was always there?)the ability to program feed mode(not completely off). It was hidden and needs to be scrolled up. That’s great! Please let us turn it completely off.
I bought 2 of them at launch and they are a great pump but not quite enough for a full 93g cube mixed reef. I also tried them in my 3ft peninsula and a no go there as well. In a biocube or something of that size it’ll be perfect!!!
A nice sleek yet powerful pump. I like how small the foot print is. Going to have to order a couple of them for my 40g breeder tank. Great review Jake.. 👍
I was waiting for a smaller version of the Nero 5. To I have 2 on my 120 reef and are Great set up a nano tank I think Nero 3 wel be the perfect fit I am running all AI light
I bought one a few days ago for my 25 lagoon. Good to hear about the cord. I have a jaebo slw10 very similar design that has a fat cord that wont stay at the angle i want the powerhead at. I think the skinny cord will help keep it in place.
Excellent job Jake 👍🏻I see you have some great reference on your book shelf!! Sprung and Delbeek! 😃I wish some of the newer reefers would visit these books. Great video!
great video! I had a quick question. I have a 20 cube waterbox tank and I upgraded my return pump with a sicce 1.0 and I also have a korolia 425 on the tank. Would you recommend me adding a AI Nero 3 wave pump to the tank aswell? Or should I take out the korolia pump? I just want to make sure there is not too much flow! I currently have softies and lps. livestock- 2 clownfish, royal gramma, hermits, and snails. thanks
Great vid Jake loving the bookshelf too , I too have the Veron Coral books, Julian Sprungs The Reef Aquarium and the Nilsen and Fossa Modern coral reef aquarium series. Great books for inspiration just before we had full interwebs
I loved my Nero 5 so much i bought another and now that they have come out with this smaller one I will definitely be getting one for my waterbox 20 cube reef.
Cheers Jake, any news on a larger version of the pump? Obviously Nero 5, anything else in the pipeline?? Really hate seeing pumps and wires or equipment in my aquariums, the Nero certainly seems to hide well.
Must say! Awesome review, did one over the weekend just havnt had time to edit and post! Must admit you NAILED IT! totally a rockin pump for 2020 price is right and the flow/percormance unbeatable
Good video, seems to be a great little pump! I just got it yesterday but haven"t run it yet. Any recommendations on placement in a 20g IM Peninsula? I was thinking on overflow wall
Great Review Jake🙏. I am hoping next year to get a Waterbox Reef 130.4, for bigger tanks like that do you think 5-6 Nero 3 ‘s on the back wall would work? I’m thinking good for redundancy, cleaning schedules different flow options in the tank... or would you recommend bigger pumps like wave makers or MP60s
Incredible little powerhead! Thanks for the thorough review! This really showcased the versatility and utility of this powerhead, I can't believe the price for all you get!
Great review. Did you have to do anything special to get the cord to stay in the corner? Seriously debating between this and a MP10. The only thing holding me up is the cord. Thanks.
Do you know if the dry side of the magnet can go into water? The tank I would Put it on would make me place the dry magnet in water to hold the Nero in place
Hey jake, wondering if you could make a fragging video for corals that are grown into rocks like some in that lps. Curious to see how you’d go about it.
I have a 36 gallon bowfront currently but upgrading to a 120 soon. My 2 jaebos died after 3 months! What size would you recommend that i can use both now and when I upgrade? Could I get way with just one of the bigger ones for now and be able to get enough flow for the whole tank. I had my jaebos on the sides and kind of directly blasting because I bought the small nano ones. I would like to get a gyre type flow, I think thats what you call it when it put up high and hits the wall and comes back around. I was looking into the mp40's because of the battery back up mainly. do you think its worth the xtra or could I get a battery cheaper? Also do I need the phone to just shut off for feed mode? I tend to lose my phone a lot and just prefer remotes versus phone apps! I am not savvy at all with high tech gadgets! LOL
would this work for my 32 gallon planted freshwater tank? its 30inch wide, bowed front 17 inches at the center point. or would i have to go with the bigger one?
How large is the magnet on the back? I’m trying to find a pump I can use in the back of my AIO but been having issues finding ones that have small enough (flat) magnet that could go into one of the chambers
The only reason why I'm torn between this and an mp10 is because of of the mp's ease of cleaning (swapping wet side). I guess buying two of these for swapping comes out to the same price of one mp10....any suggestions?
Is the outside magnet water proof. Was thinking of adding to my overflow, and have it hit some problem areas in back. But wasnt sure if magent would hold up under water.
Reached out to Ai and this is the reply, " The outside magnet on all Nero models was not designed to be submerged in the aquarium. That said, we have had several users report they are using the outside magnet submerged in the aquarium without issue. Obviously, we are unable to guarantee this will work long term without issue but it is unlikely that you would experience any problems. "
@@philipjonsson7133 I did. Awesome pump, i have another smaller hydro wavemaker in there as well but it’s just there to make my hammers flow nicer. I could easily run the tank with just the Nero.
Jake, great review, since they have absolutely the same interface with mobius (vortech), any chance for synced controability from one app? (E.g. feed mode etc.)
The long cord is actually a negative for me. I have my power strip set up next to my tank and it's wayyy to much slack, just make cable management that much more difficult

Hi, I have a 100g , 26 inch deep mixed reef tank with Vectra m2 return, Tunze 6025 low down to one side and two jebao RW-8 near the top at opposite ends. One of the Jebao has failed so looking at getting a pair of AI Nero's and dropping the remaining RW-8 down to opposite the Tunze. I run the Rw-8's and less than 1/2 power and they're supposed to be 8000l/h. Are the AI Nero 3's strong enough?
I love my Nero 3, it’s perfect for my 20 drop off. Smaller in this instance is much better, especially how I don’t fear my fish being shredded. The only thing I dislike is not being able to add it to a pre existing “tank” within the app.
How many of the AI Nero 3 pumps would you recommend on a IM Nuvo Fusion 20 (not Peninsula) tank with spin stream nozzles? Mostly LPS, but want to try SPS. Thanks!
It comes with a very fine intake guard, but no matter the pump, if the anemone wraps around it the pump will still suck it in. The best option is to both have a very fine intake/filter and have the pump far away from the aquascape.
@@ReefBuildersVideo So the anemones won't go on glass at all? They just stick on the rockcape? I've seen a lot of tanks with no safe guard, must be because they won't climb up that far? I've got a fluvial 13.5 so I'll most likely have to cover it
Hi guys, love te video. I have a 20g cube, but I am worried the nero 3 wil have to high of a minimum setting,(nero 5 runs at 37% of the max 3000g at 1% setting) for my LPS tank. The feed mode is very slow. I have both pumps in a 57 gallon and feed mode is calm enough to spot feed. Its a great pump.
added to my 90 gal in the top front left side . stirred up enough water to make the skimmer produce more. great pump

Jake have you noticed the weak magnets on 1/2” glass? I wonder if AI is gonna address this issue.? I like these pumps.
As always thanks for your effort Jake!
Jake. If the power goes out, does the pump retain the programming or do you start at square one?

Can you do a video or a blog on all the books you have? Been looking to build my library
