Once in a plane to romania a very old man sat next to me. after while i realized it was georghe zamfir, the great romanian pan flute solist of this soundtrack, probably the best pan flute player ever. i was touched to sit next to him later - waiting for the lugagge i dared to talk to him. he was very nice and i told him, that my wife and i are big fans on ennio and by the look onhis face it was obvious, that this soundtrack must have been also the highlight in his career. he smiled so beautiful when he heard morricones name. i was touched to meet him , because i this music just is a part of my life .
Close your eyes and look back !! There is surely one moment of your life where this wonderful music has a place !!!!!!!!!! It thrills me........................
This song reaches deep into my soul and ignites a nostolgia of my past. My mistakes and triumps. My mistakes with my children and also the good times. My lost loves and all the what ifs. Some that after 40+ years I still miss. I thought I was trying my best but in retrospect,I could have done better. It makes me want to go back in time and correct my mistakes and savor the fond moments of my life. I feel a tear running down my cheek and a smile also forms on my face. Grazie,Don Ennio. X

I have admired the work of Ennio Morricone since I first heard the score for 'The Good the Bad and the Ugly.' I think that his score for 'Once Upon a Time in America' is his greatest work. In 'Deborah's Theme' he evoked depths of loss and heartbreaking nostalgia which had never been so well expressed in music before. This is the theme of every man looking back upon his life and wishing he had done better and been better for the people he cared about. It makes me think of the first girl I ever loved and how I could never fully express my love to her or be what she wanted. It also makes me think of America and American history, of how common the story of disappointed ambition and empty success is in this country. It makes me have compassion for Noodles and for Deborah, two people who have much in common with me and with all of us. Many thanks, Ennio, you said in music what I could never express in words. RIP.
Once Upon A Time was his major breakthrough, just before The Mission. Both scores should have received an Academy Award. They received a BAFTA award instead. At least the British had good taste. Morricone's best score in my opinion is also the one that was rarely, if ever performed during a live concert: Lolita.
One of the best movies of all time, and such a sad, evocative song. The tragedy of human existence. The inevitability of failure, in spite of the American dream of optimism and success.
This reminds me when I had many friends used to gather in one restaurant in nearly city back in times in late 80s. They all went away and I remain visit this restaurant whenever I go there, but physically and mentally alone :( Strange how life turns back to your dreams :(
This kind of movies and musics are the ones who made us ( italians) proud of our Nation, please always remind about Sergio Leone and Morricone when you have to think about modern italian art.

This music is so emotional to me. We played this track and another track from the movie on the funeral of my dad. He past away 20 years ago. It was his favorit movie and music. I still play this track several times every year. It is awsome.
I watched once upon a time in America with my mum a few years back & she loved the soundtrack & now it breaks my heart as she passed away & her sister my aunty & 12 of my closest friends all gone in the last few months so when I hear this beautiful music I breakdown as I feel so lonely & empty inside & I feel like a shadowman who is just existing now.
