I've seen so many versions of Telegraph Road but this is the one that really hit it home for me. The whole emotional and melodic build up leading to the explosion at the end was just mind blowing. He made that Fender talk, whisper, shout, scream and wail. What a song...

This man is able to sound the guitar in such an absolutely great way that he transports you to a musical dimension beyond this world. Listen to MK never leaves anyone indifferent.
This is an awesome song. The lyrics are quite poignant as they relate to the passing of time, the musical score is fantastic. I hope someday to have the privilege of seeing him in concert.
Since I was 14 that is the guitar solo I’ve wanted to play. 40 years go by quickly. That is a maestro playing his masterpiece. I was lucky to be at these Albert Hall concerts too. Unforgettable.
Great song Mark, you are one of my top Artists, & are on my bucket list to see! Yes we are both getting up in years so I would love for it to happen sooner than later, before you retire or I die! Ha!!!!! Love your work, keep on ROCKIN my friend!!!!!
I have been blessed to see Dire Straits three times twice in 1986 and once in the early nineties I can honestly say without a shadow of a doubt that it was a religious experience those Brothers in Arms concert I’ve never felt the same since and I’ve seen so many over seas artists his brilliance makes me emotional I love Mark Knopfler a musical genius! ❤️🙌❤️
I’ve been lucky enough to see Mark on two occasions and both time I left in awe. On this version the piano player and the organ player were just incredible. What a performance
Adel Houdrouge : Thanks a lot for all you've done for us Mark Knopfler. Respect. .You are a great musician, a great song writer, a great guitarist. You are a genuis, a reference in rock'n roll music.
Any time I've seen him play this with another guitar it just doesn't seem the same, as with a les paul, nothing sounds like a strat, and no one sounds like Mark with a strat, elegance and class, there's something very " out worldly" about this man, his expression of passion and technique touches you on a soul level, he's the musical explanation of what draws every guitarist to the instrument, much love respect and thanks to have such inspiration to remind you of the power and magic of music and a guitar ✌🏼️
The original is still the best. I've just bout Love Over Gold on MOFI double LP pressing and can't wait to hear it as it's my favourite Dire Straits album. As years have gone on his playing is far more dark and distorted, the clean Strat tone is now pretty rare which is a pity, like you said "no one sounds like Mark with a strat"!!! True. He's using Komet amps now and they're rich and dark like a Marshall or a Mesa.
I play guitar, have done since a kid. Mark is just one of these people who just own the instrument. I can listen to 3 notes on the radio and my ears know it's him. And it's the same strings with the same fingers :) He kind of hybrid picks as I do but still :)
Once upon a time in the west, on every street, speedway at nazareth, money for nohing...etc...
Such geniussses do not stand up in every generation. We might never in our lifetime encounter a second, writer, composer, lived-tru singer, bandleader and guitarcraftsman like m. knopfker.
Danny Cummings yes. I heard him on This is Us song and had to know who he was !.He plays the simplest beat with complex power.... I don't what it is but its magic.Maybe it's that he drives the SONG. and not the beat. They are not the same thing.
What’s even more amazing is that he’s 62 or 63 when this was performed, an age when arthritis and creakyness in your joints sets in (I know because he and I are the same age). Yet he’s lost none of his dexterity on the fret and it sounds as good as when he was in his 20s/30s. Just a treasure to the world.
Anyone who has tried to learn the original 1982 version will testify it is a challenge. MK rarely, if ever, plays the studio version live. Instead he embellishes the texture of the studio version by weaving sympathetic runs and riffs into the frame of the original. He can produce a dozen different variations because he has in his playing arsenal a unique knowledge of how the phrases of the original can be unlocked and put back together in a different, but immediately recognisable form. I think just playing the original time after time would bore him.
It’s how songs should be played imo. It’s more fun to play and it’s a challenge. Also people can learn from each other if new ideas are being created all the time.
For your entertainment and pleasure - the drummer (whose name I forget) has played on the Dido live set at Brixton Academy and also with Tina Turner at Wembley and Eric Clapton - legendary session musician
mark knopfler could play a 80 minute guitar solo and somehow... there are no unnecessary notes... every single note is precisely where it needs to be...

If I want to listen to this song ever, this is where I come, not to any of the concert footage version. Whatever it is about the positioning here, it just gets the power of the song in all the right places. The base reverberates as you'd feel it in a real concert and you can hear Edge's guitar so clearly. And that ending that rises and rises and rises to the crescendo. Yep, for me the most raw, beautiful version of the song live.
